[Detection of special radionuclides in waste water from nuclear power plants].

For the nuclear power stations in the Federal Republic of Germany, the emissions of the radionuclides C 14, P 32, Fe 55 and Ni 63 in liquid effluents were investigated for several years. For the seven nuclear power stations, for which C 14 was measured for years, the releases in liquid effluents were in the range of 1 to 67 mCi. Yearly releases of P 32 generally do not exceed 0,5 mCi. Exceptions are boiling water reactors during the first two or three years after starting operation. Yearly releases up to 30 mCi were measured. The releases of Fe 55 and Ni 63 are in the range of 1 to 20 mCi per year and thus, in general, low compared to the releases of other activated corrosion products. As a consequence of decontamination measures especially during long shut down of a facility, yearly releases up to 68 mCi of Fe 55 and 190 mCi of Ni 63 occurred. The hypothetical radiation exposure of the public, resulting from these releases is low. The dose is below 1 mrem/a.

[The value of radio-isotope investigations of the urinary tract for the diagnosis of urinary tract calculi during pregnancy (author's transl)].

According to the literature, urinary tract calculi are a rare complication of pregnancy. Because of the radiation effect of excretory urography on mother and fetus, intravenous pyelography can only rarely be used for the diagnosis of calculi in pregnancy. A sequential radio-isotope nephrogram and the simultaneous determination of the J 131 hippurate clearance equivalents were used in two pregnant patients. The cases are reported. The results are discussed and compared to reports in the literature. The exposure to radiation is about 50 mrem for radio-isotope nephrography compared to from 500 to 4000 mrem for excretory urography. Radio-isotope nephrography is therefore useful for the preliminary diagnosis of urinary tract calculi in pregnancy and the simultaneous clearance determination yields additional data on the function of the urinary tract.

[Clinical assessment of renal function in oedemas during pregnancy (author's transl)].

Oedemas during pregnancy make differential diagnosis imperative, since it will be necessary to determine whether they occur primarily in connection with pregnancy or are secondary to a pre-existent renal disease. In the studies presented here were examined women without known pre-existing renal disease, to determine the influence exercised on the parameters of renal function by the oedemas occurring during pregnancy. Examination was effected weekly by means of the previously described programme for risk pregnancies during the individual stages of pregnancy. No statistically significant influence on ureterorenal function was seen in these women compared with groups of controls. The results are discussed on the basis of facts available from literature.

[Estimation of 131I hippuran clearance during pregnancy (author's transl)].

Changes in 131I hippuran clearance were estimated by a non-catheter method, as well as total clearance and clearance of each kidney, in 43 women at various stages of pregnancy and in 13 non-pregnant women who were not using hormonal contraceptives. The results are demonstrated in graph form. The methods used are described in detail. The procedure for determining clearance in separate kidneys is indicated. It was found that clearance values increased up to the 35th and 36th weeks of pregnancy. The difference between the sides that were found corresponds with the previously known difference in the function of the right and left kidneys and ureters.

[Determination of renal function during pregnancy via renal sequence scintigraphy (author's transl)].

Following a detailed description of the technique of examination and evaluation used in nuclear medicine, the article reports on first results obtained with renal sequence scintigraphy in pregnant women with normal kidneys. Attention is drawn to the diagnostic possibilities offered by this method, basing on a discussion with reference to the published literature, with particular emphasis on pregnancy and on the monitoring of risk pregnancies.

[Studies on renal function in H-gestosis using renal sequence scintigraphy and 131-J-hippurate clearance (author's transl)].

The article comments on the results of a study conducted in 23 women with H-gestosis, in 43 gravidae of the corresponding period of gestation with healthy kidneys, as well as in a control group of 13 women with healthy kidneys, in order to determine, by means of renal sequence scintigraphy and 131-J-hippurate clearance, the change in renal function caused by H-gestosis. The clearance data are shown both globally and broken down according to the individual kidneys. Typical activity-time curves of the relevant groups under examination are also demonstrated. The results show that with mild to moderate H-gestosis, the clearance equivalents are just below the values found in pregnancy without complications, the difference not being statistically significant. In the 28th-34th week of pregnancy, the elimination phase above the right renal parenchyma "regions of interest" is enhanced in a partly statistically significant manner, compared with the corresponding control group.

[Isotope nephrographic studies during hormonal contraception using Depositon].

By means of isotope nephrograms of a total of 29 renally healthy women who had been taken for more than 1 year the drug Deposiston, the renal function is investigated. Checking is done by using the semiquantitative evaluation parameters according to Zum Winkel, Pabst and Hör and to own criteria. Our results show that the highly dosed application of estrogens does not induce significant changes of renal function in the isotope nephrogram.
