It was tested whether T lymphocytes, when stimulated in vitro by M locus-coded lymphocyte activating determinants (LAD), are able to mediate cytotoxic effector functions. The assay for cytotoxicity included both the use of purified appropriate target cells (i.e. purified lipopolysaccharide blasts) as well as the use of phytohemagglutinin dependent cytolysis as a model for detecting cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). Although strong proliferative responses were obtained in the mixed lymphocyte culture, the T cell blast generated did not display any detectable cytotoxic effector function. Thus, it is concluded that LAD, at least in the M locus-dependent system, do have the capacity to induce T cell proliferation but do not induce CTL.

On the 21st day of pregnancy the amount of fatty acids transferred from the mother to the fetuses was determined using the tracer technique and a mathematical model. The present study showed that 0.19 mu-mol fatty acids/min pass into the fetuses from the maternal circulation. The amount of fatty acids required for the growth and development of the rat fetuses amounts to 0.25 mu-mol fatty acids/min. From these data one can conclude that the maternal circulation is an even more important source of fetal fatty acids than the fatty acid synthesis in fetal tissue.
Normal murine peritoneal macrophages were rendered cytotoxic against 51Cr-labelled allogeneic and syngeneic target cells by incubation with supernatant of selected cell cultures.'Active' culture supernatant was produced both by specifically sensitized cytotoxic T lymphocytes as well as by mitogen-stimulated T cells, but not by mitogen-stimulated B cells. The in vitro induced macrophage-mediated cytotoxicity was found to be non-specific in the sense that 51Cr-labelled target cells of different H-2 haplotype were lysed equally well.
Fluorescein-labeled antigen-antibody complexes could be made visible by scanning electron microscopy using an intensifying device. This new method of immunocathodoluminescence was demonstrated on cryostat sections of rat kidneys containing glomerular fibrin as the result of endotoxin infusion. The resulting photographs correspond with those obtained by immunofluorescent microscopy. The advantage of this technique is, however, the larger depth of focus. By using thinner cyostat sections it is expected that the higher resolution of scanning microscopy will provide even better details in three dimensions.

A method of joint surface replacement for the operative correction of severe osteoarthrosis of the hip joint is described. This type of surface replacement has obvious advantages especially in the younger age group. From experience with homogenous carilage transplants in which only the joint cartilage surfaces are transplanted, the method described offers hope of good results. The important advantage of surface replacement is the fact that the substance of the neck and head of femur are not removed. Therefore all alternative future procedures remain available if necessary. Accurate assessment of this method will require more prolonged follow up.
A computerized documentation system for the main perinatal data of the newborn is presented. The information about pregnancy and birth are recorded on two optic mark reader forms. They can be used as a part of the conventional patient's history and as a transport document. The forms are recorded by simple pencil marking without further clerical effort for the staff. A direct data processing of the marked informations is possible with a computer. After two years' use of the new documentation system our information about the admitted newborns had markedly improved. An early regstration of pre- and pernatal risk factors is possible.
For the documentation of the neonatal status we use computer-adapted optic mark reader forms since 1972. All important symptoms and signs are scheduled on two sheets and are assigned by pencil marking. The forms can be read automatically and are suitable for data processing. A copy remains in the patients clinical file and can be used like a conventionally written status. The mark reader forms improved singificantly our knowledge about the newborn's status. The problems of introducing the new documentation into the hospital routine are reported.

The flow rate of serum free fatty acids (FFA) into the lipids of brown adipose tissue (BAT) of newborn rabbits was determined by intravenous injection of [14C]-1-palmitate. For a normal 7 day old animal during acute cold exposure the flow rate is (1 hour in 20 degrees C ambient temperature) 0.209 mumol/minute, that is 3.6% of the serum FFA turnover. Prolonged cold exposure only induced an increase in FFA influx if the lipid depot had been depleted (48 hours starvation in 20 degrees C). Consequently, the BAT takes up serum FFA for heat production only after mobilisation of its lipid stores. It is supposed that the mechanism of the uptake of serum FFA by the BAT is connected with their esterification to triglycerides. The phospholipids of BAT which are not only membrane bound lipids are characterized by a high metabolism.
The effects of i.v. injected Fentanyl and droperidol used either singly or in combination were observed in 50 experiments carried out on cats which had been relaxed and artificially respirated. The preganglionic discharges of the cervical sympathetic nerve and action potentials of the phrenic nerve, the mean arterial pressure and the heart rate were recorded. The experiments showed that with the dosage of 0.0042-0.0083 mg/kg Fentanyl no significant change in the recorded functions took place. The dosage of 0.0166 mg/kg Fentanyl led to an activation of the central sympathetic activity and to a inhibition of the respiratory centre which persisted for as long as 60 min after the injections. Other than as above, a dosage of 0.15-0.6 mg/kg droperidol led to a decrease of the blood pressure and a depression of the sympathetic nerve activity, while the activity of the phrenic nerve remained unchanged. The effect on the blood pressure was mainly influenced by the central nervous system as the inhibition of the pressor effect of noradrenaline was only minimally. The dosage of 0.0083 mg/kg Fentanyl combined with 0.3 mg/kg dropendol as administered for neuroleptanalgesia led to a decrease in blood pressure and a depression of the central sympathetic and phrenic nerve activity both in rest and in stress during asphyxia. The effects were minimal and accorded virtually to the effects produced by 0.5 vol-% Halothane during the first 25 min of inhalation, which had been registered in previous experiments. Contrary to the effects of Halothane, neuroleptanalgesia produced no decrease in the heart rate, no depression on the pressor effects of noradrenaline and no accumulation of irregularities in cardiac rhythm after administration of noradrenaline.

The primary immune response against sheep red blood cells in T cell-deficient spleen cell cultures from nude mice was tested in the absence and presence of allogeneic spleen cells. The allogeneic spleen cells differed either in regard to the major histocompatibility complex (H-2) or only with respect to the M-locus. Surprisingly the M-locus different spleen cells were almost as efficient in enhancing the anti-sheep red blood cell response in nude cultures as were the cells differing on the complete H-2 complex. Evidence is presented that AKR anti-theta serum sensitive T cells are responsible for the M-locus-dependent effect edscribed. This effect is shown to be mediated by a factor released from actived T cells stimulated in M-locus different mixed lymphocyte cultures. Since almost identical parameters have been observed in both the M-locus-dependent situation as in the "classical" allogeneic situation we concluded that an allogeneic effect can be induced by T cells responding to a complete set of the major histocompatibility complex (H-2) as well as to lymphocyte-activating determinants (M-locus) alone.
