The palatability of three bulk additives was studied in volunteers under 40 and over 60 years of age. Women highly significantly preferred Normacol Special (Norgine) to Fybogel (Reckitt & Colman) and Celevac Granules (W.B.P.). On both preference and palatability score Normacol Special was significantly preferred to Celevac Granules, as it was in the under 40's on palatability score and in the over 60's on preference, but in the latter, sex may have accounted for the difference observed. Volunteers under the age of 40 gave Celevac a significantly higher palatability score than Fybogel; the reverse occurred in the over 60's. These results have therapeutic implications in patients with different gastro-intestinal disorders.

A large number of commercial preparations are now available for calibrating or checking the stability of automatic blood counters. Most of these preparations are supplied with 'stated' values though the methods for assigning these values are not described in sufficient detail to allow for an adequate assessment of the validity. The Haemocytometry Panel of the British Committee for Standards in Haematology are therefore proposing a draft protocol for testing calibration and quality control materials. Comments on the draft protocol are invited, either as letters to the Editor of Clinical and Laboratory Haematology or in confidence to the Chairman of the Haemocytometry Panel.
The dietary fibre intake of 25 patients with the irritable bowel syndrome was assessed by dietary recall over one week for the period before onset of symptoms, at diagnosis and after six months treatment with bran and a fibre-rich diet, and compared with controls matched for age and sex. Mean intake of patients fell from 20.2 g per day before onset of symptoms to 17.8 g at diagnosis (n.s.), when it was significantly less than the controls' intake of 22.6 g (P less than 0.01). The 20 patients who improved with treatment increased their intake from 18.9 g to 24.8 g (P less than 0.02); the five patients who did not improve did not increase their intake significantly (13.5 g to 15.6 g).
