[P6 acupoint injection reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting].

Despite improvements in anesthetic techniques postoperative vomiting still remains a problem, particularly in ambulant outpatients, and when an opioid is given before or during anesthesia. Anti-emetic are of limited value and often cause drowsiness or other side effects. We report a study in which a simple acupuncture procedure was used in patients undergoing fraction D & C under standard intravenous anesthesia. Sixty-four patients were included and allocated randomly into one of the two groups: control group receiving standard fentanyl-valium-thiopentone anesthesia alone, and the other group receiving injection of 3 mL normal saline into the P6 acupuncture point after the anesthesia. Ten out of the 32 control patients experienced nausea or vomiting compared with only 2 out of 32 patients receiving acupoint injection. The reduction in nausea was significant. These findings cannot be well explained, but it is recommended that the use of acupuncture as an anti-emetic should be explored further.

Influence of cellulose structure on its digestibility in the rat.

The effect of modifying the structural properties of a purified cellulose on its subsequent digestion in the rat was determined. The three structurally unique types of cellulose used in the study were a commercial microcrystalline cellulose, a ball-milled cellulose, and an acid-swollen cellulose. The ball-milled cellulose and the acid-swollen cellulose were prepared from the microcrystalline cellulose starting material. Differences in structure between the types of cellulose were determined by X-ray diffraction measurements and by analysis of their in vitro enzymatic saccharification. The extent of fermentation of each type of cellulose within the rat intestinal tract was determined. Each of the three types of cellulose had a unique structure with respect to its measured crystallinity index and its rate of degradation in vitro by cellulase enzymes. The measured in vivo digestion coefficient for microcrystalline, ball-milled, and acid-swollen cellulose was 8.8, 12.2 and 20.3%, respectively. This represents a significant difference (P less than 0.05) in the extent of fermentation of the different structural types of cellulose within the rat intestine. The results demonstrate that modifying the structural properties of dietary cellulose can affect in vivo response.

Evaluation of contact lenses by microbial enumeration and protein determination.

Contact lenses worn for varying periods of time (from 1 to 48 months) were subjected to microbiological examination by plate counts and protein determination. Seventy percent of the lenses displayed bacterial colony counts below 120 colony-forming units (CFU)/lens, 28 percent were in the range of 140 to 9060 CFU/lens, and one lens was contaminated with greater than 6 x 10(4) CFU/lens. Fungal contaminants were detected in three lens specimens in the range of 220 to 760 CFU/lens. Protein accumulation showed wide variation of up to 1.2 mg of protein per lens. Statistical analysis indicated highly significant associations (p less than 0.001) between the bacterial colony counts obtained with three different media. Some significant associations were found between the protein concentration and bacterial counts. The data did not indicate statistically significant relations between the above variables and either the water content or the length of wear of the contact lenses.

Effects of pantethine supplementation to diets with different energy cereals on hepatic lipogenesis of laying hens.

Effects on dietary pantethine supplementation on hepatic lipid accumulation and on the activities of lipogenic-related enzymes in the liver were studied in Single Comb White Leghorn laying hens fed isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets containing corn or barley as the carbohydrate source. Addition of 200 ppm pantethine to the corn-soy (CS) basal diet significantly reduced abdominal fat weight, liver triglyceride, as well as total cholesterol and 17 beta-estradiol concentrations in the plasma. Activities of citrate cleavage enzyme (EC 4.1.3.8; CCE) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) in the liver were significantly reduced when the CS basal diet was supplemented with pantethine, but the activities of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.40; NADP-MDH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49; G6PDH), were not significantly affected. However, liver triglyceride, total cholesterol, and 17 beta-estradiol concentrations in plasma as well as the activities of CCE, FAS, and NADP-MDH in liver were significantly lower in laying hens fed the barley-soy (BS) basal diet than in those fed the CS basal diet. Pantethine supplementation to the BS diet failed to show any significant effect on liver triglyceride content and on the hepatic activities of lipogenic-related enzymes. There were no significant differences in liver weight, rate of egg production, and egg weight among dietary treatments. these results suggest that dietary pantethine is effective in reducing the accumulation of liver and abdominal fat in laying hens fed a CS diet.

Right ventricular ejection fraction. Validation of first-pass radionuclide studies by contrast angiography.

The accuracy of first-pass radionuclide angiocardiography (FPRNA) in the assessment of right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) using a multicrystal scintillation camera in the right anterior oblique view has not been reported. To test the validity of this technique, RVEFs derived from first-pass time-activity curves with and without background correction were compared with those obtained from contrast ventriculography in 36 patients. Background regions-of-interest tested included tricuspid valve, free wall, and horseshoe-shaped approaches. The tricuspid valve approach yielded a mean RVEF of 0.485 +/- 0.100 (SD) which slightly underestimated the contrast mean value (0.553 +/- 0.099, p less than 0.05) but correlated well (r = 0.88). The horseshoe approach yielded a mean value of 0.548 +/- 0.100 which approximated the contrast mean value and also correlated well (r = 0.81). The free wall approach yielded a mean of 0.502 +/- 0.095 which did not differ from contrast data (p greater than 0.05) but correlated less well (r = 0.77). With the method without background correction, a much lower mean value (0.387 +/- 0.081, p less than 0.01) and less correlation (r = 0.77) were obtained. Thus, FPRNA using a multicrystal camera in the right anterior oblique view is a reliable technique for measuring RVEF when a tricuspid valve or horseshoe-shaped background approach is employed, but is less accurate if the time-activity curve without background correction is applied.
