In well defined liver diseases in 69 alcoholics and in 71 patients without history of alcoholism the enzymatic findings were compared. Also a group of 43 alcoholics with praedelirium or delirium tremens were examined. In steatosis due to alcohol, the average of GGTP (145 U/l) attains values two times higher than in comparable cases of non-alcoholic origin (73 U/l). In cirrhotics with alcoholism, the average GGTP levels (477 U/l) exceed those obtained in patients with cirrhosis of other origin (110 U/l), four times more. Similar or higher GGTP values were found only in primary biliary cirrhosis. After a period of at least 3 months of abstinence, GGTP values had decreased (to 68 U/l) in the average). The highest values of GGTP were found in acute alcoholic hepatitis and in chronic alcoholics with praedelirium or delirium tremens. GGTP accords diagnostic hints in comparison with other enzymes, as shown by a quotient of GGTP-GPT. GGTP is very helpful for differentiation and long time observation of alcoholic liver disease, especially with regards controlling abstinence of alcohol.

1. The acid-base balance (pH, pCO2 and HCO-3) of 23 normal subjects was determined both in arterialized capillary blood and in the CSF. 2. Statistically significant correlations (determined by means of Spearman's rank correlation) were found between: pCO2 in arterialized blood and CSF pH (Rs=--0.372, p is less than 0.05), pCO2 in the CSF and CSF pH (Rs=--0.421, p is less than 0.05), HCO-3 in the CSF and in arterialized blood (Rs=0.623, p is less than 0.05), blood pH and CSF pH (Rs=0.485, p is less than 0.025), pCO2 in the CSF and HCO-3 in the CSF (Rs=0.559, p is less than 0.005). 3. The regulatory mechanisms of the CSF acid-base balance in normal subjects and also in patients with extra-neural or CNS disturbances are discussed.
1. An investigation was carried out on 40 normal subjects of the acid-base balance in arterialized capillary blood and in the CSF (17 cisternal and 23 lumbar samples). The pH value was 7.324 in the cisternal CSF and 7.317 in the lumbar CSF, giving a difference of 0.007. The respective pCO2 values were 45.0 mm Hg and 45.9 mm Hg. The HCO3-minus value was 21.8 mMol/l, both in the cisternal and the lumbar CSF. 2. A comparison of the cisternal and lumbar CSF samples by means of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Test did not show any significant differences. 3. Neither of the groups showed a statistically significant dependence on age or sex. 4. Comparative studies by several authors of the acid-base balance in the cisternal and lumbar CSF are mentioned and discussed with reference to the present results.
The authors describe two patients suffering from cancer accompanied with paraneoplastic skin disorders (bullous pemphigoid, dermatomyositis). Before the diagnosis of stomach cancer was obtained by X-ray examination, the IgM-level was found lower than in normal persons. The value of the IgM-estimation in the serum seems to be high in the diagnosis of tumours. Other causes of the decreased IgM-level than tumours and paraneoplastic disorders of the skin were not found.

Twenty women after menopause were submitted to substitution treatment with a biphasic hormone combination (Cyclacur¿). Nine of these had undergone hysterectomy + ovarectomy. Through 11 days each of the women was administered a daily dose of 2 mg estradiol-valerianate as estrogen. Subsequently, for another 10 days each was given the identical dose of estrogen plus 0.5 mg DL-norgestrel as gestagen. Upon this followed an intermission of 7 days without any medication. After 1 cycle of placebo, 7 cycles of medication were followed by 1 cycle of placebo again with regular controls. Climacteric signs and symptoms were eliminated entirely. In those women without hysterectomy withdrawal-menorrhagia occurred promptly 2--3 days after discontinuing medication. During the entire period of investigation there was no significant change in serum lipids, blood sugar values, or serum enzyme tests used as parameter of hepatic function. As far as hematology is concerned there was a moderate rise of hematocrit. No change of serum protein-bound iodine was observed.

The term 'short test' (Kurztest) can signify a number of diverse concepts. An attempt was made to arrange these concepts systematically. This may have practical significance, as short tests in psychopathology assume growing importance and the terminology for purposes of communication will become more differentiated and precise. Short tests need not be of lower quality than normal procedures. On the contrary, particularly in the area of psychopathology, short tests can have a higher validity and reliability.
