Isoproterenol--induced damage to the liver of chick embryos.

Isoproterenol has been shown to cause severe liver damage in chick embryos. Most severe lesions were observed in embryos 10 to 12 days old, which showed extensive parenchymal necrosis. In older embryos, the lesions were mostly represented by areas of fatty degeneration. In 6 to 9-day-old embryos, the changes were indistinct (slight). The necrotic foci underwent slow resorption with disperse dystrophic calcification. Surviving hepatocytes around the damaged areas revealed some regenerative phenomena. The possible cause of marked hepatotoxicity of isoproterenol for chick embryos is discussed.

[Pathogenesis of embolotoxic reactions].

Own investigations concerning the principal mechanisms of Hoigné's syndrome demonstrated that the phenomenology of embolotoxic reactions depends in certain pre-conditions on high pressure during a rapid injection with the result of penetration of the drug into the blood stream. The occurrence of the syndrome and its symptomatology depend on the size of the crystals or lipid droplets that enter the blood stream, on the solubility of the crystals in the body, on the toxicity of the components of a particular drug and on the volume of the injected drug that enters the blood vessels. For the reasons mentioned above the symptomatology of the syndrome is variable and depends on the type of medicament applied.

[Wounds caused by lasers (forensic medicine aspects)].

Features and conditions of laser usage in medicine are concisely presented. Histopathological lesions of skin, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, liver and other organs are described characterizing injuries caused by CO2 laser in experimental of human surgical material. A narrow carbonized border and giant cell reparative reaction on the opposite margin, tissue and cell evaporization and a special type of muscle and adipose tissue necrosis enable discriminate laser injuries from surgical wounds and electrocautery injuries. Conditions of laser usage from the point of view of patient's safety and professional hygiene are shown.

[Hereditary drusen of Bruch's membrane. I. Clinical and light microscopical study ].

The authors describe a family with autosomal-dominant inheritance of hereditary Bruch's membrane drusen. After the death of the proband who was kept under clinical observation with fluorescein-angiographic examination over a period of seven years, the authors obtained the bulbus for histopathologic study. Light microscopic changes in the boundary-line structures of the retina and choroid and the occurrence of an intraretinal membrane in the maculopapillary bunch area are described. This membrane is thought to represent a "predisciform stage" in the development of this hereditary dystrophy.
