[Spurious thrombocytopenia caused by granulocyte platelet rosettes (platelet satellitism) (author's transl)].

Extraordinary platelet adherence to polymorphonuclear leukocytes was seen in EDTA anticoagulated blood smears of two patients. From the same blood samples platelets were greatly reduced in number. Platelet satellitism (granulocyte platelet rosettes) is a rare phenomenon in vitro, only seen in EDTA anticoagulated blood, and the platelets surrounded polymorphonuclear leukocytes only. Phagocytosis of platelets was also observed. The cause of platelet satellitism is unknown. Capillary blood should be investigated in order to prevent a false thrombocytopenia.

[Reinfection and recidive in Hymenolepis nana infections (author's transl)].

The excretion of Hymenolepis nana eggs begins in CF-1 mice between the 11th and 12th day irrespective of the wormload. In Swiss mice, however, the onset of egg excretion can be retarded up to the 15th day if the number of parasites is high. The re-appearance of eggs after treatment occurs between the 6th and 9th day using an exact diagnostic method. If the number of parasites is low, than re-appearance of eggs occurs later than if it is high. An infection with eggs protects mice for several months against a re-infection with eggs but not against one with cysticercoids. If cysticercoids are used to establish the primary infection no immune reaction against a re-infection develops. If eggs reappear in the faeces after treatment then the following conclusion can be drawn: Eggs reappear within a week after treatment then it must be a relapse. Eggs reappear during the second week then it can be either a relapse or a re-infection. Eggs reappear at three weeks or later then it can only be due to a re-infection.

Separation of Chlorophyll Degradation from Other Senescence Processes in Leaves of a Mutant Genotype of Meadow Fescue (Festuca pratensis L.).

Chlorophyll levels in l-cm sections of the youngest fully expanded leaves of normal (Y) Festuca pratensis L. declined almost to zero over a period of 6 days after excision. Chlorophyll in a mutant genotype (NY) remained near the initial level for the whole of this period. Abscisic acid promoted pigment loss in Y but had no significant effect on chlorophyll in NY. Kinetin retarded pigment loss in Y but was ineffective in NY. Other biochemical changes associated with leaf senescence-reduction in protein content and the appearance of novel isoenzymes of alpha-naphthyl acetate esterases-occurred in both genotypes. Abscisic acid accelerated protein breakdown, whereas kinetin inhibited the loss of protein in both genotypes. The mutation thus appears to be expressed as a highly specific lesion in pigment metabolism. We concluded that pigment breakdown, which is widely used as an index of leaf senescence, may not be an inevitable part of the aging process.

Preparation of insoluble collagen from human cartilage.

A simple technique is described for the removal of proteoglycans from human cartilage by sequential treatments with H(2)O(2) followed by trypsin digestion. The resultant fibres contain no uronic acids and have the amino acid composition of highly purified collagen.
