Lateral eye movement while eyes are closed.

The present study was designed (1) to clarify whether lateral eye movements appear when eyes are closed as well as when they are open and (2) to examine some possible factors which may affect the phenomenon. Horizontal eye movements of 8 males and 8 females during reflection were recorded by means of electro-oculography. All the subjects showed fewer lateral eye movements in eyes-closed condition than in eyes-open condition, and neither the consistency of direction nor the effect of question types was replicated. These facts cannot be explained by the hemispheric activation hypothesis.

Metabolic fate of noscapine. II. Isolation and identification of novel metabolites produced by C-C bond cleavage.

1. The metabolism of noscapine was studied in rabbits, rats and human. 2. Apart from the O-demethylated metabolites already reported, three metabolites were isolated and identified as meconine, cotarnine and hydrocotamine, respectively. 3. Mass fragmentography (chemical ionization) was used to determine these products simultaneously. 4. Meconine was the major metabolite in all three species, accounting for about 3, 8 and 2% of the dose in the first 24 h urines of rats, rabbits and humans, respectively, although one woman excreted to a very high extent (22%). In rats, cotarnine bases were excreted at almost same level as that of meconine, but at lesser extent in other two species. Hydrocotamine and unchanged noscapine were excreted to less than 1% dose.

Lung cancer involving the superior vena cava: pneumonectomy with concomitant partial resection of superior vena cava.

We report two cases in which partial resection and reconstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC) were performed with the use of a temporary SVC-right atrial internal bypass for complete resection of carcinoma of the right lung. In the first case, the SVC was invaded by the primary tumor itself, arising in the anterior segment of the right upper lobe. In the second case a metastasized tracheobronchial lymph node had invaded the SVC. In both cases, partial resection of SVC was performed safely with the internal bypass technique.

Clinicopathological study of gastric leiomyogenic tumors.

1. Seventy cases of the leiomyogenic tumors were found in 5451 resected stomachs; 49 leiomyoma, 17 leiomyosarcoma and 4 leiomyoblastoma. These leiomyogenic tumors occupied 40.5% of 173 submucosal tumors of the stomach. 2. The average age was 51.7 in leiomyoma, 57.3 in leiomyosarcoma and 41.6 in leiomyoblastoma with male predominance. 3. The leiomyoma and leimyosarcoma were frequently found in the upper 2/3 of the stomach. 4. The size of the tumors was within 3 cm in diameter in about 80% of leiomyoma with ulcer formation of 10.2% and over 3 cm in about 88% of leiomyosarcoma with ulcer formation of 64.7%. 5. The classification of the leiomyogenic tumors into the benign and malignant was occationally difficult. For the diagnosis of the leiomyosarcoma, the number of mitosis, irregularity of nucleus, increase of cellularity and decrease of smooth muscle production were helpful.

Synthesis and pharmacological activity of a phosphate ester of delta8-tetrahydrocannabinol.

A water-soluble phosphate ester of delta8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta8-THC) was synthesized and its pharmacological activities were examined. The cataleptogenic and thiopental sleep-potentiating effects of delta8-THC phosphate in the mouse was approximately 10 and 7% of those of delta8-THC, respectively. However this phosphate showed almost the same potency and a longer duration of hypothermic effect, as compared with delta8-THC in the mouse. The acute toxicity of this phosphate was far lower than that of delta8-THC. delta 8-THC phosphate was difficultly hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase or mouse liver homogenate in vitro. The mode of action of the phosphate derivative is discussed in connection with this enzymatically difficult hydrolysis.

Metabolism of butyl p-nitrophenyl ether in vitro with rabbit liver preparations.

1. The metabolism of butyl p-nitrophenyl ether in vitro has been investigated with rabbit liver preparations. 2. Evidence for three metabolic pathways is presented. These involve initial microsomal hydroxylation at alpha, omega--1 or the omega positions of the butyl chain. 3. (omega--1)-Hydroxybutyl p-nitrophenyl ether was oxidized chiefly by the soluble fraction to the corresponding (omega--1)-oxo derivative which spontaneously decomposed to give p-nitrophenol. 4. omega-Hydroxybutyl p-nitrophenyl ether identified as a metabolite was further oxidized by the soluble fraction to p-nitrophenoxybutyric acid.
