The methodical fundaments as well as the technical solutions for a technique of the computerized analysis of non-invasively registered peripheral arterial pulse curves are demonstrated. Hereby a quantitative analysis of the pulse curves using new and significant evaluation parameters is performed as well as a reference to the probability diagnosis for the total estimation of the pulse curve is given. The technique is realised in form of a mobile microcomputer measuring place and allows an automatic registration, evaluation documentation and recording of rheograms and pulse oscillograms, respectively immediately at the patient's bed and is suited for a broad application in the angiological preliminary and special diagnostics.

A report is presented on a 30-year-old Ecuadorian and a 40-year-old Sicilian with ventricular neurocysticercosis. The disease was manifested as occlusive hydrocephalus with signs of acute augmentation of intracranial pressure requiring emergency ventricular drainage. Subsequently several cysts were removed from the ventricles of both patients by craniotomy. One of the patients was discharged and left for Ecuador after operation while the other received antiparasitic therapy with praziquantel; this did not, however, contribute to an improvement of the symptoms. The diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy of neurocysticercosis are discussed.
A method for the intraoperative detection of brain tumor propagation is described. Based on the well-known radiophosphorus test, a very sensitive semiconductor probe was tested in 16 brain tumor operations. With this miniaturized sensor, the beta-emission of 32P could be measured with a high topographical resolution. Especially in high-grade gliomas, in meningiomas and in metastases a good discrimination of normal and tumor-infiltrated tissue was possible. The perspectives of a technical improvement of this method and the application of more specific tumor markers are discussed.

Twenty-five cases of intervertebral disc herniation in young people between 15 and 25 years old are reported. They have been operated in the Neurosurgical Clinic of Basle between July 1978 and July 1982. The clinical and radiological findings, the operative procedure and the results are described. The postoperative courses were generally more complicated in the young than in a comparative group of elder patients. The importance of strict, restrictive indications for this operation is pointed out.

The typical CT-findings in lumbar disc herniations, spinal stenosis as well as tumors of the lumbar-sacral region are described. Difficulties in diagnosing recurrent hernias are discussed. We try to establish indications for an appropriate use of this new method instead of in addition to the more conventional neuroradiological investigations (myelography, spinal phlebography).
