Investigation of a putative mobius aromatic hydrocarbon. The effect of benzannelation on mobius [4n]annulene aromaticity.

The first experimental example of a [4n]annulene derivative with one Mobius twist, 1, was synthesized recently [Ajami, D.; Oeckler, O.; Simon, A.; Herges, R. Nature 2003, 426, 819] and was purported to possess aromatic character. However, critical analysis of the published crystallographic data indicates that the Mobius [16]annulene core of 1 shows large bond alternation (Deltar up to 0.157 A). Delocalization in this core is inhibited by large dihedral angles, which hinders effective pi overlap. This conclusion is supported by computational results (B3LYP/6-311+G) on 1 and several less benzannelated derivatives, based on geometric (Deltar, Deltar(m), Julg A, HOMA) and magnetic (NICS, magnetic susceptibility exaltation) criteria of aromaticity. That benzannelation results in bond localization in the [16]annulene core is shown by additional computations on benzannelated derivatives of other Mobius aromatic species. Additionally, the aromatic stabilization energy (ASE) of 1 has been reinvestigated using two different procedures. Evaluation of uncorrected ISE(II) values of just the polyene bridge portion of 1 and its Huckel counterpart suggests that stabilization of 1 relative to its Huckel isomer is confined to the polyene bridge and is not due to a delocalized pi circuit. Furthermore, application of s-cis/s-trans corrections lowers the ISE(II) value of 1 from 4.0 kcal/mol to 0.6 kcal/mol, suggesting that 1 is nonaromatic.

Structures and energies of isolobal (BCO)n and (CH)n cages.

The structures and energies of isolobal (CH)n and (BCO)n polyhedral species, computed at the B3LYP density functional theory level, reveal contrasts in behavior. The strain energies of the (BCO)n cages are much smaller. Also unlike the (CH)n cages, the most stable (BCO)n polyhedra (n > or = 10) prefer structures with the largest number of three-membered rings. The planar (or nearly planar) faces of the cage systems were modeled by computations on planar, isoelectronic (CH2)n (Dnh) and (HBCO)n (Cnv) rings. While the strain energies of all the planar carbon rings, relative to the most stable D5h (CH2)5, were large, the strain energies of all the planar (HBCO)n (Cnv) rings were small. Remarkably, the three-membered (HBCO)3 (C3v) ring was the most stable. Finally, large (BCO)n systems prefer tubelike rather than cage structures.

Hydroformylation and isomerization of allene and propyne: a density functional theory study.

The [HCo(CO)3]-catalyzed hydroformylation of allene and propyne has been investigated at the B3LYP level of density functional theory. It is found that hydroformylation of allene favors the linear anti-Markovnikov product in high regioselectivity both kinetically and thermodynamically. The origin of this regioselectivity comes from the enhanced stability of the eta3-allylic intermediate [(eta3-CH2CHCH2)Co(CO)3]. By contrast, propyne does not show any regioselectivity. The possible interconversion between allene and propyne mediated by [HCo(CO)3] has been explored.

An industrially viable catalyst system for palladium-catalyzed telomerizations of 1,3-butadiene with alcohols.

The telomerization reaction of 1,3-butadiene with alcohols to give alkyl octadienyl ethers in the presence of palladium-carbene catalysts has been studied in detail. Unprecedented catalyst efficiency with turnover numbers (TON) up to 1,500,000 and turnover frequencies (TOF) up to 100,000 h(-1) have been obtained after optimization for the reaction of methanol in the presence of an excess of in situ generated carbene ligands. High yields (75-97 %) and catalyst productivities (TON 15,000-100,000) are observed for other aliphatic alcohols and phenols. For comparison five carbene-palladium(0) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both electronic and steric effects on the stability and reactivity of the catalysts have been discussed on the basis of density functional theory calculations.

Catalytic Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov functionalization of alkenes and alkynes: recent developments and trends.

The regioselective functionalization of terminal alkenes and alkynes is of utmost importance for the synthesis of a wide variety of organic products. Based on the original observation by Vladimir Markovnikov-the pioneer of this field of research-in the 19th century, the possible regioisomeric products are classified as Markovnikov or anti-Markovnikov products. Contrary to traditional belief, it is nowadays possible to control the regiochemistry of various additions of nucleophiles to alkenes and alkynes by applying different transition-metal catalysts. Recent developments in this area of selective functionalization of alkenes and alkynes are reviewed.

A general study of [(eta5-Cp')2Ti(eta2-Me3SiC2SiMe3)]-catalyzed hydroamination of terminal alkynes: regioselective formation of Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov products and mechanistic explanation (Cp'=C5H5, C5H4Et, C5Me5).

A general study of the regioselective hydroamination of terminal alkynes in the presence of [(eta5-Cp)2Ti(eta2-Me3SiC2SiMe3)] (1), [(eta5-CpEt)2Ti(eta2-Me3SiC2SiMe3)] (CpEt=ethylcyclopentadienyl) (2), and [(eta5-Cp*)2Ti(eta2-Me3SiC2SiMe3)] (Cp*=pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) (3) is presented. While aliphatic amines give mainly the anti-Markovnikov products, anilines and aryl hydrazines yield the Markovnikov isomer as main products. Interestingly, using aliphatic amines such as n-butylamine and benzylamine the different catalysts lead to a significant change in the observed regioselectivity. Here, for the first time a highly selective switch from the Markovnikov to the anti-Markovnikov product is observed simply by changing the catalyst. Detailed theoretical calculations for the reaction of propyne with different substituted anilines and tert-butylamine in the presence of [(eta5-C5H5)Ti(=NR)(NHR)] (R=4-C6H4X; X=H, F, Cl, CH3, 2,6-dimethylphenyl) reveal that the experimentally observed regioselectivity is determined by the relative stability of the corresponding pi-complexes 10. While electrostatic stabilization favors the Markovnikov performance for aniline, the steric repulsive destabilization disfavors the Markovnikov performance for tert-butylamine.

Hyperconjugation effect in substituted methyl boranes: an orbital deletion procedure analysis.

The hyperconjugation effect in the substituted methyl boranes, XCH(2)BH(2) (X = H, CH(3), NH(2), PH(2), OH, SH, F, Cl, Br), has been quantitatively evaluated by using the orbital deletion procedure (ODP), where the p(pi) orbital on boron is deactivated. Except for the case of X = NH(2), which forms a three-membered ring, the magnitude of the hyperconjugative stabilization in all other substituted methylborane ranges from 6.8 to 3.4 kcal/mol. Significant structural changes are observed, particularly the shortening of the central B-C bond distance and the reducing of the corresponding XCB and HCB bond angles. In general, the strength of the hyperconjugative interaction between the occupied sigma(C-X) bond and the vacant p(pi) orbital on boron is correlated to the electronegativity of X, and the competition between the donation ability of the sigma(C-X) and the sigma(C-H) bonds determines the preference of the staggered or eclipsed structure as the energy minimum state. When the donation abilities of the C-X and C-H bonds are comparable, other factors such as electron correlation and steric effect may play elaborate roles in the geometrical propensity of the most stable structures.

Synthesis and characterization of hypoelectronic rhenaboranes. Analysis of the geometric and electronic structures of species following neither borane nor metal cluster electron-counting paradigms.

The reaction of (CpReH(2))(2)B(4)H(4) with monoborane leads to the sequential formation of (CpRe)(2)B(n)()H(n)() (n = 7-10, 1-4). These species adopt closed deltahedra with the same total connectivities as the closo-borane anions [B(n)()H(n)()](2)(-), n = 9-12, but with flattened geometries rather than spherical shapes. These rhenaborane clusters are characterized by high metal coordination numbers, Re-Re cross-cluster distances within the Re-Re single bond range, and formal cluster electron counts three skeletal electron pairs short of that required for a canonical closo-structure of the same nuclearity. An open cluster, (CpReH)(2)B(7)H(9) (5), is isolated that bears the same structural relationship to arachno-B(9)H(15) as 1-4 bear to the closo-borane anions. Chloroborane permits the isolation of (CpReH)(2)B(5)Cl(5) (6), an isoelectronic chloro-analogue of known open (CpWH(2))(2)B(5)H(5) and (CpRe)(2)B(6)H(4)Cl(2) (7), a triple-decker complex containing a planar, six-membered 1,2-B(6)H(4)Cl(2) ring. Both are putative five- and six-boron intermediates in the formation of 1. Electronic structure calculations (extended Hückel and density functional theory) yield geometries in agreement with the structure determinations, large HOMO-LUMO gaps in accord with the high stabilities, and (11)B chemical shifts accurately reflecting the observed shifts. Analyses of the bonding in 1-4 reveal that the CpRe.CpRe interaction generates fragment orbitals that are able to contribute the "missing" three skeletal electron pairs required for skeletal bonding. The necessity of a Re.Re interaction for strong cluster bonding requires a borane fragment shape change to accommodate it, thereby explaining the noncanonical geometries. Application of the debor principle of borane chemistry to the shapes of 1-4 readily rationalizes the observed geometries of 5 and 6. This evidence of the scope of transition metal fragment control of borane geometry suggests the existence of a large class of metallaboranes with structures not found in known borane or metal clusters.

Theoretical studies on the smallest fullerene: from monomer to oligomers and solid States.

Hybrid B3LYP and density-functional-based tight-binding (DFTB) computations on the solid-state structures and electronic properties of the C(20) fullerene monomer and oligomers are reported. C(20) cages with C(2), C(2h), C(i), D(3d), and D(2h) symmetries have similar energies and geometries. Release of the very high C(20) strain is, in theory, responsible for the ready oligomerization and the formation of different solid phases. Open [2+2] bonding is preferred both in the oligomers and in the infinite one-dimensional solids; the latter may exhibit metallic character. Two types of three-dimensional solids, the open [2+2] simple cubic and the body-centered cubic (bcc) forms, are proposed. The energy of the latter is lower due to the better oligomer bonding. The open [2+2] simple cubic solid should be a conductor, whereas the bcc solids are insulators. The most stable three-dimensional solid-state structure, an anisotropically compressed form of the bcc solid, has a HOMO-LUMO gap of approximately 2 eV and a larger binding energy than that of the proposed C(36) solid.

From a spin-off to the advantageous use in Diels-Alder reactions: a combined synthetic, spectroscopic and computational approach to N-(dienyl)acylamines.

The acid-catalyzed condensation of aldehydes and acetamide has been shown to provide a pool of diverse equilibrating species. For the first time, the synthesis of substituted 1-N-acylamino-1,3-butadienes has been accomplished directly in moderate yields upon telomerization of two molecules of aldehyde with one molecule of carboxamide. Detailed spectroscopic and computational investigations establish the favourable formation of all-trans aminodienes under the reaction conditions. Employment thereof as diene building blocks in Diels-Alder reactions allows for the synthesis of carbocyclic molecules with high stereocontrol.

Neutral bishomoaromatic semibullvalenes.

Isolobal substitution of CH units by boron carbonyl groups (BCO) at C2,6 and C2,8,4,6 in semibullvalene favors the delocalized neutral bishomoaromatic systems substantially. The homoaromaticity is documented by the computed diatropic nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS). In addition, BCO substitution can result in low-lying triplet and open-shell singlet states. In contrast, substitution at C1,5 more than doubles the related Cope rearrangement barrier. The C2,6 and C2,8,4,6 BCO-substituted barbaralanes, barbaralones, and bullvalenes have substantially reduced barriers.

Bonding and electronic structure in consanguineous and conjugal iron and rhenium sp carbon chain complexes [MC4M'](n)+: computational analyses of the effect of the metal.

Density functional theory has been used to probe the bonding and electronic properties of the homo- and heterobimetallic sp carbon chain complexes (ML(m), = (eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(eta(2)-R(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PR(2))Fe, (eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(NO)(PR(3))Re; z = 0-4). All neutral complexes are best described by MCtbd1;CCtbd1;CM electronic structures, in accord with much experimental data. The singlet dications are best described by cumulenic (+)M=C=C=C=C=M(+) valence formulations. However, the diiron and rhenium/iron dications are found to possess triplet states of nearly identical energy, clarifying experimental magnetic data. Their electronic structures have dominant *(+)MCtbd1;CCtbd1;CM(+)* character, with some spin delocalization onto the carbon chain. The mixed valence monocation radicals exhibit delocalized unpaired electrons, in accord with class III (strongly coupled) and II (weakly coupled) assignments made from experimental data earlier, with some spin density on the carbon chain. An isolable diiron trication has a doublet ground state, but some computational data suggest a close-lying quartet. For the unknown diiron tetracation, a bis(carbyne) or (2+)Fetbd1;CCtbd1;CCtbd1;Fe(2+) electronic structure is predicted. Calculated adiabatic ionization potentials show the iron endgroup to be more electron-releasing than rhenium, in accord with electrochemical data. This polarizes the electronic structures of the rhenium/iron complexes. To help validate the computed model structures, crystal structures of ((eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Fe(eta(2)-dppe))(2)(mu-C(4)) and [((eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Fe(eta(2)-dippe))(2)(mu-C(4))](3+) 3PF(6)(-) are determined. Data are analyzed with respect to related diruthenium and dimanganese complexes.

Unusual coupling reactions of aldehydes and alkynes: a novel preparation of substituted phthalic acid derivatives by automated synthesis.

Based upon a highly versatile multicomponent methodology, a new one-pot synthesis of substituted phthalic acid derivatives from alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes was developed. The reaction involves the intermediacy of an acetamidodiene species which undergoes Diels-Alder addition to diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. The resultant acetamidocyclohexadiene is subject to elimination of acetamide under the reaction conditions to give rise to substituted diethyl phthalates in good yields. This domino condensation-cycloaddition-elimination sequence has been applied to a variety of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes. Furthermore, we demonstrated the exploitation of parallelized and automated synthesis technology for the rapid screening of reaction conditions and compositions. Detailed studies revealed the catalytic role of the employed acetamide and the occurrence of a stereoselective 1,4-syn elimination pathway under standard conditions.

Synthesis of a new chiral bisphospholane ligand for the Rh(I)-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of isomeric beta-acylamido acrylates.

The highly stereoselective synthesis of a chiral silylphospholane has been described, which can be advantageously used as a building block under base-free conditions for the construction of diphosphines related to DuPHOS. The utility of silylphospholane is shown in the synthesis of a new bisphospholane ligand 1 (MalPHOS), which is characterized by a maleic anhydride backbone. The ligand forms with Rh(I) a complex with a larger bite angle P-Rh-P than the analogue Me-DuPHOS complex. Both complexes have been tested in the asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated alpha- and beta-amino acid precursors of pharmaceutical relevance. In several cases, the new catalyst was superior in comparison to the Me-DuPHOS complex, in particular when (Z)-configured beta-acylamido acrylates were used as substrates.

Are neutral oxocarbons stable?

A set of novel oligomeric polycyclic neutral oxocarbons has been computed at the B3LYP level of density functional theory. On the basis of the calculated dissociation enthalpies, the most stable structures are C(9)O(9) and C(12)O(12) with benzene-like central ring, in agreement with the experimental finding, and the enhanced stability is due to their aromaticity. Several other oxocarbons also have been identified as stable and are targets for further experimental investigations.

Structures and magnetic properties of mono-doped fullerenes C59Xn and C59X(6mn)m (X=Bm, N+, P+, As+, Si): isoelectronic analogues of C60 and C60(6m).

Structures of mono-doped fullerenes, C59Xn and C59X(6mn)m (X=Bm, N+, P+, As+, Si), the isoelectronic analogues to C60 and C606m with 60 and 66 pi-electrons, have been investigated at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of density functional theory. On the basis of the computed nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) at the cage center and also at the center of individual rings as magnetic criteria, heterofullerenes with 60 pi-electrons are as aromatic as the parent C60, while those with 66 pi-electrons are much less aromatic than C606m. The very distinct endohedral chemical shifts of the 66 pi-electron systems may be useful to identify the heterofullerenes through their endohedral 3He NMR chemical shifts.

The structure and stability of Si60 and Ge60 cages: a computational study.

Structural studies of fullerene-like Si(60) and Ge(60) cages using ab initio methods were augmented by density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics (DFTB-MD) simulations of finite temperature effects. Neither the perfect I(h) symmetry nor the distorted T(h) structures are true minima. The energies of both are high relative to distorted, lower symmetry minima, C(i) and T, respectively, which still preserve C(60)-type connectivity. Both Si(60) and Ge(60) favor C(i) symmetry cages in which Si and Ge vertexes exhibit either near-trigonal or pyramidal geometries. These structural variations imply significant reactivity differences between different positions. The small magnetic shielding effects (NICS) indicate that aromaticity is not important in these systems. The inorganic fullerene cages have lower stabilities compared with their carbon analogs. Si(60) is stable towards spontaneous disintegration up to 700 K according to DFTB-MD simulations, and thus has potential for experimental observation. In contrast, Ge(60) preserves its cage structure only up to 200 K.
