[Morphological characteristics of the stroma of thyroid cancer].

The stroma of the papillary and follicular thyroid carcinoma was studied histochemically, morphometrically and electron microscopically. The functionally active vascular bed was found to have a greater length in the papillary carcinoma as compared to the follicular one. Likewise the cell infiltration and the number of fibroblasts with a high dehydrogenase activity were more pronounced in the papillary carcinoma. It is believed that these properties of the stroma are connected with the function of parenchymatous carcinoma cells.

[Dispensarization of patients with podagra and renal lesions].

Altogether 100 patients with associated podagra and renal injury were examined and treated. Before the first admission to the clinic only 5% of the patients had received combined therapy of renal pathology on a regular basis, 33% of the patients had been given pathogenetic but not systematic therapy. 66% of the patients had not responded to the treatment, whereas 38% manifested a decrease in renal function. Sixty patients were followed up for the results of further dispensary observation during 1.5 to 5 years. These patients were distributed into 2 groups. The first one comprised 26 patients who adhered strictly to the physicians' recommendations, the second group consisted of patients who received treatment irregularly. The clinicolaboratory improvement was attained in almost 3/4 of the first group patients and in less than 1/4 of the second group patients. The best effect was attained in the treatment of the urolithiasis pattern of nephropathy, whereas the less marked in chronic interstitial nephritis. The worst results were attained in patients with glomerulonephritis.

[Common patterns of the local immune reactions in precancer and cancer of various organs].

Histochemical, morphological and ultrastructural studies of 208 cases of carcinoma of various organs (stomach, colon, lung, mammary gland, bladder, thyroid) and 159 cases of precancerous or risk disease of these organs are given. The degree and properties of local immune reactions in precancer, incipient and advanced carcinoma are compared. The degree of the epithelium and stroma infiltration with the immunocompetent cells as well as the cell composition of the infiltrate vary at different stages of tumour development and depending on its histological structure. Cytotoxic effect of the immunocompetent cells on the tumour cells is revealed, this effect decreasing in advanced carcinoma.

[Dynamics of the cellular immune reactions in precancer and cancer of the large intestine].

Ninety cases of colon precancer and cancer were examined histologically, histochemically and morphometrically from the viewpoint of cell immune reactions of local connective tissue and regional lymph nodes. It is found that the intensity of mutual cell responses of local connective tissue, colon lymph follicles and regional lymph nodes increases in parallel with the malignization of adenomatous polyps and villous adenomata, reaches a peak in the incipient carcinoma and rapidly decreases when the invasive growth starts. The correlation between the plasma cells and lymphoid cells changes, the relative density of the latter is the greatest in the incipient carcinoma. The data obtained may be used for the incipient carcinoma diagnosis and for prognosis.

[Morphology of stromal macrophages in breast cancer].

Electron microscopic study of the stroma of mammary gland carcinoma of 12 patients before and after treatment by regional intraarterial chemotherapy allowed 4 types of macrophages to be distinguished. Macrophages of 3 types (2nd, 3rd, 4th) in the state of activation take part in elimination of the tumor cells. The mechanisms of macrophage-tumor cell interactions vary: macrophages of the 2nd and 3rd type lyse tumor cells by contact, while those of the 4th type by phagocytosis and cleavage of tumor cells by processes.

[Oxidoreductase activity in the cells of stomach cancer].

NAD- and NADP-dependent dehydrogenases in gastric adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated cancer cells were studied comparatively. The activity of NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was found to be high in gastric adenocarcinoma, while there was noted a more high activity of succinate dehydrogenase and NAD-dependent malate dehydrogenase in undifferentiated cancer. Differences ni the activity of oxido-reductive enzymes in adrenocarcinoma and undifferentiated cancer are discussed from the standpoint of various histogenesis of these forms of gastric cancer.

[Degree of maturity and histogenesis of stomach cancer and their importance for prognosis].

The intensity of differentiation of adenocarcinoma and non-differentiated cancer cells was studied histochemically and electron microscopically. A higher ratio of nucleus volume to cytoplasm volume and nucleus nuclei acids to cytoplasm RNA, low secretory activity in adenocarcinoma cells as compared to nondifferentiated cancers were found. Adenocarcinomas were shown to have a higher activity of NADP-dependent dehydrogenases, more numerous free ribosomes as compared to nondifferentiated carcinoma. This suggests a lower degree of cell differentiation and high proliferative activity in adenocarcinomas than in nondifferentiated carcinoma. Differences in the intensity of cell and tissue differentiation in adenocarcinomas and nondifferentiated carcinoma and due to differences in their histogenesis and must be taken into account in evaluations of the prognosis.

[Precancerous changes and the histogenesis of stomach cancer].

142 cases of gastric cancer, 20 cases of chronic ulcer, 800 gastrobiopsies, performed for chronic gastritis, were studied morphologically. Adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated gastric cancer were found to have different precancerous lesions in the background. It was shown that among undifferentiated cancers the signs of chronic ulcer preceding cancer are noted more frequently than among adenocarcinomas. Grave forms of atrophic gastritis and gastritis of the mucous membrane regeneration beyond the tumor were revealed more frequently in adenocarcinomas than in undifferentiated cancers. These precancerous affections were found to be associated with the proliferation of different cell elements of gastric mucous membrane, that conditions various listogenesis of basic histological forms of cancer of the stomach. The proliferation of the lining-gastric pit epithelium, mainly observed in gastritis, results in the appearance of adenocarcinomas. The proliferation of the glandular epithelium, particularly that of glandular ducts in ulcerous disease would condition the development of undifferentiated forms of gastric cancer.

[Quantitative assessment of the degree of stomach cancer cell morphologic dedifferentiation].

Quantitative estimation of the nucleic acids content in the preparations stained with gallocianine-chromic alum was made in 20 cases of stomach cancer. Coefficients of the ratio of the nucleus section surface and the cytoplasm, the ratio of DNA + RNA of the nucleus to RNA of the cytoplasm, and of DNA of the nucleus to the sum total quantity of RNA in the nucleus and the cytoplasm, the index of DNA accumulation were compared in adenocarcinomas (210 cells) and undifferentiated cancers (390 cells) of the stomach. The ratio of the nucleus surface and the cytoplasm, DNA + RNA of the nucleus to RNA of the cytoplasm was higher (statistically significant value) in adenocarcinomas as compared with undifferentiated cancers of the stomach. This allows to suggest a lower differentiation of adenocarcinoma cells in comparison with tumour cells of undifferentiated forms of stomach cancer.

[Histogenesis and morphological characteristics of stomach cancer].

Histological and histochemical studies of stomach cancer and comparisons of characteristics of highly differentiated adenocarcinoma (24 observations) and nondifferentiated cancer (51 observations) revealed no differences in the character of the secret and in the activity of alkaline phosphatase in tumoral cells of glandular and nondifferentiated cancer. At the same time different localization of primary cancer was established: nondifferentiated cancer--in the region of glandular necks and basal parts of the mucosa, adenocarcinomas--in the surface regions. Comparison of the data obtained with features of physiological regeneration of the epithelium of the gastric mucosa justifies the assumption that foveate epithelium of nondifferentiated cancer, epithelium of the glandular neck, was the source of origination of adenocarcinoma. A different histogenesis of adenocarcinoma and nondifferentiated cancer accounts for their morphological differences and characteristics of the clinical course.
