Evaluation of recombinant porcine somatotropin on growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and muscle biochemical properties of Belgian Landrace pigs.

The dose related effects of recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpST) on growth, carcass characteristics, muscle properties, and meat quality were investigated in lean Belgian Landrace finishing pigs. Ninety-six pigs (48 barrows and 48 gilts) were injected daily with either vehicle, 1.5, 3, or 6 mg of rpST from 60 to 97.5 kg live weight. Each treatment group consisted of six pens of four pigs each (two of each sex). Pigs were given ad libitum access to a high-protein (20.4% CP) cereal-based diet. Administration of rpST increased (P less than .05) growth rate (16.3 to 25.4%) and improved (P less than .05) feed efficiency (16.9 to 29.4%). Feed consumption was reduced (12%; P less than .05) only in the 6 mg of rpST group. Liver, kidney, and heart weights were increased (P less than .05) in the 3 and 6 mg of rpST groups. Although the Belgian Landrace pigs are bred for superior carcass quality, rpST further improved (P less than .05) carcass composition at all dose levels as evidenced by a reduction (10 to 50%) in a number of subcutaneous fat depth measurements, an increase (10 to 20%) in longissimus muscle area, and an improvement in the lean cut:fat cut ratio. Rate of pH decline in the gluteus and longissimus muscles was similar, but rapid, in all groups (pH after 30 min = 5.74 to 5.94); the ultimate (24 or 72 h) pH was .15 to .2 pH units higher (P less than .05) in the pigs that received the 3 and 6 mg of rpST doses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Time clustering and temporospatial regrouping study of cases of juvenile diabetes in the district of Rhône (1960-1980)].

In order to study the relevance of the influence of environmental factors in Insulin-dependent Diabetes, we dressed a statistical analysis of season-related diabetes (Roger's test and Wallenstein's test). At the same time, we made a statistical analysis of space-time clusters of IDDM patients (Knox method and Mantel method). We noted an illness increase between August and February, although not significantly. The Wallenstein test clearly shows the existence of several significant season-related symptoms. As for the space-time clustering tests, and taking into account the relatively short duration of these environmental factors none in fact allows to assert the existence of such influences.

Mortality of a cohort in a polyamide-polyester factory in Lyon: a further follow up.

In 1981-2 a retrospective study was undertaken in a polyamide-polyester factory in Lyon, France, to evaluate the effect of exposure to phthalates, nickel catalysers, and other chemicals in the work environment. The present paper reports the results of the follow up of this cohort up to July 1986. A slightly increased risk of cancers, in particular of the lung (44 cases), marginally related to exposure category but not significantly related to duration of exposure was found. The excess of skin cancers noted previously has disappeared, whereas an excess of cases of bladder cancer (based on seven cases) may be noted, mainly among nylon workers. The cohort is still young, however, and a continued follow up is likely to yield important information about the potential hazards associated with the nylon and tergal polymer industry.

Effect of pituitary somatotropin injections on plasma insulin-like growth factor I and somatotropin profiles in growing heifers.

Effects of daily injections of pituitary-derived bovine somatotropin (bST) for 6 wk were evaluated in 10 growing heifers and compared to 9 placebo-treated control animals. Bovine somatotropin was injected at 50 micrograms/kg BW each day. Body weight and growth, plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and somatotropin (ST) were assessed. To measure plasma concentrations of IGF-I, we validated a RIA in which bovine plasma samples were extracted with acid-ethanol, a method that resulted in greater than 90% recovery of IGF-I. Average daily gain was similar during the first 4 wk of the experiment in both control and bST-treated groups; however, at the end of the experimental period (wk 4 and 6) ADG was greater (P less than .05) in bST-treated heifers (1.24 +/- .21 kg/d vs .75 +/- .25 kg/d). Plasma IGF-I from wk 2 to wk 6 were increased in bST-treated animals (452 +/- 97 ng/ml at wk 2; 683 +/- 106 ng/ml at wk 6) compared with controls (293 +/- 62 ng/ml at wk 2 (P less than .01) and 293 +/- 115 ng/ml at wk 6 (P less than .001). Moreover, ADG over the 6-wk experimental period was correlated with mean IGF-I concentrations determined over the same period (r = .55; P less than .01). As expected, mean plasma ST concentrations were increased in bST-injected animals from wk 1 to 6. Gel chromatographic profiles of bovine plasma exhibit a 150,000 molecular weight ST-dependent binding protein-IGF-I complex and a 30,000 molecular weight non-ST-dependent complex. This study validates a method for measuring IGF-I in cattle, and shows a positive relationship among IGF-I and ADG after ST treatment. No correlation, however, was found between plasma ST and growth performance.

[Juvenile insulin-dependent diabetes in Wuhan Province, People's Republic of China. Incidence rate from 1971 to 1985].

The average incidence rate of juvenile diabetes in Wuhan (People's Republic of China) between 1971 and 1985 was 0.6/10(5) in children less than 14 years of age. This incidence rate is close to that observed in Japan but seven times lower than the French rate and much lower than the incidence rate in other occidental countries. This is the second study to show a lower incidence rate of juvenile diabetes among Asian populations as opposed to occidental populations. However, interpretation of the results must be cautious with regard to the method of data collection.

[Effect of growth hormone on meat production in heifers].

Short-term treatment of bovines with growth hormone (GH) has shown that GH increases nitrogen balance. In the present experiment we studied the effects of exogenous GH on weight gain, feed efficiency, carcass grade and meat quality. Twenty heifers of the Belgian White Blue breed were used. After an 8-week pre-experimental period, during which we recorded individual growth rates, the animals were allotted to two groups for 18 weeks; one group (T) received daily 50 micrograms of pituitary GH per kg of liveweight, whereas the other group (C) was given a placebo. Long-term treatment with GH induced weight gain (C: 117.1 +/- 25.5 kg; T: 144.6 +/- 23.7 kg; 23.5% increase, P less than 0.05) and increased feed efficiency (C: 10.34 +/- 2.04 kg DM/kg weight gain; T: 8.24 +/- 1.03 kg DM/kg weight gain). Digestibility of diet dry matter was identical in both groups (C: 60.1 +/- 2.7%; T: 59.8 +/- 2.4%). There were no difference in the classification of group C and T carcasses according to the EUROP pattern and after monocostal segment dissection (7th rib). Furthermore, the meat analysis of the two groups was identical with respect to protein, fat and collagen content. This was also true for tenderness, pH and juice loss after cooking. We concluded that stimulation of bovine weight gain by GH was significant and efficient while meat quality and carcass grade were not improved.

Mortality experience in a polyamide-polyester factory.

Chemical workers have become increasingly concerned about the presence of carcinogens in their occupational environment. As a result, a number of studies of excess cancer mortality have been undertaken in groups of workers with well-characterized exposures. This paper reports the results of one such study carried out in a polyamide-polyester factory in France. A retrospective cohort design was chosen to evaluate the effect of exposure to phthalates, nickel catalyzers, and other chemicals in the work environment. Only a slight excess of cancers, marginally related to exposure category yet not significantly related to length of exposure, was found. The cohort, however, was young but stable, and a continued follow-up is therefore both feasible and justifiable, since it is likely to yield important information about the potential hazards associated with the tergal polymer industry.

[Insulin-dependent juvenile diabetes. Descriptive study in the Rhône Department].

A systematic study of juvenile onset diabetes cases observed in the Rhône department between 1960 and 1979 indicates an annual incidence of 4.7/10(5) children from 0 to 15 years of age. This incidence is lower than that which has been reported for Great Britain and some Scandinavian countries. There was a surprisingly high incidence among immigrant children from North Africa (10.2/10(5) children) and also in some urban areas (middle-sized cities and the southeast suburb of Lyon). Farmers' children seem more often affected than others. The seasonal trend cited in earlier studies was also noted here for children between 5 and 15 years of age. These findings are compatible with the concept that environmental factors play some role in the onset of juvenile diabetes.

[Seasonal variation in the nyctohemeral rhythm of prolactin in cows].

Seasonal variation of prolactin nyctohemeral rhythm has been studied by radioimmunoassay on female cattle of the white blue belgian breed. Animals are divided into three groups as age is concerned : 6 calves, 6 heifers and 5 lactating cows. In december all groups of animals show a significant increase of plasma prolactin concentration between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Calves and heifers have a second secretion period either at the end of the afternoon between 17 and 19 p.m. or during the evening between 20 and 23 p.m. The circadian rhythm observed in may with heifers is similar to that in december with two waves whose relative importance is different at the two seasons considered. Nyctohemeral rhythm of prolactin in cattle is age and season dependent.

Testosterone plasma profiles, as a function of age in young bulls from the bovine double-muscled Belgian white blue breed a preliminary report.

Plasma testosterone (T) 10 hour-profiles were determined at 10-day intervals in 29 young double-muscled bulls from the BBB-V breed between the ages 130 days and 190 days. Age at onset of T pulsatile profiles allowed to distinguish 3 groups of animals: We hypothesize that early appearance of pulsatile T profiles might mean precocity in onset of male puberty and sexual maturity. If this assumption is true, determination of T plasma profiles at a well specified age, might allow early selection of sexually precocious and capable BBB-V males.

Costs of nosocomial infection in a neonatal unit.

Hospital costs for 61 neonates with acquired nosocomial infection were compared with 61 matched, uninfected controls. The increase in length of hospital stay (+23 per cent) added to the number of laboratory tests increase total hospitalization costs to 32 per cent. An additional US $1250 for each case of infection is the cost to the Social Security system. The importance of this increase, contrasted with the generally benign nature of the infections studied, justifies the maintenance of high standards of quality in neonatal care.

Plasma testosterone and LH responses to LHRH in double-muscled bulls treated with trenbolone acetate and zeranol.

Twenty-four double-muscled Belgian White Blue bulls were assigned, according to body weight, to two groups with and without treatment with anabolic agents. Implants containing 140 mg trenbolone and 36 mg zeranol (Forplix) were inserted sc on the upper face of the ear flap. Plasma concentrations of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) were determined at d 0, 30 and 60 of the experimental period. Mean testosterone levels at d 0 for treated and controls were, respectively, 2.1 and 1.7 ng/ml during the 10-h sampling period. At d 30 and 60, testosterone levels were strongly depressed in implanted bulls (.2 ng/ml) as compared with 2.5 and 1.7 ng/ml in control bulls (P less than .001 at d 30 and P less than .01 at d 60). Average plasma LH concentrations were identical in the two groups at d 0 and 60 (1.1 and 1.5 ng/ml, respectively), but showed a slight decrease at d 30 in the treated group (P less than .10). The pulsatile character of LH and testosterone profiles was abolished by the Forplix treatment. Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) injection at d 0 was followed in both groups by an immediate and sharp increase in plasma LH concentrations. The LH response reached a maximal value between 20 to 40 min postinjection and then declined rapidly. On the contrary, Forplix treatment strongly reduced LH and testosterone responses to LHRH stimulation in treated animals. Average daily gain and feed to gain ratios were 1.087 +/- .127 and 7.52 +/- .32 kg, respectively, for the control bulls and 1.335 +/- .092 and 6.24 +/- .24 kg for the Forplix-treated bulls, thus clearly showing a beneficial effect of Forplix treatment.

[Viral hepatitis: incidence and epidemiologic pattern in an urban area (author's transl)].

In order to describe the incidence and the epidemiologic pattern of viral hepatitis (V.H.) in a French urban area, with a special attention to ambulatory cases, an epidemiological information system has been developed during one year. The physicians (sample), the medical laboratories and, at a lesser degree, the hospital care units, have taken part in this work. The incidence rate of ambulatory cares has been estimated 85 cases/10(5) persons (69/110), less than previously assumed. Non-B V.H. remains more frequent (52 cases/10(5) persons), but B.V.H. are rather close to them (33 cases/10(5) persons). Large differences exist between geographic areas, without evident rational. Higher incidence rates characterize children (especially 5-9 years) and migrant people (especially from North Africa): those facts are completely account by very high rates within the subgroup of migrant children (473 and 260 cases/10(5) persons). The reported patterns allows us to point on this high risk characteristic of migrant's children and to assume an important modification in the pattern of local inhabitants V.H. in the region. These trends have to be followed by further studies.

[Survival and humoral response of mice infected with Treponema pallidum (author's transl)].

To judge the pathogenicity of Treponema palllidum in mice, we inoculated two groups of animals. 1) One with a normal immune system : adult Swiss mice. 2) The other with an immune system presenting a defect in T cells : athymic Nude mice. No lesions appeared at the points of inoculation and the survival of these animals was not modified compared with control animals. We have also carried out a study of antitreponema antibodies in adult and new-born Swiss mice, using, for the adults, various concentrations of treponema pallidum and various routes of inoculation. In adult mice, the search for antibodies by fluorescence, showed, firstly, that the intradermal route permits a more rapid humoral response than the intraperitoneal route, with higher antibody titers. Furthermore, an inoculum of 8,6 X 10(6) per mice, gives earlier results and higher titers than those obtained with an inoculum twice lower. The earliness of the positive Nelson test is independent of the route of inoculation but related to the injected dose. On the other hand, the Kline reaction remained negative for all groups of mice throughout the whole period of our study. In new-born mice, 76% only became positive on fluorescence and Nelson test.
