Evidence for an extrinsic immunogen in effective ribosomal vaccines from Salmonella typhimurium.

Previous work has indicated that ribosomes isolated from Salmonella typhimurium were highly immunogenic and afforded excellent protection against homologous challenge. Effective protection was obtained also when ribonucleic acid ( RNA) extracted from these ribosomes was used as a vaccine. In this investigation ribosomes prepared by another method and washed repeatedly in 1 M NH1Cl lost much of their prophylactic potency and yielded poorly protective RNA. The high-salt wash of the ribosomes was immunogenic. The RNA and the protein isolated from the salt wash of the ribosomes were effective vaccines. No intrinsic component of the ribosomes was removed by the NH4Cl wash, since the ability of both "crude" and "clean" ribosomes to function equally well in an in vitro protein synthesizing system was demonstrated. The presence of a component with toxic properties similar to those of endotoxin was found in active vaccines but not in weak ones. This was shown by the ability of effective vaccines to kill lead acetate-sensitized mice and to induce tolerance to endotoxin.

A urodynamic view of bladder outflow obstruction in the female: factors influencing the results of treatment.

169 female patients with outlet obstruction have been studied urodynamically. The results of treatment of the outlet obstruction in 102 patients have been analysed and the reason for the failures discussed. Patients with stable detrusors and those with symptoms of recurrent urinary tract infection responded well to treatment, provided this relieved the obstruction adequately; symptomatic relief was less common in patients with unstable detrusors, despite adequate outflow readjustment.

Expression of bone sialoprotein mRNA by cells lining the mouse tooth root during cementogenesis.

Adhesion molecules are considered to have an active role in controlling cell differentiation, although the mechanisms involved have yet to be determined. The developing tooth provides an excellent model to use for determining the factors/processes regulating cell differentiation. The studies presented here focused specifically on the timed and spatial expression of a bone-associated adhesion molecule, bone sialoprotein, during tooth root development. Mandibular tissues in the first molar region of CD-1 mice, at sequential stages of development, were analysed by in situ hybridization. The results demonstrate distinct expression of bone sialoprotein in surrounding bone at early stages of tooth development. At stages of active cementogenesis, bone sialoprotein transcripts were specific to cells lining the root surface, with limited expression in the surrounding connective tissue (periodontal ligament) region. The strong expression of bone sialoprotein, a mineral-specific protein having the capacity to act as a nucleator of hydroxyapatite in vitro, by cells lining the root surface at early stages of cementogenesis suggests that this molecule is operative in the cell/matrix events that accompany cementum formation.

Improving substance abuse treatment for indigent clients in Detroit.

It has been clearly established that substance abuse treatment works (De Leon 1988). Thus, activities which increase the proportion of indigent clients in Detroit who actually get into treatment and activities which help indigent clients stay in treatment are likely to significantly improve treatment outcomes. The Target Cities projects in general and the Detroit Target Cities project in particular represent some of the few efforts currently underway to determine intervention activities which significantly improve treatment outcomes for indigent substance abusing clients. Subsequent evaluation has shown that the proportion of clients referred by the CDRS who were actually admitted into a treatment program increased significantly after full implementation of the Detroit Target Cities screening and pretreatment case management activities. Furthermore, the average time between referral by the CDRS and admission into a treatment program decreased significantly (Tucker 1997). Evaluation of the Detroit Target Cities jail-based substance abuse treatment program also showed a significant increase in the proportion of clients who remained drug free after full implementation of the program (Tucker 1998).

Australian perioperative nursing at Royal Adelaide Hospital.

1. The acronym PRODUCTS has been established to integrate into practice beliefs about perioperative nursing at Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. 2. The nursing practice model used focuses on the essential components, interdependence, and crossover components of clinical practice, management, and education aspects of nursing. 3. An emphasis has been placed on valuing the expertise within the clinical team, and providing all nurses with a framework to further develop their nursing care and clinical competence.
