Bile-induced chronic gastric ulcer in swine with excised oxyntic gland area.

After excision of the oxyntic gland area in seven miniature pigs and cholecystogastrostomy in six of them, two developed chronic gastric ulcers in the gastric remnant. No parietal cells were found in the two pigs with ulcers, whereas small areas with polypoid oxyntic mucosa were found in four pigs without ulcer. The study indicates that bile-induced chronic gastric ulcer can occur in the pig despite the absence of oxyntic cells.

The occurrence of salmonella in waste water from Danish slaughterhouses. A quantitative study.

In waste water from 11 slaughterhouses, the occurrence of salmonellas were followed continually during a whole week. Thirty-eight samples out of 66 were contaminated. The mean concentrations of salmonellas varied between 0.9 and 668 per 100 ml. Only 4 different serotypes were found viz., S. agona, S. indiana, S. senftenberg, and S. typhimurium. This distribution of serotypes is incompatible with epidemiological data from humans, animals, and feed-stuffs. It is suggested that certain serotypes of Salmonella may become established in sewage systems of slaughterhouses or that propagation of salmonellas may take place in the sewer rats. In one particular plant, large numbers of S. senftenberg were found during the whole period of sampling. It is pointed out that discharge of such heavily polluted waste water into water courses may constitute a public health hazard if the recipient is used for irrigation of vegetables or pastures.

Liver biopsy in PUVA-treated patients.

Seventy-five liver biopsies were performed in 30 psoriatics and 5 patients with mycosis fungoides undergoing treatment with photochemotherapy with 8-methoxypsoralen and UVA light. All patients had pre- and post-PUVA biopsies, the latter after one year. Five psoriatics had a further biopsy after 2 1/2 years of treatment. No statistically significant differences were found between biopsies taken before and after treatment.

Acquired cutis laxa (generalized elastolysis): light and electron microscopic studies.

The case is described of a 44-year-old man with acquired cutis laxa. The primary clinical manifestation was an erythema of the chest. Gradually there developed persistent circumscribed lesions in other areas of the skin, spreading into large erythematous plaques with loose skin. Slight restrictive ventilatory insufficiency, elongation of the vocal cord and diverticulosis of the colon were also found, indicating a chronic and widespread disorder. Skin biopsies showed diminution and degeneration of the elastic fibres. The light-microscopic features were subdivided in relation to the various skin manifestations. Ultrastructure of the skin showed various amounts of electron-dense, amorphous material and loosely bound microfibrils in and around elastic and collagen fibres as well as some microfibrils with knobs in the interfibrouer, were found normal. It is suggested that the first changes in the elastic fibres induced an inflammatory response and mild mucinous changes of the collagen fibres. Furthermore elastic fibres seemed to be replaced by newly formed collagen.

T- and B-cells and IgE in mycosis fungoides.

The role of T- and B-lymphocytes and serum IgE was studied in 22 patients with mycosis fungoides. The distribution of B-cells in peripheral blood was normal, while the mean percentage of T-cells was significantly lower than in 14 healthy controls. Four patients with mycosis fungoides in stages I to IV had a highly elevated serum IgE, while serum IgE in remaining patients was slightly elevated, normal, or subnormal. The mean serum IgE level was not significantly elevated. Our results tend to show that a reduced ability to react with cellular immunity may be an important factor in mycosis fungoides. This may have therapeutic aspects.

Histopathologic, stereologic, epidemiologic, and clinical parameters in the prognostic evaluation of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic indicators that could assist in a more precise selection of patients with oral cancer for differentiated therapy would be clinically valuable. METHODS: A consecutive series of 161 cases of intraoral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) occurring during a 5-year period in a population of 1.4 million inhabitants, was evaluated by histopathologic (the modified classification of Jakobsson et al.), stereologic, clinical, and epidemiologic parameters and the serum markers hemoglobin and rhesus blood group. RESULTS: Univariate analysis established a significant prognostic value in terms of cause-specific survival for T stage (P < .0001), stage (P < .0001), maximum tumor diameter (P < .0001), N stage (N+/NO) (P < .0001), alcohol consumption (P = .03), stereologic estimates of nuclear volume (P = .04), and the histomorphologic parameters mode of invasion (P = .001), pattern (P = .01), vascular invasion (P = .02), depth (P = .006), and mean histologic score. Tobacco consumption was borderline significant (P = .055). A multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard analysis showed that both clinical (stage, P < .0001; size, P = .0027), epidemiologic (tobacco consumption, P = .0054), morphohistopathologic (mode of invasion P < .0001), and stereologic (nuclear volume, P = .0010) parameters had an independent significant effect on survival. Inversely, the mean histologic score had no prognostic value. From the final regression model prognostic forecasts were calculated. Twelve patients (25%) with stage I disease had unfavorable histologic and stereologic parameters. The observed survival (+/- 1 standard error of the estimate) for these patients was 33% +/- 18%. The observed survival for stage I patients with more favorable histologic and stereologic characteristics (n = 36) was 76% +/- 8%. CONCLUSION: The use of a combination of clinical, histologic, epidemiologic, and stereologic parameters will assist the design of treatment strategies for intraoral SCC.

Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in formalin-fixed endometrial tissue.

Formalin-fixed tissue biopsies from 29 women with the histological diagnosis of severe endometritis were examined for chlamydial antigen by fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal chlamydial antibodies (SYVA) technique; 15 (52%) were positive. In nine patients also samples for isolation of Chlamydia trachomatis by cell-culture technique were obtained peroperatively; seven were culture-positive. In all these patients fluorescent chlamydial antigen was detected, whereas the two culture-negative patients had no such antigen. The technique presented makes it possible to examine series of formalin-fixed endometrical biopsies to evaluate the significance of C. trachomatis being etiologic agent in endometritis in females.

Intracutaneous injection of lysophosphatidylcholine induces skin inflammation and accumulation of leukocytes.

Various cell stimuli act through activation of phospholipase A2, which hydrolyses fatty acids from membrane phospholipids, resulting in the formation of fatty acids and lysophospholipids. One of the lysophospholipid classes, lysophosphatidylcholine, is a chemoattractant for monocytes and T-lymphocytes and induces the expression of adhesion molecules on cultured endothelial cells. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether lysophosphatidylcholine possesses proinflammatory properties in vivo. This was assessed clinically and histologically by intracutaneous injection of 200-800 nmol lysophosphatidylcholine in healthy volunteers. Lysophosphatidylcholine elicited a dose- and time-dependent local erythema and oedema. The erythema disappeared within 4 h, while the induration lasted for up to 48 h. HE-stained biopsies taken after 24 h showed a leukocytoclastic vasculitis in 2 of the 6 subjects. Microscopic examination of immunohistochemically stained biopsies taken 24 h after the injection showed a significant increase in the number of T-lymphocytes, monocytes and neutrophils, whereas the number of Langerhans' cells was unchanged after lysophosphatidylcholine injection. In addition, the number of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 and -3-positive cells was increased approximately 3-fold after injection of lysophosphatidylcholine. In conclusion, the phospholipase A2 hydrolysis product lysophosphatidylcholine can induce erythema, oedema, a mixed cellular infiltrate and the expression of adhesion molecules.

Malignant degeneration in cryptorchid testes. A report of two cases.

In two patients with cryptorchism orchidectomy was performed because of testicular atrophy and torsion respectively. From the macroscopic appearance malignancy was not expected in either of the cases, but histological examination showed invasive carcinoma. This indicates that biopsies should be taken whenever operations are performed on cryptorchid testes, and it may be of importance to biopt all cryptorchid testes at a certain age.
