[Educational organization in social gerontology at the Kassel General University, the University of the District of Hessen].

The study of social gerontology today has its practical relevance in its connection with social work/social pedagogics. The precondition to taking up this study is professional experience gained by working as a social worker/social educationalist for the elderly/helping the elderly. The dialogue between practice and experts from universities and the sciences forms the basis of the curriculum. The course lasting for 4 or 6 semesters covers: bases of social gerontology, study of a profession-related main topic, carrying out of a "professional" practice to become better informed, supervision and taking part in research projects which are relevant for practice. The aim is to make the social worker/social educator capable of acting and thinking in an interdisciplinary, social-gerontological manner.

[Possibilities and limitations of treatment and care; psychotherapy, psychosomatic medicine and social therapy].

A short discourse describing the better known treatment modalities in the area of psychotherapy and psychosocial therapy is followed by an explanation of different areas of use (methods of implimentation, types of treatment-groups, and institutional as well as other relevant influences). This is presented with special regard to the situation in the Federal Republic of Germany (W. Germany). Worthy of special emphasis is the discrepancy between the existing needs for such treatment possibilities and the degree to which the need is fulfilled. This discrepancy is largely due to the prejudices and the lack of knowledge of such psychological supports among the elderly population and their families, as well as the remaining population; this is also the result of the discriminatory attitude of psychotherapists toward the elderly population.

[Therapy through social workers? The tasks of social therapy in the aged].

In therapeutic treatment of emotionally ill old persons it is imperative to consider the effect that social environment, diseases, disabilities and increasing dependency have on the individual. It is the purpose of this paper to present a psychoanalytically orientated concept, that integrates both the exploration and analysis of intrapsychic conflicts and supporting interventions by way of social therapy. This is shown for individual as well as for group settings. There is also a discussion of the possibilities to have this treatment carried out by specially trained social workers.
