Human leptospirosis in a slum area in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil--a serological and epidemiological study.

A serologic survey was carried out on slum dwellers in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A total of 259 serum samples from male and female individuals of different age groups were tested for the presence of antileptospire antibodies by microagglutination. Prevalence data were analyzed in relation to the major risk factors present at the site, mainly represented by the presence of carrier animals and the occurrence of frequent floods. Of the samples tested, 25% reacted with antigens of different serogroups at titres ranging from 1:100 to 1:6400, with a predominance of titres less than or equal to 1:400; 35% of positive sera reacted with leptospirae of the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup. Reactions with Djasiman, Panama, Javanica, Canicola, Pyrogenes, Australis, Ballum, Sejroe, Bataviae, Grippotyphosa, Autumnalis and Cynopteri were also detected, though at lower frequencies. There was no statistically significant difference between sexes, but higher prevalence rates were found to be associated with increasing age. A focus of infection was characterized, in which social and economic factors contribute to the persistence of leptospirae by favoring the proliferation of the main reservoir.

Sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual and bisexual males from a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus negative volunteers (Project Horizonte), Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are very frequent in the whole world. Males who do not use a condom during their sexual relations are at great risk. We report cases of STD during six months of observation, among homosexual/bisexual males who participate in the Project Horizonte. There were 16 cases of genital warts, 6 cases of human immunodeficiency virus infection, 24 cases of unspecific urethritis, 28 cases of herpes simplex virus infection, 30 cases of syphilis, 58 cases of gonorrhea and 84 cases of pediculosis. We concluded that a condom must be used in all sexual relations and new counseling techniques are needed, to avoid this situation.

Serial determinations of Der p 1 and Der f 1 show predominance of one Dermatophagoides species.

One dust sample each month was collected for an average of 11 months throughout the year from the bedroom carpet of 39 mite allergic, asthmatic individuals living in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Dust samples were collected from a square meter area from the bedroom carpet for 2 min using a portable vacuum cleaner and analyzed using two-site monoclonal antibody assays. The geometric mean of Dermatophagoides allergens Der p 1 and Der f 1 levels measured in each individual home was used in the statistical analysis of the results and reflects the average allergen level per year per home. Der p 1 levels were greater than Der f 1 in 21 homes; five homes had between 1.1 and 5 times more; one home had between 5 and 10; and 15 had between 10 and 175. Der f 1 levels were greater than Der p 1 in 18 homes; seven homes had between 1.1 and 5 times more; four had between 5 and 10; and seven homes had between 10 and 44. Spearman rank analysis of the results yielded a negative correlation coefficient (Rho) = -0.213 (p = 0.19) between Der p 1 and Der f 1 levels. These data suggest that when mite allergen levels reach a geometric mean value of approximately 2 micrograms/gram of dust throughout a year, one mite species predominates over the other.
