Triadic interactions between mother, pre-school age first-born, and 14-month-old second-born siblings were studied in 40 families as part of a longitudinal study using home observations. Interactions between mother and second-born exerted as important influence on the behaviour of the first-born; individual differences in the response of the first-born children were associated with difference in temperament of the first child, their reaction to the sibling birth, and with the sex of the sibling dyad. The age gap between siplings and the sex of sibling dyad influenced the time mother and second-born spent in interaction and the quality of this interaction.

Twelve males with azoospermia secondary to exposure to the nematocide 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane were challenged to iv LRH (100 micrograms), TRH (200 micrograms), and metoclopramide (MET; 10 mg) administered 30 min apart. When compared to 24 male controls, both basal FSH and LH levels as well as peak gonadotropin responses to LRH were increased in the azoospermic group. The patients also had increased total estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) as well as testosterone-binding globulins levels. Free T levels, however, were not significantly different from the controls. Basal PRL levels were similar in the two groups. However, the peak PRL responses to both TRH and MET were significantly increased in the azoospermia subjects (P < 0.001). In both groups, the PRL response to MET was greater than to TRH. In the individual control and azoospermic subjects, there was no correlation between the PRL response and E2, T, or the E2 to T ratio. However, a positive correlation did exist between testosterone-binding globulin levels and the PRL response to TRH and MET. Although the precise mechanism underlying the PRL hyperresponsiveness is unknown, it may be an estrogen-induced phenomenon.

A rabbit serum fraction was prepared which contained antibody specific for unique antigen(s) found in human condylomata acuminata tissue but not in other human papillomatous or normal tissues. Indirect immunofluorescent staining of cryostat sections of human tissues demonstrated an intense nuclear fluorescence in cells of the prickle cell layer of condylomata acuminata sections. Nuclear fluorescence was not apparent in cells in the basal or dermal layers. The serum fraction did not elicit nuclear fluorescence in epithelial cells of tissue from human vulva, human foreskin, juvenile hand wart, plantar wart, or squamous cell papilloma of the cervix. This demonstration of antigens unique to epithelial cells of condylomata acuminata may prove useful in the often difficult diagnosis of cervical condylomata.

Comparison between ratings of children's temperament from maternal interview and ratings by an observer in a sample of 40 families showed a high rate of agreement for temperament traits other than that of activity. When the temperatment assessment by maternal interview was compared with the data from direct observation of the child, the results provided some validation for the temperament assessment interview ratings, and also showed that differences in maternal behaviour were associated with the reported differences in child temperament. Some agreement was found between the data from direct observation of the families, and the description by mothers of the behaviour of their first-born children after the birth of a sibling.
The study sought to examine the effects of varying interval length on the representation of data obtained using modified frequency time sampling. A 7-category scale was used to observe reliably the behavior of eight psychiatric inpatients. Using electronic real time recording equipment, it was possible to computer analyze the obtained data at varying interval lengths, the shortest interval being 1.0 seconds. It was found that increasing the interval length had little effect on the percentage of total duration recorded within each behavioral category, suggesting that this is a relatively stable measure of behavior. Percentage total events for each category was less stable with increasing interval lengths. The number of recorded events within each category tended to decrease, while their average durations tended to increase, as a function of increasing the interval length. The data suggest that the current practice of determining interval length in an arbitrary fashion, or on the basis of convention, should be abandoned. Rather, such a decision should be empirically determined for each particular observation scale and subject group. One method by which this might be achieved is presented.

Three patients are presented who developed delayed intracerebral hematomas after head injury. Two patients had essentially negative CT scans on admission and developed intracerbral hematomas within 24 h after injury. They required surgical treatment and had fatal outcomes. The third patient presented with an epidural hematoma on CT scan, developed an intracerebral hematoma 48 h after evacuation of the epidural hematoma, and did well with conservative management.

The interaction of herpes simplex type 1 with two eukaryotic cell lines (BHK-21 and BALB/3T3) was investigated by flow microfluorometric analysis after cell staining with mithramycin. Uninfected, lytically infected and persistently infected cell populations were examined. Viral replication within an infected cell population could be detected via FMF analysis. The low levels of viral replication occurring within persistently infected cell populations were also detectable. A marked degree of correlation was noted between morphological observations of infected cultures and the FMF profiles obtained. The results deomonstrate the great potential of this technique for the early detection and analysis of viral infection.
