In 100 patients a total of 171 PG determinations in the menstrual blood was performed under standardized conditions. The primary PGE1 and PGF2alpha were determined by RIA. The evaluation of the analysis of the sexual hormones resulted in a group with a biphasic cycle without dysmenorrhoea and a group with a biphasic cycle with dysmenorrhoea. Highly significant differences (p less than 0.01) were found in the PGF2alpha concentration in menstrual blood between a group of healthy women and one of patients with dysmenorrhoea. In dysmenorrhoea the ratio of the PGs investigated is shifted in favour of PGF2alpha. Indomethacin can decrease the PGF2alpha levels in dysmenorrhoea up to 15% (p less than 0.01). All treated patients reported that their conditions had improved. Five out of seven women were completely without any complaints.
Peripheral blood lymphocytes of 45 patients with colon-rectum disease and 30 healthy controls were tested in a simple rapid microagglutination test (PAL test) for cancer diagnosis. In 30 cancer patients 28 positive reactions were obtained. All healthy controls were negative. The 15 patients with benign or premalignant lesions showed 5 positive and 10 negative reactions. Results of the PAL test were about 90% accurate.

Following superior mesenteric artery occlusion and revascularization in dogs all animals died in a circulatory collapse state. However, pretreatment by aminoguanidine, the strong and specific inhibitor of diamine oxidase, accelerated the circulatory break-down significantly and increased the venous plasma histamine concentrattions up to levels which also in normal dogs are effective in the circulatory system. Furthermore, the haematocrit increased significantly more in the aminoguanidine-treated animals than in the dogs treated by saline. No changes in plasma diamine oxidase activity were observed in saline-treated animals during intestinal ischemia and following revascularization. In aminoguanidine-treated animals no enzymic activity could be measured. The results were interpreted by a protective role of intestinal diamine oxidase in intestinal ischemia. Enhancement of the enzymic activity in patients, for instance by heparin, may be helpful in mesenteric infarction disease.

To elucidate the reaction mechanism of the increased elimination rate of bilirubin in the blood of newborns under the influence of Eucalyptol, we performed a study on young mice. The following results were obtained: UDPGA-T activity is increased 33%, if measured with 4-MU as substrate after a single injection (i.p.) of Eucalyptol (0.3 mg/g body weight), with bilirubin as substrate the increase is 112%. UDPG-T activity increases 29%. The enhancement of enzyme activities can be inhibited by Actinomycin D (1 MUg/g body weight) 30% (bilirubin), 48% (4-MU) respectively in the case of UDPGA-T. Under cycloheximide (2 mug/g body weight) the increase of the activity of UDPGA-T is suppressed by 59% (bilirubin) or 99% (4-MU) as compared to the corresponding controls. No significant difference in the activity of UDPG-T by actinomycin or cycloheximide can be observed between the controls and the Eucalyptol-treated group. We conclude that the increase of enzyme activity of UDPGA-T is mainly due to enzyme induction, while in the case of UDPG-T activation of enzyme molecules might be the underlying mechanism. The effect of Eucalyptol on the bilirubin level in the blood of newborns is comparable to the effect of phenobarbital.

During intestinal ischemia in rabbits histamine concentration and diamine oxidase activity were altered in the intestinal wall and in the perfusate of mesenteric vessels. The results were interpreted as a histamine release and an increased catabolism of diamine oxidase. Thus, the combination of release of vasoactive histamine and partial elimination of a protective enzyme may contribute to the fatal outcome after mesenteric ischemia.

This report is a retrospective evaluation of 12 case histories. All patients had been subjected to laparotomy on suspicion of acute appendicitis. The operative situations seemed to corroborate clinical expectations: an inflamed ileocecal process was assumed to be a result of performation of a gangrenous appendicitis. In three patients a primary adenocarcinoma arising from the appendiceal base was the incidental histologic finding postoperatively. In three other patients this inflammatory-looking process was related to a cecal carcinoma. In six patients a carcinoma existed unrecognized as the basic disease, these patients being subjected to intra-abdominal drainage only or in connection with appendectomy. In five instances a fecal fistula was the main persisting symptom of postoperative morbidity, in one patient even as long as two years after laparotomy. The problem in diagnostic verification of the initially unidentified carcinoma is illustrated. Attention is directed towards avoiding a false feeling of security in the presence of inflammatory manifestations in the right lower abdominal quadrant, which may misleadingly suggest a ruptured appendix.

Elevated intraluminal pressure of rabbit small bowel induces a decrease of tissue pO2 of the bowel wall dependent on the applied pressure. After decompression local pO2 exceeds the initial pO2 values. While the i.v. application of 25 microgram/kg glucagon is not able to improve local oxygen supply of the distended bowel, local pO2 increases considerably after infusion of 7.5 ml/kg dextran 40. Decompression by operation or intestinal tube as well as application of dextran 40 are recommended in the treatment of ileus.
