Promoting transcultural care in a college of health care studies.

This article describes the steps taken by the North London College of Health Studies to facilitate the development and delivery of culturally sensitive courses. It suggests that transcultural education for transcultural care can only truly be achieved if the organisational ethos, the epistemology which underpins the curriculum and the way that this is structured and taught, articulate together into a cohesive framework to enable the rhetoric to become reality.

Curriculum↗

Learning from colleagues of different cultures.

Much can be learned about transcultural care from nursing colleagues who belong to minority ethnic groups. If they are willing and adequately empowered these nurses can become effective role models for their colleagues.

Ethnicity↗

Transcultural competence: the challenge for nurse education.

Several recent health policy directives highlight the need to overcome the health disadvantage and discrimination experienced by many members of minority ethnic communities. However, there is ample evidence to indicate that nurses frequently fall short of providing sensitive and appropriate care to minority ethnic patients. If these policy objectives are to be met, it is essential that nurse education provides students with the opportunity to develop transcultural competence. This article examines the current policy context before considering the principles underpinning the development of transcultural competence. It concludes by discussing how nurse education might more effectively prepare nurses to meet the needs of minority ethnic communities.

Establishing an in-house journal.

Articles in journals such as Nursing Standard offer nurses a valuable means to keep their knowledge updated, but how many people do you know who have written an article? The majority of research undertaken by nurses remains unpublished (Humphris 1999), so much potentially useful experience, knowledge, ideas and research are lost. This article describes how the School of Health, Biological and Environmental Sciences (HeBES) at Middlesex University established an in-house journal to encourage nurses to develop their skills of writing for publication.

[What determines indications for surgery in over-90-year-old urologic patients?].

Whereas up to a few decades ago operations were performed in aged patients only for vital indications, today elective operations that aim at improving the quality of life are predominant. Urology in particular must deal with diseases that appear preferentially in older age groups. In our department of urology we have operated on 52 patients over 90 years of age in the past 10 years. The vast majority of patients had accompanying disorders, and in half of the patients their general condition was reduced or even poor at admission. Postoperatively there was only one cardiac death. All other patients were discharged in a satisfactory condition.
