Effect of oral administration of calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide gel and dihydrotachysterol on renal acidosis.

The effects of oral administration of calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide gel, dihydrotachysterol (DHT) and sodium bicarbonate on metabolic acidosis and plasma calcium and phosphate were studied in 7 patients with chronic renal failure. Single administration of calcium carbonate alleviated the acidosis and increased the urinary bicarbonate excretion. These effects were potentiated when aluminum hydroxide gel was administered in combination with calcium carbonate. The plasma calcium was increased by this combination therapy. The effects of these two agents on acidosis and plasma calcium were further enhanced by the additional administration of DHT. Urinary bicarbonate excretion was less during the treatment with aluminum hydroxide gel and calcium carbonate than with aluminum hydroxide gel and sodium bicarbonate, when the excretions were compared at the similar concentrations of plasma bicarbonate. Aluminum hydroxide gel and DHT are likely to enhance the effect of calcium carbonate, which works as an alkalinizing salt on acidosis, probably through increasing calcium absorption in the intestine. And the three agents suppress the leak of bicarbonate into the urine contributing to the improvement of acidosis.

Epidemiological studies on patients with a persistent vegetative state.

Persistent vegetative state after severe brain damage was studied epidemiologically in 110 cases from 1973 to 1976. The causes of brain damage were varied. More than one-third of the cases were due to trauma, and about one-fifth were the result of vascular accidents. Three year observation revealed that 65% of the patients died during this period. Mean survival time for dead patients was 38 months. Reactivity, clinical signs, EEG findings, methods of management, and results of various trials of treatment were investigated in connection with the patient's prognosis.

Decreased plasma postheparin lipolytic activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Plasma postheparin lipolytic activity (PHLA) was measured on 50 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Plasma PHLA was significantly decreased in SLE patients. This decrease was most striking in the acute phase of the disease. There was a close relationship between decreased PHLA and immunologic factors indicative of the acute phase of SLE. These immunologic factors included shaggy antinuclear antibody pattern, low serum complement titer, high DNA antibody titer, mixed cryoglobulin and lumpy glomerular pattern by immunofluorescent staining.

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the uterus--ultrastructural and hormonal study.

A clear of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the uterus combined with early invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix was reported. The adenocarcinoma was found to be in histologic continuity with the squamous cell carcinoma as well as with the cervical glandular epithelium. Ultrastructurally, the epithelial cells of the adenocarcinoma showed junctional complexes, well developed microvilli, parallel stacks of granular endoplasmic reticulums and twisted rope-like nucleoli, all of which were in accord with the cytologic characteristics of endometrial carcinoma. Hormonal study of the tumor suggested the presence of estrogen receptor and a lack of endocrine productibility. These findings provide an additional support for the Müllerian duct origin of uterine clear cell adenocarcinoma.

Piezoelectric and related properties of hydrated collagen.

Two piezoelectric constants (polarization per unit stress, d=d'-id'', and polarization per unit strain, e=e'-ie''), the elastic constant, and dielectric constant are determined for oriented collagen at different hydration levels at 10 Hz from -150 to 50 degrees C. With no hydration (approximately 0% H2O), d' increases slightly with higher temperatures, while e' decreases slightly. Near 11 wt% H2O, both d' and e' increase then decrease around 0 degrees C, and is probably caused by an increase of the dielectric constant and the ionic conductivity in the nonpiezoelectric phase. Hydration greater than 25 wt%, d' and e' decrease above -50 degrees C which is considered to be due to a greater ionic conductivity surrounding the piezoelectric phase.
