None of the betamimetics have a exclusively tocolytic effect. By stimulating the cardiovascular beta-receptor, they also cause a substantial increase in the heart rate and a decrease in blood pressure. We administered 4--5 micrograms/min of Fenoterol to 13 patients during the first stage of labour. This led to complete inhibition of labour. To reduce cardiac side effects, a primarily cardiac beta-blocker (5 mg Atenolol or 20 mg Metoprolol) was also given. The maternal and fetal heart rates were measured by ECG and by fetal scalp-electrode, respectively. The fetal heart rate remained largely unchanged, both during the Fenoterol infusion as well as during the additional administration of the beta-blocker. The maternal heart rate, which increased under the influence of the Fenoterol, fell (p less than or equal to 0.01) but did not return to normal. In all cases the beta-blockade led to a brief increase in uterine activity.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia may present as a primary congenital disorder as well as a secondary form due to numerous underlying diseases. Endoscopically, whitish swollen tips of the villi are fairly characteristic; histologically, dilatation of the lymphatics can be demonstrated. By means of electron microscopy dilated intercellular spaces with aggregation of protein precipitations as well as ectatic lymph vessels with abnormal structure are found. Possible relations to the pathomechanism are discussed.
Amyloidosis of the gastrointestinal tract can mimic a variety of different conditions. The symptoms and findings depend upon the localization and extent of the amyloid deposits. This report concerns a 53-year-old female patient with secondary amyloidosis in the presence of a plasmocytoma, in whom, at endoscopy, petechial mucosal suggillation were observed in the distal colon. The cause of the mucosal petechiae were probably vascular changes induced by deposits of amyloid.

1. Acetylcholine (ACh) sensitivity was determined in slow muscle fibres of Rana temporaria by ionophoretic application of ACh from high resistance micropipettes. 2. The amplitude of ACh responses decreased with the third power of the distance between fibre surface and tip of the pipette; latency and time-to-peak of ACh responses increased with the second power of the distance. 3. ACh sensitivity values obtained by application of ACh at short distance (approx. 10 micrometers) were generally of the order of 150 mV/nC, but larger values (greater than 1000 mV/nC) pipette the ACh response was often completely lost or markedly reduced in amplitude. The latency of ACh responses was generally longer, but occasionally as short as observed in twitch fibres; time-to-peak and rate of decay were always longer than in twitch fibres. 4. It is concluded that ACh sensitive membrane areas in slow muscle fibres are generally of small diameter. There sensitivity is, however, similar to that of junctional areas in twitch muscle fibres.
In a double-blind within-patient clinical trial in psoriasis, budesonide 0.025% ointment has been shown to be at least as efficient as betamethasone-17-valerate 0.1% ointment. A lower concentration of budesonide ointment, 0.01%, was used for 4 weeks of maintenance treatment. This concentration controlled residual symptoms well in a majority of the patients, thirty-two in number.

Twenty-two patients treated non-operatively for chondromalacia patellae were followed up after an average of 5.7 years in order to evaluate the effect of abnormal patellofemoral biomechanics on the natural history of the symptoms. Clinical and radiological investigation revealed 15 patients with signs of malalignment, femoral trochlear dysplasia or excessive lateral pressure syndrome, 3 patients with marginal signs of malalignment and 4 patients with no demonstrable abnormalities. A statistically significant difference in the evolution of symptoms between the normal and the abnormal group is demonstrated, 14 out of 15 in the latter group having unchanged or worsened symptoms. The stage of chondromalacia change as judged arthrographically at the beginning of the observation period did not influence the clinical outcome.
By means of histochemical methods it could be shown, that the human blood contains three different types of cells with phenoloxidase. The phenoloxidase activity of the large cells is methanol resistant. The cells are considered to be hematopoietic stem cells. The medium size cells are granulocytes, while the small cells are lymphocytes.
In this investigation it could be shown that of three different POZ of the human blood the large and the medium large cells also contained peroxidase activity. It is postulated, that the phenoloxidase containing cells of blood and connective tissue of the organism are a functionally unit in the defense system.
