In vitro activities of antibacterial agents against E. coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter and Proteus which were isolated from patients urinary tract infections at 8 hospitals in Japan, were investigated by agar dilution method from July to October in 1979. The summarized results are as follows. 1. Among oral antibacterial agents, MPC and PPA have showed potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and Klebsiella. Among parenteral antibiotics, CTM was the most active against E. coli and Klebsiella. However, ABPC-resistant E. coli and Klebsiella have appeared to occupy about 40% and 96% of bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections, respectively. 2. In vitro activities of antibacterial agents against Proteus and Citrobacter showed not so potent. 3. Causative organisms in female patients with simple urinary tract infections were mainly E. coli and Klebsiella. 4. Among oral antibacterial agents, PPA have shown similar antimicrobial activities against E. coli isolated from simple and complicated urinary tract infections. ABPC and MPC have been influenced in some degree by these factors. However, parenteral antibiotics are not influenced by these factors. On the other hand, in vitro activities of antibacterial agents against Klebsiella isolated from simple and complicated urinary tract infections were similar.

A system was designed to isolate second-site intergenic suppressors of a thermosensitive mutation of the dnaE gene of Escherichia coli. The dnaE gene codes for the alpha subunit of DNA polymerase III [McHenry, C. S. & Crow, W. (1979) J. Biol. Chem. 254, 1748-1753]. One such suppressor, named sueA77, was finely mapped and found to be located at 82 min on the E. coli chromosome, between dnaA and recF, and within the dnaN gene [Sakakibara, Y. & Mizukami, T. (1980) Mol. Gen. Genet. 178, 541-553]. The dnaN gene codes for the beta subunit of DNA polymerase III holoenzyme [Burgers, P. M. J., Kornberg, A. & Sakakibara, Y. (1981) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 78, 5391-5395]. The sueA77 mutation was trans-dominant over its wild-type allele, and it suppressed different thermosensitive mutations of dnaE with different maximal permissive temperature. These properties were interpreted as providing genetic evidence for interaction of the dnaE and dnaN gene products in E. coli.
The results of an autopsy of an 80-year-old Japanese male with acute myeloid leukemia who died of spontaneous rupture of the spleen are reported. The patient was admitted because of anorexia, fatigue, weight loss, and multiple skin eruptions. Hematological examinations indicated a rapid increase in myeloblasts. The patient collapsed on the 28th hospital day, immediately after complaining of severe epigastralgia and vomiting. He died ten hours later. The autopsy revealed extensive leukemic infiltration of the bone marrows, spleen, lymph nodes, skin, and other internal organs. The spleen was enlarged and was ruptured in places at the hilar portion. Massive intraperitoneal hemorrhage from the rupture was the direct cause of death. The mechanisms of splenic rupture are discussed.
Transcatheter embolization was performed in three patients with renal arteriovenous malformations with multiple arterial feeders. The patients were followed angiographically for 6--14 months. In two cases, the malformation disappeared with focal loss of renal tissue in the region of embolization. In the third, there was recurrence of hematuria. Angiography demonstrated incomplete embolization, but the arteriovenous malformation had diminished.
