Phylogenetic studies of two rubredoxins from sulfate reducing bacteria.

The sequences of two rubredoxins isolated from the sulfate reducing bacteria: Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Desulfovibrio gigas have been elucidated. They have similar sequences but many more differences occur than would be expected from two bacteria of the same genus. Of the 52 sites, only 37 are occupied by identical residues. The primary structures are compared with those of the anaerobic bacteria rubredoxins of Clostridium pasteurianum, Micrococcus aerogenes, Pseudomonas oleovorans and Peptostreptococcus elsdenii: only 12 identities are found, mostly in the two clusters that contain two iron-bound cysteines each. A phylogenetic tree based on the primary structures is presented and possible relations with plant and bacterial ferredoxins are discussed. A secondary and tertiary structure stereochemically compatible with the sequence data, is proposed.

[Differences of X-ray exposure between roentgen examen with a conventional roentgen-screen-system and with an image intensifer-television-unit (author's transl)].

During roentgen examens of patients in the II. Medizinische Poliklinik the X-ray exposure was determined. It corresponded to the datas described in literature. Two groupes were compared: 518 patients examined with a conventional roentgen-screen-system and 642 patients examined with an image-intensifer-television-system. The results demonstrated that with exception of thoracical X-ray examination the replacing of the old system by the television system brought a remarkable increase of the X-ray exposure. The doses depended of the patients constitution to a high degree.

[Sonography and conventional radiography for post-operative local infections in the upper abdomen (author's transl)].

The findings on sonography and radiography were compared in 32 patients with abscesses or empyemas in the upper abdomen following surgery. Sonography demonstrated each of eight liver abscesses, eleven of 21 upper abdominal empyemas and three abscesses or empyemas in other positions. Corresponding figures for radiography were five out of eight liver abscesses, 16 out of 21 upper abdominal empyemas and one of the remaining lesions. The methods are complimentary. Sonography demonstrates fluidfilled cavities, radiography shows particularly the presence of extraluminal gas. Recommendations are made for the proper sequence of these diagnostic measures.

[Radiation protection measurements at the intensive care unit and in the operating room].

For chest X-ray in the ward and for intraoperative cholangiography the registered doses were low. A limitation of the exposures or the operations was not necessary. For osteosynthesis operations the doses for the patient and the staff could be kept low by preparing the operation adequately, by using modern image-intensifer units with grid and automatic regulation in fluoroscopy, and with discipline in using fluoroscopy. During one week a surgeon could do eight osteosynthesis operations without reaching legally imposed dose limit. The control area could be restricted to a space around the patient with a radius of two meters.

[Exposure doses of the patient and the medical staff during urological x-ray examens (author's transl)].

During 32 intravenous urografies and 48 angiografies of the kidney and the suprarenal glands the x-ray doses at the patient's skin and gonades were determined. During the angiografies the doses were measured at the hands, the gonades and the front (eyes) of the medical staff. The results are discusses. Because the x-ray doses are realtively high, the number of the pictures and the exposure time is to be reduced to the minimum. Clinical experience (sufficient training) and special knowledge is the best x-ray protection.

[Radiologic signs in the colon in disease of the gallbladder (author's transl)].

Acute and chronic inflammation of the gallbladder may simulate pseudotumors of the right half of the colon; this may at times be obvious on straight films of the abdomen. Analysis of the changes of relief in contrast-examinations of the colon will lead to the correct diagnosis. Inflammatory reactions of the colon mostly appear near the mesocolic tenia. Cholecystocolic fistulae are mostly due to perforation of stones, only exceptionally to tumors. Adhesions appear to be the precondition for malignant infiltration and stoneperforation.

Detecting evolutionary trends from molecular data. 1. Some measures of compositional nonrandomness.

The measures of compositional nonrandomness to be discussed as to their physical significance and to their power of detecting evolutionary significant variations are (see article)(pi a priori probability for amino acid i, ni its number of occurrences in a protein of length L). As a concrete example, the pi are here supposed to represent equal frequencies of all non-stop codons. For each quantity, four levels are defined: The base level, with optimal (i.e. minimal nonrandomness) composition, admitting non-integer values of ni; the integer level with optimal integer composition; the noise level, represented by a typical random cain; and the real protein level. On all these levels, S, which is the measure with the most direct physical sense, shows the smoothest behavior with the smallest relative fluctuations and thus the highest resolution.
