Bone trabecular pattern analysis in Down syndrome with the use of computed panoramic radiography. Part II: Visual pattern analysis with the frequency and gradational enhancement.

Visual pattern analysis of mandibular bone trabeculation of 51 patients with Down syndrome and 78 normal persons was performed by using rotational panoramic radiography with a laser scan system. The findings for patients with Down syndrome were consistent with geromorphism, one of the somatic characteristics of Down syndrome.

Adolescent

Diagnostic imaging of diseases affecting the mandible with the use of computed panoramic radiography.

Computed panoramic radiography was performed on patients with bone cyst, osteomyelitis, gingival cancer, and fibrous dysplasia, respectively, to determine the best imaging procedure for disease processes affecting the mandible. Gradational enhancement images for detection of density changes and frequency enhancement images for detecting changes in the margin and texture were effective in aiding the diagnosis of diseases of the mandible with the use of computed panoramic radiography.

Bone Resorption

Computed cephalography using laser scan system.

A new imaging system with applications in dentistry has been developed which uses recent advances in both electronic and computer technology. The cephalometric radiogram is based on a newly developed laser scan system offering these characteristic features: 1. A clearer image with a wide latitude can now be obtained compared with the cephalometric radiograms taken by the conventional method. 2. Various imaging processes are available through computer enhancement which enable visualization of the sites of dense and thin bones and even the anatomical morphology of the soft tissues. Such images could be easily observed regardless of the purpose of the radiogram. 3. Data are reduced by conversion into digital signals which can be stored in the computer for long periods. 4. Exposure dose is reduced.

Cephalometry

Bone trabecular pattern analysis in Down's syndrome with the use of computed panoramic tomography with a laser scan system. Quantitative analysis with the power spectrum method.

A quantitative analysis of the mandibular bone trabeculae of 44 patients with Down's syndrome and 68 normal persons by means of panoramic tomography was performed with a laser scan system. The results showed that the normal persons exhibited a correlation between the trabecular pattern and aging, whereas the patients with Down's syndrome showed no such correlation. These findings were consistent with geromorphism, which is one of the systemic features of Down's syndrome.

Computed panoramic tomography with scanning laser-stimulated luminescence.

A new imaging system for the dental field that combines recent advances in both the electronics and computer technologies was developed. It is a panoramic tomography process based on the newly developed laser-scan system and an imaging system featuring (1) clear images with abundant diagnostic information and wide latitude; (2) the possibility of new diagnostic methods through image-information processing; and (3) reduction of exposure to a minimum.

Gallium-67 scanning in the evaluation of therapy of malignant tumors of the head and neck.

Gallium-67 scintigraphy was performed on 25 patients with a variety of malignant tumors of the head and neck in order to evaluate the susceptibility of the tumors to irradiation and chemotherapy before treatment and to monitor the effectiveness of therapy. If certain limitations are borne in mind, gallium scanning may prove a valuable tool in planning and evaluating therapy of malignant tumors.
