[Upper lateral cartilage transposition in the surgical management of nasal valve incompetence].

We have operated eight patients with nasal obstruction secondary to internal valvular incompetence. In three of them an alar collapse were associated. Diagnosis was made by anamnesis and clinical exploration. Open rhinoplasty approach was employed. Surgical technique was the transposition of lateral over alar cartilage. In the three patients with alar collapse, a fixation graft of septal cartilage were added to the previous technique. Nasal obstruction and valvular incompetence missapeared in all the patients.

[Intranasal approaches for pituitary area tumors. Our experience].

Transsphenoidal approach is the most commonly employed surgical technique for the resection of pituitary tumors. We present our experience in the transnasal-transsphenoidal approach in 30 patients undergoing pituitary surgery from 1998 to 2002. Ten patients underwent surgery via a sublabial-transeptal-transsphenoidal approach, 15 patients via a transeptal-transsphenoidal approach and 5 patients via a pure endoscopic transnasal-transsphenoidal. The pathological study showed 29 pituitary adenomas and 1 Rathe's cleft cyst. We conclude that the pure endoscopic transnasal-transsphenoidal approach guided by a navigator-system is safest and more effective approach. We reserved the transeptal-transsphenoidal approach for cases with obstructive septal deflection and poor pneumatized sphenoid sinuses. We do not recommend the use of the sublabial-trans-sphenoidal approach.

Cis-diaminedichloro platinum ototoxicity. An experimental study.

Four groups of guinea pigs received different doses of cis-platinum. SEM and TEM showed a direct relation between the dose and the damage. The first row of OHC is the first one to be damaged. The IHC are more resistant than the OHC. The pattern of destruction is similar to the one produced by the aminoglucoside antibiotics.

Topographic distribution of laryngeal motor neurons in the nucleus ambiguus of the guinea pig studied by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique.

The topographic distribution of Nucleus Ambiguus (NA) motor neurons innervating the intrinsic laryngeal musculature in the guinea pig has not been studied previously. We used 25 guinea pigs anaesthetized by Penthrane (Methoxyflurane) inhalation. Horseradish peroxidase type VI (40%) was used. The motor neurons traced are distributed in cellular groups elongated rostro-caudally in a tract of the brain stem situated between a rostral plane compatible with the location of the retrofacial nucleus, and a caudal plane some millimetres below the obex. The motor neurons observed do not exhibit differential morphology in relation to the different muscles studied.

[Comparative study of histology and flow cytometry results obtained in 2 groups of laryngeal tumors, glottic and supraglottic, in T-1 stage].

We studied histophatological parameters and DNA content in 27 supraglottic and 37 glottic T-1 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The DNA content was determined by the Hedley method in paraffin-embedded sections of formalin-fixed blocks in an EPICS Profile flow cytometer. We studied 14 histopathological parameters and only 3 were statistically different in both groups of tumors: Differentiation, infiltrative degree and mitoses. There weren't statistical differences in DNA content (DNA index and proliferation index).

[An analysis of the DNA content in a stage-T-1 epidermoid carcinoma of the vocal cord. The methodology and results].

DNA content of tumor cells determined by flow cytometry has been correlated to biologic behavior and to prognosis for many solid tumors, but insufficient data has been accumulated for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. In order to know the predictive value of this parameter in the prognosis of T-1 vocal cord squamous cell carcinoma, we have studied 27 patients submitted to cordectomy. The patients outcome was followed for a minimum of five years or until death, DNA content was determined by Hedley method in paraffin-embedded sections of formalin-fixed blocks in an EPICS Profile flow cytometer. 24 of these tumors were diploid (89%) and 3 aneuploid (11%). We didn't find statistical correlation between ploidy and survival, local failure or someone of the pathological parameters.

[Endogenous peroxidase activity of the laryngeal epithelium: experimental study].

Twenty vocal cords were studied. The used animals were rabbits. Beta-blockers and beta-stimulants were perfused by the jugular vein. Variations in endogenous peroxidase were observed in electron microscopy. The activity of endogenous peroxidase can be used according to our results as tracer of the autonomic innervation of the vocal cord.

[Infraorbital bone hemangioma].

Osseus hemangioma is a rare tumor. Its concept and a etiology are not well established. We preset a review and a case of this tumor located in the upper maxilla. Clinical, of this exploration and pathology are studied in this paper. Antigen in factor VIII has been observed. Considerations on different diagnosis are made.

[Nasal mucociliary function in children with recurrent infections of the airways].

Nasal mucociliary function has been studied in 21 children suffering recurrent airway infections. Previously, cystic fibrosis, immune deficits and allergy were discharged. 38 per cent of these patients had alterations in the mucociliary transport and in this group, it was observed an increase of bronchiectasis, permanent rhinorrhea and serous otitis media.
