We conducted a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy of topical interferon in the treatment of adenoviral conjunctivitis. The study was designed to determine the efficacy of plasmid-derived alpha-2 interferon treatment with regard to the duration of clinical disease, virus shedding, and the occurrence of bilateral infection and subepithelial infiltrates. Interferon therapy was not found to have a statistically significant effect with regard to these factors in the 14 patients who completed 14 days of treatment in the study with interferon or a placebo. Interferon therapy was, however, associated with a tendency toward asymptomatic infection in the second eye when compared to the controls.
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity was measured in the brains of rats subjected to repeated administration of thioacetamide (TAA), known to produce symptoms of hepatogenic encephalopathy (HE). In the early phase of the experiment, an increase of the enzyme activity was observed, which correlated well with elevated blood ammonia, while the brain ammonia remained unchanged. Prolonged TAA treatment resulted in the cessation of the activation of CA coinciding with the increase of brain ammonia above control levels. The results, in addition to supporting the idea that CA participates in ammonia detoxication in brain, may also indicate that the enhancement of the enzyme activity represents an adaptation mechanism to the increased ammonia load during HE.
A method to isolate taste buds from the foliate papillae of the rabbit tongue is described. The method comprises (a) separation of the epidermis from the dermal layer after treatment with dilute acetic acid, and (b) mechanical removal of the taste buds from the epithelium with the use of a surgical needle. The procedure yields taste buds that are morphologically well preserved, and in quantities sufficient to enable a detailed biochemical characterization. Preliminary tests have shown the taste buds to have biochemical properties clearly distinct from those of the adjacent epithelium. The method may provide a basis for studying the molecular mechanism of taste perception in greater detail.
Astroglia-enriched cell fractions derived from rats with the early symptoms of hepatogenic encephalopathy (HE) following treatment with thioacetamide, showed an increase above control ability to incorporate radioactive precursors into RNA and proteins. These results lend support to the idea that overall stimulation of macromolecular syntheses is an important aspect of astroglial reaction preceding the appearance in astrocytes of progressive morphological changes characterizing more advanced stages of HE.

In a retrospective study, 58 outpatients under long-term therapy with lithium were examined with regard to humoral autoantibodies. Fifty-five schizophrenic outpatients under neuroleptic treatment served as controls. We examined antithyroidal antibodies (TAK, MAK), smooth muscle antibodies (SMA), antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA), and antinuclear antibodies (ANA). In the lithium group there was a significant higher prevalence of antithyroidal antibodies (33%) as compared to the control group (9%). Ten patients out of 19 patients with antithyroidal antibodies showed MAK as well as TAK; moreover we found a characteristic pattern: MAK greater than or equal to TAK. All lithium-treated patients were euthyroid. Five patients out of the group with antithyroidal antibodies had goiter, three showed temporarily elevated serum concentrations of basal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). We did not find such elevated levels of TSH in the group of eight patients with goiter but without antithyroidal antibodies. There was neither a correlation between the examined parameters and the lithium serum concentration nor the additional psychotropic medication. Our results indicate a significant higher prevalence of antithyroidal antibodies under long-term therapy with lithium as compared to a psychiatric control group. We do not consider these autoimmune phenomena as relevant pathogenetic factors.
