Leg lengthening in achondroplastic children.

Bilateral simultaneous elongation of the lower limbs was performed in 3 achondroplastic children. A total of 10 bones were elongated with Wagner's distraction apparatus, mainly by a modified Wagner technique. Maximal elongation of 34 to 44% of the original bone length resulted in relatively minor complications. Elongation of the lower limbs in achondroplastic children improves trunk-to-lower-limb proportions.

Dorsal silicone rods in the primary care of war injuries.

During armed combat serious hand injuries are often neglected only to receive the attention they deserve far too late. The authors have employed a vigorous approach to the primary care of severe war injuries to dorsum of the hand introducing silicone rods where extensor tendons have been destroyed and where skin closure is obtained using inguinal skin flaps.

Use of surgical laser in the removal of an osteoma of the skull.

The laser beam can be adapted for use as a surgical cutting instrument. It was chosen for this purpose in the extirpation of an osteoma of the skull. Its removal by conventional means was believed to be too dangerous, because of surrounding vascularity. The nature and properties of the beam and its surgical applications are discussed briefly.

Normal foot--ground pressure pattern in children.

A modern measuring aid for recording foot--ground pressure (FGP) distribution was used to establish normal patterns in male and female children aged 4 to 6 years. Computer analysis demonstrated the pressure exerted by each part of the foot. Standing at ease, the child with a normal foot exerts most of his ground pressure by the posterior weight-bearing area (WBA). The rest is distributed between the middle and anterior WBAs, with the middle portion exerting no more than 10% of the total foot--ground pressure. The advantage of this measuring system is that once a normal FGP has been established, it can serve as an important diagnostic aid and an accurate guide for deciding on appropriate conservative or surgical treatment of the feet of young children.
