DES induced sperm destruction in Lakeview hamsters.

DES toxicity on sperm production after five consecutive sublethal i.p. injections of 8, 40 and 200 mg/kg was investigated in Lakeview hamsters. Testis weight, caudal sperm number, sperm morphology and body weight were monitored at week 1, 4 and 10 after treatment. DES doses of 8 mg/kg or above caused complete destruction of caudal sperm and reduced testes size to almost 10% of control within 10 weeks. Some sperm production resumed after the 8 mg/kg dose at the 10th week but more than half of these cells were abnormal in shape. Body weights remained almost stable for the first 4 weeks and then increased gradually by 25% at the 10th week.

Thoracoplasty with intercostal myoplasty for closure of an empyema cavity and bronchopleural fistula.

Intercostal myoplasty with thoracoplasty was performed in 42 patients with tubercular and bacterial empyema, after the failure of conventional therapy with antibiotics, antitubercular drugs and closed drainage. In the 18 cases with bronchopleural fistula, this was closed and the drainage tube was removed after 23 to 51 days. The procedure was well-tolerated by all the patients, and is safe and effective in patients with chronic empyema with or without bronchopleural fistula where resectional surgery or decortication is not possible due to extensive bilateral disease or low cardiorespiratory reserve. Successful ligation and closure of bronchopleural fistula without any mortality was a unique feature of this procedure.

Evaluation of certain tranquillisers and sedative premedications on the safety index of volatile anaesthetics.

Safety index (S.I.) of ether, chloroform and halothane was determined in mice following premedication with chloral hydrate, phenobarbitone, diazepam and trifluoperazine given alone or in combination with atropine or hyoscine. The S.I. of ether was significantly raised by chloral hydrate and phenobarbitone when combined with atropine while trifluoperazine in combination with atropine or hyoscine lowered it. The S.I. of chloroform and halothane was raised by chloral hydrate, phenobarbitone and diazepam. The S.I. raising effects were augmented in chloroform anaesthesia and reduced in cases of halothane (except diazepam-hyoscine) when these premedications were combined with atropine or hyoscine.

Mycotic salpingitis in a Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

An adult female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) was received for postmortem examination. Necropsy revealed the presence of white to grayish nodules 2-5 mm in diameter on the serosal surface of the oviduct. Aspergillus flavus was isolated from these nodules in pure culture. Histologically, these nodules were medium to large granulomatous lesions in serosa and the muscular wall of the oviduct. The lesions contained a large central necrotic core surrounded by giant cells, macrophages, and mononuclear cells. Similar cells in addition to heterophils also infiltrated the serosa, muscular layer, submucosa, and mucosa to varying degrees. Branched septate hyphae predominantly invaded the central caseous mass and to some extent invaded the surrounding areas of the nodules.

Multiple neoplasms of the salivary gland and the lung.

We describe a patient who presented with Warthin's tumour of the salivary gland which was followed by a bronchial carcinoid and subsequently by a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Such a presentation of three neoplasms in an individual is an uncommon occurrence.
