[The proof of age differences of slow acoustically evoked potentials of adults by a multivariate statistical analysis (author's transl)].

Many authors consider the nature of the slow acoustically evoked potentials to be partly a specific one. Therefore the AEP-time behavior probably contains more information about the functional state of the acoustical channel than it is got by the usual measurement of only 3 values (N1P2-amplitude, 2 latencies). A test of this hypothesis is possible with a multivariate mathematical procedure, which involves the whole AEP-time behavior. We are using the multivariate variance- and discriminant analysis. For the application of this statistical method random samples of patients with certain otologic diseases are needed. To avoid mistakes in grouping these samples some preliminary investigations had been necessary: This paper reports the results of multivariate investigations concerning age differences of the AEP in normal hearing adults. By means of the multivariate variance analysis the AEP of 3 age groups were examined (group 1: 15--34 years, group 2: 35--44 years, group 3: 45--60 years). At 1000 Hz as well as at 400 Hz significant differences between the group averages were found, which were not detectable by the usual N1P2-amplitude measurement. Furthermore with the discriminant analysis it is possible to perform a relatively reliable differentiation between the individual AEP of the age groups 1 and 3.

[Ultrastructural investigations on the nuclear channel system in the human endometrium (author's transl)].

The Nuclear Channel System (NCS) is a distinct endometrial pattern as observed by transmission electron microscopy. The NCS was identified in the present study in cell nuclei of endometrial glands during mid and late proliferation. These observations do not support the concept that the NCS develops at the ovulation, and is therefore not a typical post ovulatory structure. It is suggested that there are relations between hormonal factors and the development of the NCS which are as yet not clarified.

[Problems of localization of noise damage in the cochlea - 70 years after Wittmaacks first animal experiments (author's transl)].

Wittmaack was the first, who investigated noise damage of the inner ear by animal experiments 70 years ago. This paper deals with the problem of estimating the extend of the damaged area on the basilar membrane following noise exposure by evaluating the microphonic potentials (MP) detected from the round window. With the aid of a mathematic model it is possible to predict both the decrease of the MP after noise exposure and the localization of the damaged area on Corti's organ. These predictions are examined by morphological investigations using the method of Spoendlin and Brun.

Testosterone levels and gonadotrophins in Klinefelter's patients treated with injections of mesterolone cipionate.

Hormone levels were measured in patients with Klinefelter's syndrome after treatment with 100 mg mesterolone cipionate (twice monthly). There was no difference in plasma testosterone and FSH levels in treated and untreated patients. The basal and maximum LH levels were lower, but remained raised. The urinary excretion of testosterone as measured by liquid gaschromatography was higher in treated patients after treatment was discontinued.-From these results it is concluded that in spite of reported decreases of plasma testosterone during therapy with mesterolone cipionate this drug does not lead to severe impairment of the endogenous hormone production after discontinuing treatment.

Leukocyte response to somatostatin in normals and patients with bacterial leukocytosis.

In normals and patients with acute bakterial leukocytosis synthetic somatostatin decreases cell count of stab neutrophils, neutrophils and eosinophils. After termination of somatostatin infusion a rebound phenomenon occurred. In healthy normals lymphocyte count increased during somatostatin infusion. This effect outlasts the end of infusion for more than 24 h. No significant effect could be demonstrated in patients with a bacterial leukocytosis.

[Clinical and pharmacologic aspects of various betamethasone crystalline suspensions].

The commercially available betamethasone suspensions for injection used in this study have clearly shown quantitative differences in the combination of their easily hydrosoluble betamethasone esters and those difficult to dissolve in water, as well as in the shapes and sizes of their crystals. With regard to their influence on the endogenous cortisol production the two preparations have shown a highly deviating pharmaco-dynamic duration of action-corresponding to their different galenic composition (betamethasone phosphate/acetate approx. 7-8 days; betamethasone phosphate/dipropionate approx. 16-18 days). During the phase of suppression the reduced endogenous cortisol is largely compensated by the pharmaco-dynamic activity of the exogenous steroid.

Cyclophosphamide-sensitive T lymphocytes suppress the in vivo generation of antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes.

Murine T lymphocytes sensitized in vitro against either allogeneic lymphocytes or syngeneic hapten-conjugated lymphocytes do differentiate into highly effective cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) (1-3). In vivo immunization of T lymphocytes to the same antigens, however, results in the generation of only marginal cytotoxic activity (1,4,5). Recently we found that the weakness of in vivo generated cytotoxicity is not due to a failure of antigen-induced T-cell sensitization but rather due to suppression of the in vivo differentiation of sensitized CTL precursors into effective CTL(6). In keeping with this finding it was postulated that suppressor cells may regulate the in vivo differentiation of CTL. We now report, that cyclophosphamide-sensitive T cells suppress the in vivo differentiation of antigen-specific CTL. Thus, pretreatment of mice with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg) converts their state of low responsiveness to a state of high responsiveness.

[Operative correction of leg length discrepancy (author's transl)].

Differences in the lengths of limbs can alter the appearance of the human body. A discrepancy in the lengths of the lower limbs, which eventually leads to difficulties in gait, can be corrected surgically either by shortening the sound limb or by gradual lengthening of the foreshortened leg. The advantages of lengthening are that the body's total height and normal proportions are maintained. Bilateral shortening or lengthenings can be done in exceptional cases for correction of the body height.

[Growth hormone, LH and FSH under function dynamical conditions in serum and basic corticol and testosterone serum levels in brain-injured patients during dexamethasone treatment].

In 14 male patients with severe head injury the following hormones were measured by radioimmunological methods in plasma: Basal levels of LH, FSH, GH, testosterone and total corticoids; furthermore LH-releasing-hormone- and insulin-hypoglycaemia-tests were done. The investigations have shown, that in patients with severe head injury no essential impairment of the hypothalamus-hypophyseal-system controlled by LH-, FSH- and GH-secretion could be detected. Diminished testosterone and accelerated LH-levels are measurable, whereas total corticoids were not significantly accelerated. Because of treatment with dexamethasone the effect of this substance has to be discussed.

Influence of somatostatin on peripheral leucocyte count and granulation tissue in man and rats.

Subcutaneous injection of synthetic protamin-zink-somatostatin completely prevents endotoxin-induced leucocytosis in normal rats. Piromen-induced elevated stab neutrophil, neutrophil and monocyte counts remain within the normal range during somatostatin administration. There is an inhibiting effect of synthetic protamin-zink-somatostatin on the wet weights of granulation tissue of cotton pellet granulomata, too. Incorporation of 35S-sulfate in sulfated mucopolysaccharides of granulation tissue in cotton pellet granulomata is not inhibited. Intravenous administration of synthetic linear somatostatin decreases stab neutrophil and neutrophil blood count in patients with acute bacterial leucocytosis. After the termination of somatostatin infusion a rebound phenomenon occurs. In healthy subjects lymphocyte count increases during somatostatin infusion. This effect can not be demonstrated in patients with bacterial leucocytosis.
