Chromatins of four embryonic chick tissues were digested with DNAase II and the MgCl2-soluble and insoluble chromatin fractions were isolated. The MgCl2-soluble fractions displayed a high protein/DNA ratio and enrichment of nascent RNA as compared to the MgCl2-insoluble fractions. The recovery of DNA and protein in the MgC12-soluble chromatin of erythrocytes was much lower than that in the other cell types. The difference is likely to be associated with the low transcriptional activity of the erythrocyte chromatin. In polyacrylamide gels histones appeared to be the predominant protein constituent of the MgCl2-insoluble chromatins. Brain, skin and muscle displayed an apparently similar group of actively labelled nonhistones at 70 000 to 100 000 daltons. These nonhistones were not observed in erythrocytes. The MgCl2-soluble chromatins of erythrocytes, brain, skin and muscle had a prominent group of polypeptides at approx. 40 000 daltons. In all tissues except for erythrocytes the group of proteins was actively labelled. These polypeptides are suggested to be the major structural protein constituent of the MgCl-soluble chromatin.
Electrocardiograms before and during lithium treatment were evaluated. In both 12 healthy volunteers who were given lithium for 7 days as well as in 20 out-patients, who had received lithium treatment for many years similar results were found: 1. Disturbances of the cardiac rhythm or heart failure did not occur. 2. Unspecific variations of the repolarisation were indicated in 75% of the long-term patients and 50% of the healthy volunteers during lithium treatment; these changes were dose-related. 3. The potassium concentrations in the serum remained within normal limits and showed no significant variations. 4. During therapy the long-term patients experienced a significant drop in the pulse-rate. This effect was apparently not dose-related, byt seemed to be conditioned by an incipient tachycardia caused by an additional psychotropic medication administered before the lithium application. In the healthy volunteers the pulse-rate remained stable during the experiment. These results are discussed in the context of the current literature of the subject.

In 34 out-patients Li+- and K+-concentrations were determined in plasma and RBC during 15 months of clinical routine observations. Average frequency of check-ups was 9/patient. Psychopathological state and side effects were documented by the AMP-system. The mean intra-extracellular lithium concentration ratio (LiQ) was 34%. The ratio and the absolute lithium RBC concentration showed a wide intraindividual variability between 5 and 53%. Patients under 50 years old had the same absolute concentration values as the older ones but required a 50% higher average dose. Side effects such as tremor and thirst correlated well the intra-extracellular ratio. No difference was found between unipolar and bipolar depressions. LiQ was slightly reduced and KQ increased in patients with severe relapses or additional psychotropic medication.
The dynamics of changes in the in vivo amino acid incorporation into proteins of the neuron and glia cell enriched fractions of rat brain following application of a number of hypoxic conditions were investigated. The experimental models include: a) simple hypoxia, b) ischemic-hypoxic hypoxia and c) carbon monoxide intoxication. Irrespective of the experimental model used, neuronal protein synthesis was more markedly inhibited than glial, maximal inhibition being observed 2 hrs after cessation of the experimental procedure. The changes were of transient character, whereby 24 hrs after the experiment the glial synthesis appeared activated above the control value. The higher sensitivity of the neuronal protein synthesis to the applied experimental procedures produced more significant changes of the protein/total radioactivity ratio in neurons than in glia, the ratio expressing the extent of radioactive amino acid utilisation in the synthesis.
