[Continuing education for social workers in the field of gerontology (author's transl)].

This article reports on a first attempt to integrate advanced training programs for social workers in the field of psycho-social gerontology into university curricula. The report concentrates on experience and problems to transmit and translate gerontological research results for the use of practitioners. Especially effective proved the integration of social workers as "experts-in-practice" into open-curricular-learning and their participation in application oriented research.

[Psychotherapeutic goals for elderly patients].

The psychotherapy of elderly people in the past seems to have paid less attention to the treatment of (neurotic, psychoreactive) illness and instead concentrated on coping with getting older, the final stage of life and/or the search for sense in life. The aims published concentrate more on the contemplative or deficient view which psychotherapists themselves have of the process of getting older, on their own distance to old age and on their insufficient treatment experience. The result of this is reductionist planning leading to decisive therapy modifications.

[Group specific improvements in activities of daily living in elderly stroke patients in the rehabilitation phase. A report from the study, "Rehabilitation in geriatrics--analysis and evaluation of rehabilitation procedures in over-60 stroke patients with reference to its epidemiologic aspects")].

Significant as well as non-significant but still distinct improvements in the average functional status of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), according to the Barthel Index and Rüstigkeitsskala as shown by the total patient group of two rehabilitation clinics are presented. The initial status and the time elapsed between stroke and rehabilitation are of great importance for the changes which can be attained. Patient groups which differ in factors such as age, sex, and family status also show clear differences in the average improvement of their functional status.

[Educational organization in social gerontology at the Kassel General University, the University of the District of Hessen].

The study of social gerontology today has its practical relevance in its connection with social work/social pedagogics. The precondition to taking up this study is professional experience gained by working as a social worker/social educationalist for the elderly/helping the elderly. The dialogue between practice and experts from universities and the sciences forms the basis of the curriculum. The course lasting for 4 or 6 semesters covers: bases of social gerontology, study of a profession-related main topic, carrying out of a "professional" practice to become better informed, supervision and taking part in research projects which are relevant for practice. The aim is to make the social worker/social educator capable of acting and thinking in an interdisciplinary, social-gerontological manner.
