Criteria audit of surgery for carcinoma of the large intestine in Melbourne teaching hospitals.

A criteria audit of patients undergoing surgery for carcinoma of the large intestine in three Melbourne teaching hospitals revealed a considerable variation in the degree of compliance with individual criteria, and a high complication rate with approximately two-thirds of the patients suffering one or more complications. The uniform system of data gathering used provides a baseline for future studies.

Insertion of a new gene of viral origin into bone marrow cells of mice.

DNA containing the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSVtk) gene was used to transform wild-type tk+ mouse L cells to a tk++ status in vitro using methotrexate as a selective agent. HSVtk DNA was also used to transform mouse bone marrow cells in vitro. Transformed marrow cells injected into irradiated and methotrexate-treated recipient mice gave rise to proliferating cells which in some cases dominated the marrow population and which contained HSVtk gene sequences.

Environmental crowding modifies responding to noxious stimuli and the effects of mu- and kappa-agonists.

The effects of social crowding in rats on nociception and analgesic actions of mu- and kappa-opioid agonists agonist qualitatively different stimuli were examined. Crowding produced higher control thresholds for electroshock and paw pinch pressure but not for noxious heat. Naloxone did not effect shock thresholds in crowded or noncrowded rats but it produced hyperalgesia in both groups when pressure and heat were the stimuli. Crowding reduced the antinociceptive potency against pressure of kappa- and mu-agonists but the opposite effect was seen with heat. A comparison of the ratios of potencies against pressure and heat indicates that crowding differentially modified kappa- and mu-receptor systems.

Rhythmic nature of naloxone-induced aversions and nociception in rats.

Taste conditioning procedures revealed a rhythmic fluctuation in the aversiveness of naloxone in opiate-naive rats. This rhythm exhibited two peaks during each 24-hour period. One peak was evident in the light phase and the second, which was more prominent occurred in the dark phase. Analgesia produced by morphine showed an essentially similar rhythm with heat and pressure as noxious stimuli. Although control nociceptive thresholds for heat also showed this rhythm, those for pressure showed only one broad peak through most of the dark phase. With noxious heat the hyperalgesic effect of naloxone also showed two peaks of activity but, as in control responding, this was not true for pressure. Opioid systems mediating nociception of different stimuli may show differential diurnal fluctuations.
