An unique combination treatment for cancer patients has been attempted in our department. The treatment consists of 500 rad irradiation of cobalt 60 on the first day and drip infusion of mixture of 50mg adriamycin, 500mg cyclophosphamide and 500mg 5-fluorouracil on the next day. This combination therapy was repeated every 3 weeks. The myocardial intoxication may be a great problem in this therapy. Investigation was performed in 40 cancer patients in order to clarify of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) could show any protecting effect upon the possible myocardial intoxication. All patients were divided into 2 groups; one with CoQ10 of 20 patients, who received CoQ10 of 90mg/day orally and the other without CoQ10 of 20 patients. In the group without CoQ10, cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) and pulse rate increased significantly in all patients and on ECG low voltage of QRS complex was seen in 2 cases, changes of ST-segment, T-wave and appearance of arrhythmia were more than frequent in the group without CoQ10 than that with CoQ10. It is concluded that CoQ10 is effective for protecting the myocardium in this cancer therapy.

The cochlear aqueduct is the duct that connects the perilymphatic space of the scala tympani with the subarachnoid space. However, its functions are not yet fully elucidated. In the present study on the cochlear aqueduct of the guinea pig, a fracture preparation method was used to obtain new findings by scanning electron microscopy.
Effects of pulsatile venous flow upon the microcirculation were investigated in conditions with different venous pressures by using regional perfusion in dog's hind legs. In animals with venous pressure of -18 cmH2O (Collapsed stage), venous pulsation brought about a significant increase in mean oxygen consumption ratio and suppressed a rise of mean resistance ratio significantly. In animals with venous pressure of +2 cmH2O (normal venous pressure stage), the venous pulsation was effective in a rise of mean oxygen consumption ratio but was not effective in suppression of mean resistance ratio. In animals with venous pressure of +10 cmH2O (congestive stage), no effect of venous pulsation was recognized. We suppose that the intermittent elevation of venous pressure by venous pulsation is effective for opening some capillaries in animals with venous pressure below +2 cmH2O.

Since 1973, the balloon catheter test with a Swan-Ganz, Dotter-Lukas or Fogarty catheter has been attempted in our department in cases of atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) during cardiac catheterization and operation. Accurate informations concerning size, number and location of ASD were obtained during cardiac catheterization studies by using the balloon catheter. The difference between the size of the defect measured at catheterization and at operation was less than 1 mm in diameter. Size of the defect ranged from 13 to 44 mm in diameter (25.7 mm on the average) and bacame larger with patient's age. Measurement of left-to-right shunt ratios before and after the temporary balloon occlusion of the defect was of help in making a preoperative diagnosis of ASD with multiple defects. Size of foramen ovale ranged from 3 to 13 mm in diameter (5.2 mm on the average) and was not related to age. Size of the ductus in cases with PDA was measured during cardiac catheterization by using the balloon catheter. The difference between the size of the ductus measured with the balloon technique at catheterization and with a measuring rule at operation was less than 4 mm in diameter. The difference revealed the extensibility of the ductus. The temporary balloon occlusion of the ductus aided in determining presence of other cardiac anomalies. In cases of isolated PDA, the murmur became inaudible with the occlusion of the ductus. A balloon catheter inflated with radiopaque dye was used for measurements at cardiac catheterization and at operation. Persistent arrhythmias or other adverse effects of this procedure were not observed.

This paper describes a three-dimensional (3-d) display method by which the shape of an abnormal tissue, say, a breast tumour is represented as a line picture on a cathode ray tube (crt). The 3-d image consists of a set of overlaid contour lines, each of which shows the boundary of the tissue and is obtained from the corresponding B-scan digitized image by using image processing techniques such as smoothing and Laplacian. The system together with the 3-d algorithm is explained and some of the experimental results and pertaining problems are discussed.

Light and electron microscopic studies have been made on an anaplastic giant-cell tumor that developed in a woman 8 years after an operation on the thyroid for papillary carcinoma. Many giant cells were observed in the anaplastic tumor tissue, but no follicles. Numerous tightly-packed mitochondria and abundant ribosomes were present, but there were no desmosomes. The basement membrane was not distinct.
