Evaluation of the teratogenic potential of a spray adhesive in hamsters.

Pregnant Syrian hamsters were placed in a 100-1 static inhalation chamber for 30 min twice daily on days 5-10 of gestation and exposed to 8.0 +/- 0.13, 11.6 +/- 0.11,or 13.23 +/- 0.49 g of "Foil Art Adhesive" and killed on day 14. Controls were placed in adjacent identical chambers but received no spray. The spray adhesive was toxic but not teratogenic at the doses administered. Maternal alopecia occurred upon exposure to the 2 highest dose levels, and 1 female died during exposure to the highest dose level. Fetal survival was not affected. Mean fetal weight was significantly decreased after exposure to all 3 dose levels, and delayed skeletal development occurred but was not dose related.

Tuberculosis outbreak in rhesus monkeys immunosuppressed with antithymocyte globulin.

Tuberculosis lesions were found in necropsied monkeys used in studies involving immunosuppression. Correlations were made between the demonstration of reduced numbers of circulating T cells, the duration of allograft survival and the appearance of T cell-dependent tuberculin sensitivity. The immunosuppressed state of these monkeys may have resulted in false tuberculin reactions. The report confirms the necessity for sequential tuberculin tests on rhesus monkeys prior to their being used in experiments.

Effects of selenium compounds on formate metabolism and coincidence of selenium-75 incorporation and formic dehydrogenase activity in cell-free preparations of Escherichia coli.

The effects of selenite, selenocystine, and selenomethionine in a defined growth medium on formic dehydrogenase biosynthesis in aerobically and anaerobically grown Escherichia coli have been studied. Sucrose gradient centrifugation of a partially purified enzyme demonstrated a coincidence of (75)Se incorporation and formic dehydrogenase activity.

Cannabinoids in glaucoma: a primary screening procedure.

A procedure was developed for screening of cannabinoids for their ability to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) using normal rabbits. Eight animals per group were used for statistical significance of data. A negative control group was used for every screen as well as a positive control with 1.5 mg/kg delta 9-THC given intravenously (I.V.). All compounds were tested by I.V. injection and IOP measurements were taken periodically for 5 hours. Data were analyzed by a computer program which takes into account the change in IOP of the control group. Following this procedure we found that delta 8-THC, delta 9-THC, cannabinol, and nabilone were active while cannabidiol was inactive.

Gastric colonization of the ferret with Helicobacter species: natural and experimental infections.

Helicobacter mustelae, isolated from the stomachs of adult ferrets, appears to have a world-wide distribution. Ferrets are colonized with H. mustelae at a young age, usually 5-6 weeks; in our experience 100% of adult ferrets are colonized in both the antrum and the fundus. Gastric infection correlates with elevation of serum IgG antibodies to H. mustelae. In the oxyntic mucosa the presence of superficial gastritis coincides closely with the presence of H. mustelae. In the distal antrum the organism is associated with chronic inflammation occupying the full thickness of the mucosa. In addition to lesions seen in the distal antrum, focal glandular atrophy and regeneration are noted in the proximal antrum and transitional mucosa. Antibiotics used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in humans are also effective in eliminating H. mustelae from ferrets. H. mustelae-free ferrets do not become colonized with H. pylori when challenged orally; however, sparse colonization follows oral inoculation with a related gastric organism, "Helicobacter felis." Controlled studies of the pathophysiology of gastroduodenal disease induced by Helicobacter species can be performed in H. mustelae-infected ferrets and their H. mustelae-negative counterparts.
