[Aortic valve stenosis with calcification].

A group of 52 patients was studied with a view to defining the characteristic features of aortic valve stenosis with calcification. There is no uniform aetiopathogenesis to explain the condition. 3 basic types could be distinguished--post-rheumatic, senile, and due to congenital malformation of the valve; all were represented about equally.

Serum levels of 8-methoxypsoralen 2 hours after oral administration.

Serum levels of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) were determined 2 hours after oral administration and found to vary considerably among psoriatic patients. There was no definite correlation between the 8-MOP serum level, the dose of 8-MOP/kg body weight ingested, and the minimal phototoxic UVA dose.

[Cardiomyopathies].

Cardiomyopathies have been characterized as diseases of the heart muscle of unknown cause. The dilated type [idiopathic cardiomegaly] cannot be regarded as a separate entity, but a uniform final result of myocardial damage due to various factors. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [asymmetrical hypertrophy of septum] probably represents a genetically conditioned disease with characteristic clinical and pathological features.

[Aneurysms of the fossae ovalis].

A series of 8 patients serve to demonstrate an ill-recognized entity, viz. the aneurysm of the oval fossa. The factors primarily responsible for the development of the aneurysm include a connective-tissue disturbance in the interatrial septum and an alteration of the pressure ratio between the atria. The possible clinical significance has been stressed.

Calcific coronary embolization associated with cardiac valve replacement. Necropsy x-ray study.

The hearts of 14 patients dying early after replacement of a calcified aortic or mitral valve were examined for the presence of calcific coronary emboli. The incidence of embolization as shown by x-ray film was 92-9 per cent. The number of emboli in individual cases ranged from 4 to 119. Replacement of an aortic valve was associated with a more severe embolization than replacement of a mitral valve. Th mechanisms of calcific embolization are discussed and preventive surgical measures suggested.
