Recent research has demonstrated the importance of particular features of mothers' speech in influencing the rate of language acquisition in very young children. In the present study of 22 mother-child pairs, the occurrence of these features was examined in samples of mothers' speech to children (aged 18 to 29 months), obtained in unstructured observations in the homes. The features facilitating language acquisition were found to be more frequent in the context of joint attention to pictures or books; speech in other contexts showed social-class differences, with a higher frequency of 'facilitating' features in the speech of middle-class mothers. There was also a tendency for the relative frequency of these features to be positively associated with the children's linguistic ability.
The contract system can be a motivating factor to student learning. Caution is necessary to ensure the students who are graduating from the program have the knowledge base to pass the SBTPE. The faculty of one program believe their contract system which has evolved from five years of experience meets these criteria. Furthermore, patient care ultimately benefits. The nursing student exposed to an educational system in which his individual worth is recognized and learning needs met can respect the patient's rights and his individual health needs.

Intact and TPTx animals showed the expected afternoon increase in serum LH,FSH and prolactin levels. But the afternoon increase in serum LH levels in TPTx rats was less than that observed for intact animals (p less than 0.001). Neither serum prolactin nor FSH levels were altered by TPTx.
Phototherapy was used to treat 20 newborn babies whose birthweight was below 1500 g and whose plasma bilirubin exceeded 8 mg/100 ml. The plasma bilirubin level was maintained below 13 mg/100 ml except in 4 babies whose level exceeded 13 mg/100 ml before treatment was started. In 60% of an untreated group of larger babies previously reported the plasma bilirubin level exceeded this figure. Phototherapy seems to control the plasma bilirubin level satisfactorily in very low birthweight infants, but frequent measurements on the second and third days of life are advised in order that treatment may be started promptly when it exceeds 8 mg/100 ml.

Many reports indicate a significant negative correlation between death-rates for coronary heart-disease (C.H.D.) and water hardness. A reverse situation exists in the twin Kansas cities, U.S.A. Kansas City, Kansas, has water which is more than twice as hard as the softened water of Kansas City, Missouri, from the same source. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were similar, but blood-pressure was higher in Kansas City, Kansas, and this correlated with higher serum-sodium, lower serum-potassium, and a tenfold higher serum-cadmium. Serum calcium and magnesium levels were higher in Kansas, while copper, chromium, cobalt, and zinc were higher in Missouri. The serum studies were con ducted on two matched groups of 260 adults from each of the sample cities. Hypertension may account for the reverse C.H.D. rate noted and be cadmium related.

The occurrence of homologous interference in the replication of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus was demonstrated after successive passages of partially purified virus at high input multiplicities in trout and Atlantic salmon cell cultures. Pretreatment of cell cultures with interfering virus inhibited the replication of homologous standard infectious virus but not unrelated viruses. The ability of infectious pancreatic interfering virus to interfere with homologous virus was abolished with UV irradiation, immune serum, and freeze-thawing.

Cell cultures of trout gonad tissue (RTG-2) and Atlantic salmon heart, kidney, liver, and spleen tissue were inoculated with 50 50% tissue culture infective doses (TCID(50)) of infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) virus per cell, and the titer of cell-associated and released virus was determined from 2 to 16 h postinoculation (PI). Cover slips were collected over the same period and stained for IPN viral antigen by the direct immunofluorescent (FA) technique. Viral replication was detected after a latent period of approximately 2 to 4 h and reached a peak titer of 10(8.2) to 10(8.4) TCID(50) per ml at 8 to 10 h PI. The release of virus was more rapid in Atlantic salmon cells than in RTG-2 cells. Viral antigen was first detected by FA from 3 to 4 h PI. Approximately 75 to 80% of the cells contained antigen in the cytoplasm 9 to 11 h PI. The direct FA technique was found to be a sensitive method for detecting IPN virus in infected cells. Three strains of IPN virus were tested for serological cross reactions by FA and virus neutralization tests.
