Estimation of economic loss associated with anaplasmosis in California beef cattle.

On the basis of questionnaire surveys and personal interviews with veterinarians, ranchers, and livestock farm advisors, the seriousness of anaplasmosis in California was determined. In 1976, the economic loss due to anaplasmosis in the study sample of beef cattle was $2,203,150. When inferences were made from the sample population to include the whole population of beef cattle, this loss was estimated to be $5,244,319. These values were in contrast to a farm advisors' estimate of $11 million loss due to anaplasmosis, which was included in a total estimated loss of $300 million due to all livestock diseases of economic importance in California. It appeared that anaplasmosis, although having a substantial economic impact in California, is not as economically devastating as it was once thought to be. It was concluded that private programs currently in use (vaccination and treatment) are sufficient to control anaplasmosis.

Paratuberculosis in cattle and free-living exotic deer.

Paratuberculosis was studied among dairy cows and exotic deer that shared grazing areas at Point Reyes National Seashore, California. Of the 10 dairy herds tested, 5 (50%) were infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (based on results of fecal culture). Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was cultured from 9 (8.7%) of the 103 bovine fecal samples and from 4 (3.9%) of the 103 bovine rectal mucosa scapings tested. Of 89 fecal samples from 52 axis deer (Axis axis) and 37 fallow deer (Dama dama), 5 (9.6%) and 3 (8.1%), respectively, contained M paratuberculosis. Culture of intestinal necropsy samples from the same deer indicated that 3 (5.8%) of the axis deer and 2 (5.4%) of the fallow deer were infected with M paratuberculosis. The cows were tested for serum antibodies by the complement-fixation test and by radioimmunoassay. Of 95 sera tested by complement fixation, 15 (15.8%) were positive, as were 15 (14.7%) of 102 sera tested by radioimmunoassay. Culture results and serologic test results were compared on a herd basis.

Antibodies to Clostridium botulinum toxins in free-living birds and mammals.

Naturally-occuring antibodies against Clostridium botulinum toxins were found in Cathartes aura (turkey vultures), Canis latrans (coyotes) and Corvus brachyrhynchos (crows) by the passive hemagglutination (PHA) test and verified by the serum neutralization (SN) test. The prevalence of IHA antibodies was 18 of 20 vultures (90%), 5 of 12 crows (42%) and 25 to 110 coyotes (23%). Vultures and coyotes were seropositive by the PHA test against A, B, C, D, and F toxins. The highest antibody titer 1:8192 was in vulture serum against type C. In descending order, the highest antibody levels were against type C, D, F, E, A and B toxins.

[Long-term follow-up of lung function parameters in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treated with prednisone and azathioprin or d-penicillamine (author's transl)].

The prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is poor, it amounts to 4-6 years (after beginning of the symptoms). Spontaneous remissions are very rare, the corticosteroid monotherapy shows a certain success in only 11-16-20% of the cases. Therefore, since 1970 we carry out a combined therapy (see above); the results, confirmed by pulmonary function tets (vital capacity, static compliance, pO2 at rest and after exercise) will be presented. In summary: (1) Azathioprin and Prednisone: After a treatment of 2 years: 6 patients improved, 2 deteriorated, 3 died; the corresponding figures after 4 years were 6/1/4, after 6 years 3/-/5, after 8 years 2/-/3; (2) D-Penicillamine and Prednisone: After 2 years 3/2/4, 1 unchanged; after 4 years 1/-/4, 1 unchanged. The results of the therapy are discussed especially regarding prognosis of the disease and used drugs.

Lung lesions at slaughter: associations to factors in the pig herd.

A survey was made of available data files to gain a preliminary insight into the association between environmental factors and the prevalence at slaughter of lung lesions. Herd size was the factor that showed the most predominant association with the prevalence of lung lesions. This was largely independent of the recruitment system for weanlings. There was a moderate trend toward positive association between the prevalence of lung lesions and the prevalence of other lesions. Lung lesions were weakly but significantly associated with the occurrence of infectious diarrhoea in the herd. The investigation demonstrated the feasibility of and the need for continuous epidemiological studies to identify disease determinants. Studies of the nature reported here makes it possible to define essential health factors with an accuracy that could never be achieved through clinical observations in a few herds.

Assay methods for Clostridium perfringens type A enterotoxin.

Enterotoxin produced by a sporulating culture of Clostridium perfringens type A NCTC 8798 was purified to a level of 3,500 mouse mean lethal doses per mg of nitrogen. High-titer sera were obtained from rabbits injected with enterotoxin and used to compare the sensitivity of serological tests and bioassays for C. perfringens enterotoxin. Reversed passive hemagglutination was by far the most sensitive test, followed by microslide diffusion, single gel diffusion and electroimmunodiffusion, guinea pig skin test, mouse test, and rabbit ileal loop test.

Initiation of staphylococcal growth in laboratory media.

The effects of pH and NaCl concentration on the probability of aerobic growth initiation in Brain Heart Infusion broth at 30 C by five staphylococcal strains producing enterotoxins A, B, C, and D were studied in a factorial design experiment. Statistical analysis of the data indicated: (i) significant effects of pH, NaCl, and strain on the probability of growth; (ii) diverse effects of NaCl with various pH levels and strains; (iii) essentially a linear relationship between NaCl concentration and probability of growth initiation when data for all strains were pooled; (iv) the relationship between NaCl concentration and probability of growth initiation varies from linear to sigmoid, depending on the pH of the broth, when the statistically untreated (raw) data are plotted for each strain. Equations were derived which relate the decimal reductions of the number of cells of a staphylococcal population to the concentration of NaCl and pH of broth to which the population was exposed. From the equations, the probability that one cell is capable of initiating growth can be calculated. The impact of these types of studies on the development of realistic staphylococcal standards in foods is discussed.
