[Topographical variations in the development and distribution of the pattern of retinal phosphatides (author's transl)].

The present study deals with the topographical variations of the pattern of the retinal phosphatides. For evalution of the phosphatides in the central and peripheral retina served the eyes of rabbits, 15, 26 and 60 days after birth. The essential process of maturation was only in the central retinal area provable. In the retina of adult pigs the pattern of the fatty acids of the phosphatides showed a decrease of the polyunsaturated fatty acids towards the periphery.

Renal trauma in children.

Recent experience with two cases of renal trauma led us to review 57 admissions to Children's Memorial Hospital, CHICAGO, DURING THE LAST 15 YEARS. It became apparent that a clearly defined approach to the management of renal trauma was lacking. A uniform investigation of such patients to include early intravenous pyelography and followed by renal scan or arteriography when pyelography is inconclusive in assessing the exact nature of the renal damage is recommended. The importance of these studies in diagnosing associated congenital anomalies and solitary kidney is also shown. Criteria for management by early surgical intervention or conservative approach are presented. The ultimate aim in management is to preserve the greatest possible amount of functioning renal tissue with the least risk and morbidity to the patient.

[Macular function after successful surgery of retinal detachment (author's transl)].

Following successful surgery 20 cases of retinal detachment with previous separation of the macular area were submitted to examination of visual acuity, colour perception and metamorphopsia. Improvement of visual acuity usually developed during the 12-week-period of supervision; this improvement was related to the preoperative duration of the detachment. The disturbance of colour sense was confined to the perception of yellow and blue, beeing independent of the duration of the retinal detachment; as a rule a tendency to improvement was found during the time of observation. Labile postoperative metamorphopsias were more pronounced in the spoke-test than in the Amsler-test. No evident connexions between the duration of retinal detachment and the intensity of metamorpoptic distortions could be found. In cases with retinal tears in the posterior segment cured with a high plombade effect stable visual distortions occurred in the Amsler-test only. Such distortions seem to be due to mechanical factors and cannot be considered real metamorphopsias.

[Different behavior of human melanoma cells from primary tumor and metastases in vitro].

The morphologic differences of two melanoma cell cultures from a primary melanoma and a metastasis are described. Though both cultures looked very similar at the beginning, they developed into totally different forms. Long, thin spindle-shaped cells containing an optically dense plasma grew in the cultured from the primary melanoma during its whole life span and the epithelioid cells of metastasis culture separated itself into different subcultures. The cells of both subcultures detached from the bottom of the culture flasks after 15 days of growth and began to spread again 7 days later with two very different forms. This transformation was observed three more times at monthly intervals. The possible relationship between these morphological alterations and the ability of the melanoma cells to produce metastases as well as the usefulness of melanoma cell cultures for immunodiagnostic purposes are discussed.

[Experimental ultrasonography of the rabbit eye (author's transl)].

In 20 adult rabbits of the Gelbsilber-strain the axial depth of the anterior chamber, the axial thickness of the lens, and 7 different diameters of the vitreous chamber were measured by means of bioechometry for standardization of the to date neglected experimental ultrasonography of animal eyes. For proper interpretation of echograms of the rabbit eye the particular anatomy and topography of the lens must be considered. Penetration of the large and almost spherical lens by the beam can only be avoided if the probe is placed behind the limbus or behind the equator of the globe. In the axial ultrasonogram the high single peaked echo of the posterior lens capsule appears between the third and fourth fifth of the entire axial length. In all other types of echogram the beam passes through peripheral sections of the lens oblique, and produces several small echoes, thus eventually simulating a pathologic echogram of the vitreous body.
