[Influence of diazepam and phenytoin on penicillin-induced cerebral convulsions (author's transl)].

The effects of diazepam and phenytoin on penicillin-induced EEG changes and convulsions were studied in 32 rabbits. EEG changes and convulsions were elicited by 2.4 g/kg benzylpenicillin i.v. over 50 min. The dosages of the anticonvulsants were 1, 5 and 10 mg of diazepam and 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg of phenytoin. The qualitative and semiquantitative evaluation of the electroencephalograms revealed no reduction of spike frequency or spike amplitude for either of the two drugs. However, in contrast to phenytoin, diazepam was highly effective in preventing the development of generalized convulsions. None of the 12 diazepam-treated animals developed a convulsion, whereas in most of the phenytoin treated animals and in most of the controls generalized convulsions appeared. The results suggest that diazepam should be used in the treatment of penicillin-encephalopathy.

[Catamnestic studies of headache patients with pathological EEG (author's transl)].

In 53 patients, consulting for headache of different types, a pathological EEG had been observed several years ago; at this time, a neurological or medical origin of the bio electric abnormalities could not be found. These patients (average age: 32.4 y.) were reexamined systematically after an average delay of 3 years. Generally, one observes a clear improvement or a normalization of the EEG and the clinical state. In 1/9 only of the population the EEG-abnormalities persisted. All these patients belonged to a subgroup, where certain complicating factors (cerebral-organic or general) could be specified. No brain tumour had developed meanwhile. The authors conclude: A pathological EEG in the context of headache does not obligatory indicate bad prognosis.

[The effect of bencyclan on shear induced platelet aggregation (author's transl)].

The platelet aggregation inhibiting effect of N-[3-(1-benzyl-cycloheptyloxy)-propyl]-N,N-dimethyl-amine (bencyclan, Fludilat) was studied by a new method for quantification of platelet aggregation in viscometric flow. In vitro-addition of bencyclan shows significant inhibition in a concentration of 1 mg/100 ml, total inhibition of platelet aggregation is found at a concentration of 5 mg/100 ml. Peroral application of bencyclan shows no significant effect on platelet aggregation. Intravenous application of bencyclan studied in three patients results in inhibition of platelet aggregation, however, no information about the duration of this platelet-inhibiting effect is yielded.
