Malignant hyperthermia developed in the 94th minute of anesthesia undergone by a nearly 5-year-old girl. Two minutes after re-filling the halothane vaporizer, muscle rigor and tachyarrhythmia occurred. Massive myoglobinuria setting in on the day of operation reached its peak on the 1st postoperative day. Only following this were the highest CK activities to be recorded. CK-BB could not be detected at any time.
Nineteen subjects (10 males and 9 females, aged between 18 and 61 years) with an occipital 4-5 c/s EEG rhythm were tested using a multidimensional psychological test program. The program consisted of the IST of Amthauer, the Raven Test, the German version of the MMPI ("MMPI Saarbrücken"), the Cattell 16-PF-questionnaire, Brickenkamp's d2-Test, and a test battery for psychomotor impairment. A group of normal persons with a regular alpha EEG, matched according to sex and age, was used to provide test norms for the 4-5 c/s EEG group. No difference in intelligence was found, but statistically significant differences were found in some personality traits in the MMPI and the 16-PF-questionnaire. Taking into consideration that the 4-5 c/s EEG group of the study is a subjective sample not randomly selected, this study showed that the male subjects with a 4-5 c/s rhythm as more sensitive, more tender and gentle, more anxious, and less tolerant of stress when compared with the control group; in terms of sex-specific personality traits, they tend to show more female features. Furthermore, the clinical observations of the psychological test date are discussed, i.e., that the subjects with 4-5 c/s rhythms suffer more frequently from functional somatic complaints (observed in 13 cases: 9 with neurovegetative disturbances, 4 with psychosomatic diseases) and/or show psychopathological features (observed in 12 cases: 8 with abnormal personality traits, 4 with neurotic personality development).
Detailed studies of steady-state ion fluxes in murine lymphocytes were used to examine for possible ionic changes generated by surface Ig, the antigen receptor of B lymphocytes. When bound by ligands, surface Ig triggered the mobilization and release of 45Ca2+ from the cell interior by a transmembrane process requiring crosslinking of the bound receptors. This ionic event was unique for two reasons: (a) it did not occur when other common lymphocyte surface macromolecules were bound with rabbit anti-lymphocyte antibodies; and (b) it was not accompanied by a general perturbation of lymphocyte ionic properties such as a change in 42K+ fluxes nor did it depend on the presence of extracellular ions. Capping of surface Ig shares the same time sequence, dose response, requirement for crosslinking, and lack of dependence on extracellular ions. These correlations suggest that mobilization of intracellular Ca2+ may represent an early ionic signal for the contractile activation of lymphocytes that generates capping of surface Ig.
The long-term effect of single intramuscular injections of various doses of dimeric testosterone and of testosterone enanthate into castrated male rats upon serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), pituitary LH, and on the weight of the seminal vesicles, the ventral prostate and the levator ani muscle, was investigated. The effect of the enanthate was characterized by a rapid onset and a protracted androgenic action and a suppression of serum LH, while the dimeric testosterone brought about only a moderate but very even depot effect. The injection of 5 mg of the dimeric testosterone caused a positive feedback effectu upon LH release for 16 weeks. The results indicate that the dimeric testosterone may exert is hormonal effects as intact ester.
Murine B-lymphocytes during translatory motion undergo a series of changes with respect to their morphology and distribution of surface immunoglobulins (Ig). The sequence of events comprising these changes was followed by fluorescence microscopy and a correlated detection of surface features by scanning microscopy on exactly the same cell. A round, presumably non-motile lymphocyte exhibited a random distribution of Ig and its surface displayed evenly distributed microvilli. Formation of a ruffled edge at one pole, accompanied by a decreased fluorescence at this pole marked the initial events of lymphocyte motility. In the subsequent stages, the ruffled edge became progressively prominent and displayed a constriction at its base, while the microvilli were displaced to the opposite pole. Ig in such lymphocytes was localized at the trailing, microvilli-rich pole. Thin sections of motile lymphocytes revealed Ig, microtubules, microfilaments and coated vesicles as the characteristic features of the trailing end. These observations may have bearing on the mechanism of lymphocyte motility and spontaneous capping of Ig.
Results of immunologic and histologic studies on rabbits immunized with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) showed dependence of the immunologic response (PFC, RFC) on the histologic structure of the spleen, particularly width of the sinusoidal vessels. Histologic changes in the spleen are a result of immunization and their intensity is related to the dose of antigen. The influence of dosage of antigen and histologic structure of the spleen on regulation of the immunologic response are discussed.
The most important problems of surgery in the aged patient are: immediate recognition of risk factor (few, but reliable laboratory parameters in the sense of "searching tactics": status of blood, blood sugar, urea-N, creatinine, cholinesterase), careful procedural choice, immediate mobilisation postoperatively, subsequent rehabilitation, if necessary. The operation itself must be fast but careful and as restricted as possible.
Although thrombocytosis is a very common finding after splenectomy, the thromboembolic risk of postsplenectomy thrombocytosis has not been clarified. To our knowledge, this retrospective study of 318 patients without myeloproliferative disorders who underwent splenectomy is the largest of its type. Thrombocytosis developed in 75% of the patients. No substantial increase in the incidence of thromboembolism was detected in patients with thrombocytosis.
A simple and convenient method for the routine determination of clonazepam in tablets by dc polarography is described. Clonazepam is extracted from the sample by ethanol and diluted with pH 4.15 acetate buffer in a volumetric flask. The filtered solution is then polarographed at the dropping mercury electrode versus the saturated calomel electrode. The polarographic wave is well developed; the determination is quantitative, precise, and accurate.
A detailed kinetic analysis of the distribution of cytoplasmic myosin during the capping of various lymphocytic surface molecules revealed two distinct capping mechanisms. (a) Some cell surface molecules, including immunoglobulin, Fc receptor, and thymus leukemia antigen, all cap spontaneously in a small fraction of lymphocytes during locomotion. Cytoplasmic myosin becomes concentrated in the cytoplasm underlying these spontaneous caps. Exposure to specific antibodies causes all three of these surface molecules to cap rapidly with a concomitant redistribution of cytoplasmic myosin to the area of the cap. These antibodies also stimulate cell locomotion. (b) Other lymphocyte surface molecules, including H2 and Thy.1, do not cap spontaneously. Moreover, exposure to antibodies to these molecules causes them to cap slowly without a redistribution of cytoplasmic myosin or stimulation of cell locomotion. Exposure to concanavalin A gives a response intermediate between these two extremes. We believe that the first type of capping is active and may involve a direct link between the surface molecules and the cytoplasmic contractile apparatus. The second type of capping appears to result simply from aggregation of cross-linked molecules in the plane of the membrane.
In the previous study, lymphocyte surface molecules were separated into two subsets depending on whether capping was associated was associated with redistribution of cytoplasmic myosin. In the present study, the effects of the local anesthetic chlorpromazine and of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 were compared. Both drugs affected the surface redistribution of immunoglobulin (Ig), Fc receptors, and the TL antigen--molecules that appear to cap by association with microfilaments--but had no effect on the Thy.1 (theta) and H2 antigens--molecules that cap slowly, apparently unlinked to microfilament function. The capping of Ig, Fc receptor, and TL was inhibited while that of H2 and theta was not. Both drugs reversed the Ig Fc receptor, and TL caps but not the H2 and theta caps. In the former group, the reversal of caps was accompanied by a parallel reversal of the myosin segregated to the cap area. The appearance of myosin after drug treatment varied: chlorpromazine resulted in a diffuse pattern similar to that of normal lymphocytes, whereas A23187 produced an array of aggregates and coarse filaments. The results are compatible with the view that two mechanisms for capping exist in the lymphocyte. The Ca2+ ionophore may affect capping of microfilament-dependent caps by producing a systemic activation of contractile proteins while chlorpromazine may act by disrupting a Ca2+-dependent link between surface complexes and the contractile proteins.

This paper reports that B cells undergoing translatory motion spontaneously segregate their surface Ig to one portion of their plasma membrane. The spontaneous redistribution of surface Ig was found to be: (a) selective, concanavalin A-dependent on translatory motion and energy metabolism. Abundant B cells undergoing motility were found after cultures in lipopolysaccharide or trypsin, or after brief exposure to cholinergic drugs.
