The natural resistance of F1 hybrid mice against parental bone marrow grafts is thought to be mediated by natural killer (NK)-like effector cells. However, unlike the NK cell activity against a wide range of tumors and normal cells, hybrid resistance is characterized by the immunogenetic specificity controlled by a set of unique noncodominant genes denoted as Hh. Two alternative hypotheses can account for the specificity. Thus, the specificity may reflect either the Hh restriction of effectors or the Hh gene control of mechanisms regulating non-Hh-restricted effector activity. In this study, therefore, we tested the recognition specificity of putative effectors mediating hybrid resistance in lethally irradiated H-2b/d and H-2b/k F1 hybrid mice to the engraftment of parental H-2b bone marrow. As a direct means of defining the effector specificity, rejection of parental bone marrow grafts was subjected to competitive inhibition in situ by irradiated tumor cells. Of the 16 independent lines of lymphoma and other hemopoietic tumor cells tested, the ability to inhibit hybrid resistance was the exclusive property of all tumors derived from mice homozygous for the H-2Db region, regardless of whether the tumor cells were susceptible or resistant to NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity in vitro. Four cell lines heterozygous for the H-2Db were noninhibitory, including one that is susceptible to natural killing. Pretreatment of the F1 hosts with an interferon inducer augmented the resistance with no alteration in the recognition specificity of effector cells. Therefore, natural resistance to parental H-2b bone marrow grafts was mediated by effectors restricted by the H-2Db/Hh-1b gene(s), and not by the nonrestricted NK cells detectable in conventional in vitro assays.

Old-age twinning rates were evaluated over a period of 250 years (1611-1860), from 80,256 parish records of baptism in a church office in Görlitz, East Germany. Two periods with high and two periods with low twinning rates were observed. Twinning rates were relatively stable in spring and fall, but varied greatly in winter and summer.
Records of two hospitals and of an association of mothers of twins were analysed for the years 1924-1980, finding a total of 656,109 and 1185 twin births, respectively. Twinning rates were higher in summer or fall, in general, but these seasonal variations occasionally changed within a short period of years, as in 1973-75 in the Association group. The twinning rate was also affected by the month of mother's birth. It was low among the mothers born around May-July in maternities up to 1960, and these mothers did not show seasonal variation of twin births. The unlike-sexed twinning rate of the mothers born in May-July was also lower than that of the other mothers, and constantly low even at higher maternal ages. A possible explanation for these phenomena is discussed.

Clinical studies on cefmenoxime (CMX) concentration in prostatic tissue and bladder wall were made and the following results were obtained. In 40 patients undergoing operation, 1 g of CMX was administered intravenously by bolus technique and CMX levels in peripheral blood, prostatic tissue and bladder wall were examined. The maximum level of prostatic tissue was 35 micrograms/g after 0.41 hour and bladder wall was 62 micrograms/g after 0.37 hour, and T1/2 was 1.41 hours both. CMX, a new broad spectrum cephalosporin, can be considered as one of the highly useful antibiotics for the treatment of postoperative infection.
Two "gain and loss" type mutations of the H-2D region, the H- 2bm13 and H- 2bm14 , resulted in the expression of noncross-reactive CML determinants that are unique to each mutation, the Dbm13 gains and Dbm14 gains, respectively. According to the results of direct cytolytic and competitive inhibition assays of in vitro induced primary cytotoxic T lymphocytes, allogeneic responses specific for Dbm13 gains are generated by responders bearing the H-2b ( KbIbDb ) haplotype, but not by responders bearing the H- 2bm14 ( KbIbDbm14 ), KbIbDd , KbIbDk , or KbIb / qDq haplotype. Responses by the non-H-2b responders against Dbm13 are limited to those determinants shared by the Dbm13 and Db molecules. Because congenic mice differing only at the H-2D region are either responsive or nonresponsive to Dbm13 gains, the responsiveness is controlled by gene(s) in the H-2D region. F1 hybrid offspring of responsive (H-2b) and nonresponsive (non-H-2b) parents are invariably responsive, indicating genetic dominance of the responsiveness. In contrast to the response against Dbm13 gains, cytotoxicity specific for Dbm14 gains is generated by responders bearing the H-2b, H- 2bm13 , KbIbDd , KbIbDk , or KbIb / qDq haplotype. These data indicate the existence of two types of allogeneic MHC determinants; one, represented by Dbm14 gains, is the classic type capable of eliciting CML responses in mice of a wide range of H-2 haplotypes, whereas the other, exemplified by Dbm13 gains, elicits CTL responses only in mice of a few related haplotypes. It is proposed that recognition of Dbm13 gains is restricted by structures shared by Db and Dbm13 but missing from other D (or L, R, etc.) molecules, such as Dbm14 , Dd, Dk, and Dq. Availability of various restricting structures in self MHC molecules may thus influence the alloreactive CTL repertoire.
The effects of beryllium on cultured cells were investigated. Three cell-lines (HeLa-S3, Vero, HEL-R66) were used in these experiments and they were cultured in Eagle's MEM plus 5 or 10% FBS (Fetal Bovine Serum) containing beryllium in various concentrations. HeLa cells or Vero cells were able to grow in the medium with 10 micrograms Be/ml (1.1 mM). On the other hand, the growth of HEL cells were strongly inhibited, even when cultured in the medium with 1 microgram Be/ml (1.1 X 10(-1) mM) and the number of living cells showed markedly low level as compared to that of the control samples cultured in the medium without beryllium. The cytotoxic effects of beryllium on these cells, which were cultured for three days in the medium with beryllium, were observed. None of cytotoxic effects were found on HeLa cells cultured with 0.5 micrograms/ml (5.5 X 10(-2) mM) and on Vero cells cultured with 0.05 micrograms Be/ml (5.5 X 10(-3) mM), while HEL cells received cytotoxic effects even when cultured in the medium containing 0.05 micrograms Be/ml (5.5 X 10(-3) mM), and these effects on the cells appeared strong when cultured in the medium without FBS. It was revealed from these experiments that HEL cells are very sensitive in terms of toxic effects of beryllium. Therefore, there cells can be used for the toxicological study on low level concentrations of the metal.

Genetic and antigenic characterisation was performed on a strain of adenovirus (EAd) isolated from an outbreak of gastroenteritis which occurred in an orphanage in the City of Sapporo, in the room housing the eldest children, who ranged in age from 14 to 22 months. 7 of the 11 children housed in that room had diarrhoea between July 11 and July 22, 1982. All 7 shed adenoviruses detectable by electron microscopy in their stools. Immune electron microscopy showed that all patients as well as the healthy contacts sharing the room underwent seroconversion to EAd. There was no homology, or very slight homology, between DNA of EAd and those of adenoviruses belonging to subgroups A to E. Antigenically EAd was closely related to type 40 adenovirus, so far the sole member of the newly identified subgroup F. This outbreak of gastroenteritis is the first in which the causative agent has been identified as being a member of subgroup F adenoviruses.
Administration of a single dose of C. parvum (CP) induces depression of splenic NK activity in mice after a lag period of 3-5 days and this depression lasts about 2 weeks. The depressed levels of NK activity noted in this study depended on time of CP administration and were associated with the induction of suppressor cell activity. Neonatally thymectomized or sublethally irradiated mice had unimpaired ability to generate suppressor cells following CP treatment. Depletion of adherent/phagocytic cells by carbonyl iron plus magnetism, Sephadex G-10 filtration, or both neither enriched NK activity nor removed suppressor activity from the spleens of CP-treated mice. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) against lymphoma targets was also depressed in CP-treated mice, accompanied by a concomitant appearance of suppressor cells that interfere with ADCC at the effector level.
A special cell type was identified in the mucosal epithelium of the large intestine of the tadpole of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. It is a slender, columnar cell, with a dark, basally situated nucleus. By electron microscopy the cell displays prominent bundles of filaments emerging from each microvillus and extending deep into the cytoplasm without ending in the terminal web. It has longer and more crowded microvilli than the absorptive cell. The specialized cell is also characterized by the presence of many apical vesicles and numerous subapical dense bodies. These cytological features suggest that it may be a brush cell (Rhodin and Dalhamn 1956). These cells displayed endogenous peroxidase activity in smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, in the well-developed Golgi apparatus and in apical vesicles. Furthermore, peroxidase reaction product was frequently observed on their luminal surface membrane. These findings suggest that the brush cell in the large intestine of the bullfrog tadpole may be a secretory cell.
