Germination of unactivated spores of Bacillus cereus T. Effect of preincubation with L-alanine or inosine on the subsequent germination.

Heat-activated spores of Bacillus cereus T germinate rapidly in the presence of L-alanine alone or inosine alone. In contrast, unactivated spores can not germinate in the presence of either germinant alone but rapidly in the presence of both germinants. The highest level of cooperative action of L-alanine and inosine on the germination was observed when they were present in a ratio 1:1. Preincubations of unactivated spores with L-alanine or inosine had opposite effects on the subsequent germination in the presence of both germinants: preincubation with L-alanine stimulated the initiation of subsequent germination, while preincubation with inosine inhibited it. These results suggest that germination of unactivated spores initiated by L-alanine and inosine includes two steps, the first initiated by L-alanine and the second prompted by inosine. The effect of preincubation of unactivated spores with L-alanine was not diminished by washings. The pH dependence of the preincubation of unactivated spores was not so marked as that of the subsequent germination in the presence of inosine.

Syphilis and its cardiovascular complications in the elderly.

The prevalence of syphilis and its cardiovascular complications were investigated in the living population more than 60 years of age. The prevalence of positive serologic test for syphilis (STS) were 16.9% (124/736) in males and 17.1% (236/1380) in females, which were not statistically different. Aortic regurgitation (AR) was significantly more frequent in those with positive STS (9.68% in males, 5.08% in females) compared with negative STS (0.98% in males, 1.75% in females) in both sexes (p less than 0.01) and it was marked in males. AR with positive STS had a significantly lower minimal blood pressure than AR with negative STS (p less than 0.05). Calcifications in the ascending aorta were noticed in 5 out of 24 syphilitic AR. Myocardial infarctions were almost equally found among those with positive STS (1.67%) and negative STS (1.65%), and 2 out of 6 syphilitic cases were complicated by AR. The measurement of the aortic width was not valuable for the diagnosis of uncomplicated syphilitic aortitis.

[Liver dye metabolism and constitutional indocyanine green retention syndrome in Japan (author's transl)].

Some recent studies from Japan on liver dye metabolism are presented. Special attention has been given to 17 cases of constitutional indocyamine green retention syndrome. This syndrome consists of marked ICG-retention and normal BSP excretion. Other liver function tests such as enzymes or serum fractions are normal. In liver biopsy specimens there are no significant abnormal findings. The cause of the syndrome is still unknown but disturbance of passage through the membrane is considered. So far, this syndrome has only been noted in Japan.

The primary nucleotide sequence of nuclear U-2 ribonucleic acid. The 5'-terminal portion of the molecule.

The nuclear U-2 RNA which is highly modified (Reddy, R., Ro Choi, T.S., Henning, D., Shibata, H., Choi, Y.C., and Busch H. (1972) J. Biol. Chem. 247, 7245-7250) contains 13 pseudouridylic acid residues, 10 2'-O-methylated nucleotides and two modified bases including N-2,2, 7-trimethyl guanylic acid in its 5'-terminal portion (69 nucleotides). With the determination of this sequence and its overlap with the 3' portion of the molecule (nucleotides 70 to 196), the over-all nucleotide sequence of this RNA is:(see article). The concentration of modified nucleotides in its 5' portion is greater than for any RNA sequenced thus far.
