[Intracranial arteritis with circulating immune complexes].

Thirty-eight patients below the age of 50 years were investigated and in twelve, circulating immune complexes were found. Eight of these had angiographic evidence of an arteritis of the intracranial vessels. The causative factors, the role of the circulating immune complexes and the angiographic appearances in intracranial arteritis are discussed.

Aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses.

The authors examined 105 proved cases of aspergillosis involving the paranasal sinuses or nasal fossa. Mycosis was always unilateral, and the maxillary sinus was infected in all cases. Early stages were manifested by an intraluminal soft-tissue mass representing the mass of mycelia. Fifty-nine patients (56%) demonstrated very dense intraluminal calcifications. Such dense concretions suggest the diagnosis of aspergillosis.

[Adrenal masses--diagnostic ranking of methods].

The ultrasonographic, computertomographic and angiographic findings of 87 patients with adrenal tumours were analysed retrospectively. Histologically, 16 adrenal adenomas, 6 carcinomas, 4 cysts, 5 pheochromocytomas, 3 neuroblastomas and 1 myelolipoma were found. Adrenal metastases were present in 52 cases. Dependent on clinical symptoms and the expected pathological findings, the radiological procedure varies. The diagnostic accuracy of the various methods is compared.

Characterization of inhibitor A, a protease from Bacillus thuringiensis which degrades attacins and cecropins, two classes of antibacterial proteins in insects.

The insect pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis produces an exoprotease, inhibitor A, at the beginning of the stationary growth phase. In vitro, the enzyme selectively destroys cecropins and attacins, two antibacterial proteins found in immune hemolymph from Hyalophora cecropia. The specificity of this enzyme was investigated using cecropin A(1-33) and HPLC for separation and characterization of the fragments obtained. A maximum of 12 different peptides were produced and their positions in the known sequence of cecropin A(1-33) were deduced from their amino acid compositions. The enzyme did not show a stringent requirement for a specific amino acid sequence at the cleavage site but prefers a hydrophobic residue on the C-terminal side. The specificity of the enzyme is explained in terms of the open structure of the cecropins and a pronounced inability of inhibitor A to attack globular proteins.

Lymphatic metastases to the esophagus.

The authors present 4 cases of esophageal involvement by lymphatic spread of tumors originating in the stomach, distal esophagus, and thyroid. Double-contrast radiographs of the esophagus showed discontinuous submucosal extension and multiple polypoid masses.

The bowel habit of young children.

The bowel habit of 350 preschool children from a single general practice was studied. Eighty five per cent of 1 to 4 year olds eating a predominantly low fibre diet opened their bowels once or twice a day and 96% of the children fell within the range of three times a day to every other day. At all ages most children produced soft stools of about 25 ml volume. Mean intestinal transit time of 35 (10%) randomly selected children was 33 hours. There is a significant correlation between infrequency of bowel action, longer transit time, hard stools, and the passage of blood.

[Radiation-induced vasculopathy of the carotid artery and vertebral artery].

The article reports on a case of radiation-induced vasculopathy of the vessels of the head and neck causing a transitory ischaemic attack 14 years after primary radiation of a squamous cell carcinoma. The correlation of the radiation-induced vasculopathy with regard to applied radiation dose and time latency is discussed on the basis of published references.

Aortography↗

[Sonographic image of cholesterolosis of the gallbladder].

Cholesterolosis is the most frequent cause of polypous space-occupying growths of the gall bladder. Cholesterol polyps are visualised in sonography as usually multiple growths of 2-10 mm size, with abundant echoes and without shadows. The disease pattern is discussed on the basis of 8 sonographic images.

Insect immunity. Attacins, a family of antibacterial proteins from Hyalophora cecropia.

Six closely related antibacterial proteins, attacins A-F, were isolated from the hemolymph of immunized pupae of the Cecropia moth, Hyalophora cecropia. Chromatofocusing separated attacins A-F, with isoelectric points between 5.7 and 8.3. Immunological experiments show that the attacins constitute antibacterially active forms of the previously isolated inducible immune protein P5. Their mol. wts., 20-23 K, are similar to that of protein P5, but significantly lower than 28 K found for preP5 synthesized in vitro (see accompanying paper). The six attacins can be divided into two groups according to their amino acid composition and amino-terminal sequences, attacins A-D constitute a basic group and attacins E and F an acidic one. Within each group the forms are very similar. The attacins efficiently killed Escherichia coli and two other Gram-negative bacteria isolated from the gut of a silk worm but they did not act on other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria tested. Only growing cells of E. coli were attacked; cells suspended in phosphate buffer were inert. Besides the cecropins and lysozyme, the attacins represent a third class of antibacterial proteins in the humoral immune system of H. cecropia.

Solid-phase synthesis of cecropin A and related peptides.

Cecropin A, a 37-residue antibacterial peptide amide, was synthesized by the solid-phase method. It was shown to be homogeneous and totally indistinguishable from natural cecropin A by chemical and physical criteria, as well as by its antibacterial activity against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. The synthetic material was also used to establish unambiguously that the carboxyl-terminal blocking group of natural cecropin A is a primary amide as tentatively proposed earlier. The role of the amino terminus of cecropin A in antibacterial activity was investigated by the synthesis of two analogs.
