A study was carried out between 1993-1994 to determine the prevalence and intensity of intestinal helminth infections among 217 primary school children in Relliveedhi, a slum area in Visakhapatnam. The children were between 7 to 13 years of age and belonged to lower socio-economic status. Stool samples collected were processed by modified formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique to determine ova counts (EPG). One hundred and seventy seven children were infected with one or more of the intestinal parasites viz. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm. The overall prevalence of infection was eighty two per cent. Ascaris lumbricoides was the most common infection with a prevalence of 75% followed by T. trichiura (66%) and hookworm (9%). All infected children received a single dose of albendazole (400 mg/child). Single stool samples were examined over a period of nine months to study reinfection dynamics.
C-reactive proteins (CRP) have been affinity purified to electrophoretic homogeneity from the sera of major carp, Catla catla before and after exposure to environmental pollutants. Exposure to these pollutants elevate the levels of circulating CRPs to 2.8-3.5 times the normal values. Kinetic studies of metal intoxication indicate that a unique molecular variant of CRP is present in the serum at the peak level of acute phase induction, and this variant coexists with normal CRPs. Carbohydrate analysis and lectin binding reveals that these CRPs are glycoproteins differing significantly in total carbohydrate contents. Their electrophoretic mobilities in native gel are different but become identical on desialylation and deglycosylation implying that the molecular variants vary in the glycan parts. All these forms of CRP contain two nonidentical subunits of Mr 22 and 29 kDa. Examination of their immunological crossreactivity demonstrate their similarity in overall molecular topology but their differences in the quantitative extent of binding are reflected.
The uptake of [3H] leucine, [3H] thymidine, [14C] acetate, and [14C] mevalonic acid by aortic intima media from normal rabbits and from rabbits subjected to a single balloon de-endothelialization as measured 6 days, 2 months, and 4 months after treatment to determine how long the injury-induced stimulation of incorporation of these precursors into tissue components persisted beyond 6 days, the time of maximum proliferative response of the smooth muscle cells. We found that [3H] thymidine incorporation (indicative of DNA synthesis and the potential for cell proliferation) was about three times greater in the de-endothelialized tissue than in the control tissue 6 days after vessel injury, but that by 2 months it was normal. Labeled leucine incorporation into the de-endothelialized tissue (a measure of protein synthesis) was eight times higher than normal at the time of maximum proliferative response to injury (6 days), and showed no decrease under identical incubation conditions in ballooned tissue obtained 2 months after de-endothelialization; it continued high at 4 months. Both [14C] acetate and [14C] mevalonate uptake into lipids by the aortic tissue were enhanced by the injury; this increased incorporation was still evident at 4 months. Thus, de-endothelialization of the aorta triggers a vessel wall response characterized by augmented protein synthesis and lipogenesis, which persists at least 4 months after injury and at least 2 months after DNA synthesis has normalized.
Scanning electron microscope examination of the polyethylene components of 8 total hip and 16 total knee prostheses which had been implanted 4--96 months revealed that in many cases severe wear may not necessarily be caused by the presence of acrylic cement debris or other abrasives. The craters and cracks observed on severely worn surfaces are associated with fusion defects in the plastic itself. The fusion defects were seen to occur as a result of the low temperature necessary to mold ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene and are (at least at present) difficult to avoid. As a consequence of the above and variability of molecular weight in this material, relatively wide variations in wear rate should be expected even in the absence of acrylic debris.
