[Measurements of cell adhesion to biomaterials by supersonics (author's transl)].

In order to examine eligibility of supersonic vibration energy for investigating cell-material contract, L-strain fibroblasts were cultivated on glass surface and exposed to supersonic vibration. The cells adhered to the glass surface were detached by supersonic vibration and both of adhered cells to the glass surface and detached cells after the supersonic exposure were cultivated for one week. And the cell activity of the detached cells was estimated with cell multiplication by cell nuclei counting and their morphological changes. As a result, use of supersonic vibration energy was found effective in expressing degrees of cell adhesiveness to glass or biomaterials. The most appropriate vibration was decided at 485 KHz in frequency, 5 V in secondary voltage and approximately 30 seconds. It is revealed that the results may be effective in the analysis of cell-biomaterial contact.

Nephrolithotomy by one-layer interrupted parenchymal suture.

Since 1967, when Taguchi devised a method of closing renal incisions in nephrolithotomy in which the renal capsule, parenchyma and pelvic mucosa are sutured together as one layer without prior hemostasis, this method, with subsequent modifications of surgical technique, has been employed in 47 cases of staghorn or multiple large calculi. The simplified method of suture shortens the clamp-time of the renal pedicle during operation, minimizes injury to the parenchyma, while assuring adequate hemostasis. All the treated cases showed good results postoperatively, free from any serious complications such as secondary hemorrhage. Renal function tests after nephrolithotomy by this method showed decreases of 20 and 16% in glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow, respectively, which returned to preoperative levels in 2 weeks. Pre- and postoperative renal arteriograms indicated some changes in the intrarenal arteries and parenchyma due to the incision and method of suture. Occlusion of intrarenal arteries occurred in 91.7% of the cases, in fact at the level of interlobar or minor artery in 90%, and the average number of sites of arterial interruption per kidney was 4.7. The author considers the method to be irrevocably perfect for renal parenchymal suture.

Biocompatibility of dental amalgams in vitro during 52 week period.

Short term biocompatibility of biomaterials including various dental materials has been elucidated so far. When considering the practical cases of utilization of the biomaterials, it is known that they stay for quite a long period in situ once after brought into the living system. It seems, therefore, essential that long term biocompatibility of the materials should be clarified in order to provide better knowledge on various aspects of biocompatibility. The present paper deals with long term biocompatibility in vitro of common dental materials, dental amalgams.

Skin test-active substance prepared from culture filtrate of Fonsecaea pedrosoi.

Ethanol-precipitated substance (EP) was prepared from culture filtrate of Fonsecaea pedrosoi. EP was separated into two components by passing through a Sephadex G-50 column; the faster passing component was referred to as EP-1, the slower as EP-2. EP-1 and EP-2 were evaluated as an antigen for detecting cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity in patients with chromomycosis. EP-1 elicited positive delayed skin reactions in all of 8 patients with chromomycosis, of which 7 caused by F. pedrosoi and one by Exophiala jeunselmei. Healthy subjects, patients with sporotrichosis and patients with tinea barbae failed to react to EP-1. These results indicate that EP-1 is a useful tool for detecting cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity in patients with chromomycosis caused by F. pedrosoi. It was found that precipitin test using EP-1 as an antigen had little diagnostic value in chromomycosis. EP-2 did not show antigenic activity in both skin and precipitin reactions.
