[Tissue reaction with platinum-iridium insulated electrodes (author's transl)].

Pt-Ir-electrodes were coated with different insulations. Some of the insulations proved to be highly cytotoxic. Pt-Ir (9:1) electrodes coated with "PYRE-M.L." were easy to handle and did not show any cytotoxic effects. A change of electric impedance was found when the voltage was raised and platinum had changed the surface of the cathode.

A study of otoconia of normal mice and shaker mice.

Otoconia from the maculae of the utricule and the saccule of normal mice and shaker mice have been examined by means of polarizing microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray dispersive analysis was used to determine the elements present in the crystals. The otoconia were found to be negative birefringent crystals. They are among the largest crystals found in mammalian tissues, many being 30-50 microns in length and 109-20 microns in diameter. The majority were calcite (calcium carbonate) crystals. Some crystals had a different morphological appearance and contained phosphorus (phosphate compound) as well as calcium. The phosphate content was much less and sometimes absent from utricular otoconia of shaker mice.

[Considerations about methods to test the effectiveness of anti-vertiginous drugs (author's transl)].

The testing by different methods of the effectiveness of three anti-vertiginous drugs (Diphenhydramine, L-Hyoscyamine, and PB 795) has also yielded interesting results concerning the benefit-cost ratio of the methods employed. Sustained thermal stimulation enables better observation of the kind of effect produced by a drug on the nystagmus, the onset and development of this effect, than repeated rotatory stimuli. From among methods employed in testing motion-sickness symptoms the measuring of perspiration on a definite area of the forehead has proved simplest and most reliable. Habituation is negligible, whereas it is marked during analysis of subjective symptoms and when psycho-galvanic skin reflexes are measured. Diphenhydramin proved more effective than the other drugs tested. Its rapid effect in the form of intravenous injection makes it very suitable for emergency situations such as the treatment of Menière's attack. L-Hyoscyamin is suitable when sedation is undesirable. PB 795, a anti-depressant is effective but produces disturbance of accommodation as a side effect, so that it appears unsuitable for treating motion-sickness.

Exercise 201thallium myocardial scans in patients with disease limited to the secondary branches of the left coronary system.

Coronary disease (greater than or equal to 50% narrowing) confined to only the diagonal branch of the left anterior descending artery or to the marginal branch of the left circumflex artery, or both, is uncommon. Only 19 patients with disease as defined above were identified in a group of 1000 consecutive patients with an angiographic diagnosis of coronary heart disease. All 19 patients were studied because of angina pectoris and all underwent stress myocardial perfusion scintigraphy with 201Tl (201thallium) during maximal treadmill exercise testing (exercise electrocardiogram: E/ECG). Ten patients (52%) had positive E/ECG's; seven patients (36%) had positive 201Tl and 13 patients (68%) had one or both tests positive. In 12 patients, the diseased branch was small, i.e. it supplied a comparatively small portion of myocardium, and in seven patients it was determined to be large. The 201Tl test results were positive in four out of seven patients (57%) with large diseased branches, as compared with three out of 12 (25%) with small diseased branches (p: NS). Also, three out of seven patients (42%) with large diseased branches had positive E/ECG's as compared with seven out of 12 patients (58%) with small diseased branches (p: NS). Patients with branch disease may present with typical angina pectoris, however, they are rare and thus not likely to account for the majority of false-negative 201Tl test results among symptomatic patients with CHD. Approximately one-third of the patients with branch disease have positive 201Tl test results, one-half have positive E/ECG's, and in two-thirds, one or both tests are positive.

[The effect of bencyclane, flunarizine and naftidrofuryl on a calorically induced long time nystagmus (author's transl)].

The method of a calorically induced long time stimulation is shown. Appr. 15 minutes after begin fo stimulation a nystagmus plateau can be observed. We used this plateau to demonstrate the effects of three cerebral vasoactive drugs--Bencyclane, Flunarizine and Naftidrofuryl-Hydrogenoxalate in a randomized double blind study. All of them depressed the nystagmus significantly. Naftidrofuryl by 38.4 +/- 4.6%, Flunarizine by 31 +/- 4.5% and Bencyclane by 25.1 +/- 3.8%. The depressing mechanism of Flunarizine is partly due to sedation.

[Pituitary hormone secretion induced by optokinetic stimulation (author's transl)].

A slight optokinetic stimulation induces a significant increase of serum levels of antidiuretic hormone 1,1 +/- 0.8 pg/ml (mean +/- SD) to 3,3 +/- 1,9 pg/ml (mean +/- SD). Serum levels of gGH and cortisol remain unchanged, whereas serum prolactin levels decrease slightly. The ADH secretion seems to be the most sensitive hormonal parameter of the stimulation of the vestibular nuclei induced either by the optokinetic stimulation or by the Coriolis effect.

[The ultrastructure of the neointima of arterial prostheses made of lyophilized human dura. Long-term results in dogs (author's transl)].

Five arterial prostheses made of lyophilized human dura (LHD) were inserted into dogs and removed after 4, 5 1/2, 13, 43, and 46 months to be studied with the electron microscope. The neointima of all grafts consisted of pseudo-endothelial cells, fibrocytes, and collagen fibrils. Additionally, 43 and 46 months after implantation smooth muscle cells and elastic microfibrils were present. Thus, the composition of the neointima was substantially identical with that of the neointima of synthetic arterial grafts and collagen-fabric ones. The clinical application of arterial prostheses of LHD, however, seems at present too early because of degenerative changes in the walls of those grafts which remained nearly 4 years in the dogs.

Neuronal activity in the lateral vestibular nucleus of the cat. V. Topographical distribution of inhibitory effects mediated by the spino-olivocerebellar pathway.

The spatial distribution of inhibitory effects mediated by spinoolivocerebellar pathways and evoked by stimulation of the FRA was studied in Deiters' nucleus by intracellular recordings and extracellular measurements of positive field potentials. At a geven recording site individual nerves greatly varied in their effectiveness: Q and Saph, Tib and FDL were usually the most effective, while GS had very little effect. When comparing several recording sites, various patterns of dominating and nondominating nerves were found, resulting in a somewhat patchy distribution of responses. The results were supported by intracellular recordings, which showed that CF-mediated IPSPs can be evoked from a limited number of nerves only. The findings show that a discriminative pattern exists in the FRA-evoked spino-olivocerebellar-mediated inhibition. In addition, Deiters neurones were found in which the inhibition was evoked from a large number of fore- and hindlimb nerves. Such a generalized inhibitory pattern may be involved in interlimb coordination during locomotion.
