The brains of 89 cats were investigated after the stereotactic injection of Dimer X into the ventricular system. The animals were sacrificed after 6, 24 and 48 h and after 7 and 30 days. Morphological changes were found in the ependyma, choroid plexuses, subependymal zone and in the brain tissue. They were most intense within 2 days of the experiment and some lesions (subependymal inflammatory infiltrates and ependymitis granularis) persisted up to 30 days. Similar changes were revealed postmortem in the brains of 20 patients in whom Dimer X ventriculography had been performed.
Two cases of hemangiosarcoma of the liver and spleen are described. In the first case, a great number of cavernous blood vessels has been found and this, according to the authors, may support the idea that the tumour aroses within the benign hemangioma. In the other case a thrombocytopenia, a rare complication of the liver hemangioblastoma, has been found. It should be stressed that in spite of a malignant nature of these tumours, neoplastic foci were limited only to the liver and the spleen.
In a patient after operation for metastatic bronchogenic brain abscess presence of aneurysm was demonstrated during control carotid angiography. In previous angiography the aneurysm had not been seen. During further observation the size of the aneurysm decreased. The patient died 5 weeks after the operation due to rupture of lung abscess into the pleural cavity. Microscopic examination showed that the lesion was in fact pseudoaneurysm. The authors discuss the mechanism of development of mycotic aneurysms and their possible role in the pathogenensis of metastatic brain abscesses.
Observations concerning transplantation of 5 cases of malignant dysplastic gliomas to the anterior chamber of the guinea-pig eye have been presented. This type of gliomas, composed mainly of cytoplasm-abundant cells, show weak transplantability, slow rate of growth, and particular tendency to degeneration and necrosis. At the same time, in subsequent passages, an intensive proliferation of small-cell component occurs, comparing with cytoplasm-abundant cells.
