[Bacteriological control of surgical hand disinfection by means of selected agents].

Three techniques of surgical hand disinfection (use of Fesia-cito, utilization of a Wofasteril-alcohol-water mixture and a modified Fürbringer-Ahlfeld method) were verified with regard to the reduction in the bacterial count of the non-infected day-hand. The Wofasteril-alcohol-water mixture caused a 99.8% reduction in the bacterial count on the right hand, and a 99.9% reduction on the left hand. The data obtained with Fesia-cito were 80.2% and 66.6% respectively. With the modified Fürbringer-Ahlfeld method the reduction in the bacterial count was 96.9% and 98.6% respectively. The authors emphasize the claim for the principle of non-infection in the field of maxillofacial surgery and recommended to exercise reserve in regard to the routine use of Fesia-cito for surgical hand disinfection.

[Resistance to chemotherapy of aerobic bacteria from nonspecific odontogenic infections].

Germs in patients suffering from nonspecific odontogenous infections described in a previous paper were analysed with regard to their resistance to chemotherapy (1964 to 1971). At the same time it was discovered that in the bacteria groups: staphyloccocus aureus, streptococci and pneumococci and enterobacteriaceae plus pseudomonas (344 strains) their sensitivity to penicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, oxytetracyclin, erythromycin, polymyxin B and nifurantin varied in several and significant ways. Significant changes were established in the resistance of staphylococcus aureus to all the potentially effective antibiotics, while from 1969 to 1971 the strains with the least resistance appeared. In the 1970 to 1971 period strepto- and pneumococci showed insensitivity to penicillin and streptomycin more frequently than before. From 1969 to 1971 entero-bacteriaceae and pseudomonas also showed evidence of increasing loss of sensitivity to chloramphenicol and oxytetracyclin, whereas the frequency of strains resistant to polymyxin B and nifurantine diminished. The findings are being discussed.

[Incidence of staphylococcal serotypes in different hospitals (author's transl)].

A total of 409 Staphylococcus aureus strains were classified with 17 typing sera into 16 groups and 14 types. Strains with the formula a b+ c e and h+ i k l were most frequently met with. The majority of strains isolated from typical staphylococcal diseases contained antigens e', h+ and/or h++ whereas those associated with atypical infections showed antigens b++ and o most frequently. Classification by Oeding and Williams' scheme yielded a less wide variety of serological units: most strains fell into group 4; spontaneously agglutinating and group 1, 2 and 3 strains were next in order.

[Serological studies on Staph. aureus strains from various processes of a disease of human origin (author's transl)].

This paper deals with serological studies on 332 Staph. aureus strains of human origin having been isolated from various sources. On the basis of typing with 17 factor sera, a great number of groups and types was obtained occurring among the strains of several processes of a disease without showing special serological structural formulae which would have been typical for pathological changes of certain localisation. But still deviations have been observed between the strains of most of the series of observation which proved to be significant differences of incidence and referred to several groups and types. In this isolated observation of the single factors, different antigen-structures occurred as result.

Ultrastructure and reproduction behaviour of single CHO-K1 cells exposed to near infrared femtosecond laser pulses.

In the present work, the authors investigated ultrastructural changes as well as the reproduction behaviour of preselected single CHO-K1 cells exposed to 170 femtosecond laser pulses at different power output levels in comparison with cells outside the illumination volume. The ultrashort laser pulses were provided by an 80 MHz Ti:sapphire laser at 780 nm. The cells were scanned ten times with a scan rate of 1/16 s(-1). Single CHO-K1 cells exposed to low mean power of 2 mW revealed no significant changes in ultrastructure after laser exposure. In some cases, changes of mitochondria with slight disordering of cristae were found. Cytoplasm was filled with vesicles that seemed to be released from Golgi stacks. Cells irradiated with higher powers demonstrated more dramatic changes in ultrastructure. A considerable number of swollen mitochondria in conjunction with loss of cristae was observed. The main event of mitochondrial changes was the formation of electron dense bodies in the mitochondrial matrix. In addition, lumen of endoplasmatic reticulum was enlarged. Highest applied mean laser power of 12.5 mW lead to complete destruction of mitochondria and their transformation to electron dense structures containing membrane material. Compared with cell targets irradiated with 2 mW mean power, the release of vesicles from Golgi stacks seemed to be rather moderate. Cells localised outside the laser beam revealed no ultrastructural changes. Low mean laser power at 2 mW was unable to impair the reproduction behaviour of CHO-K1 cells. At higher laser power output levels, CHO-K1 cells started to delay cell division. At 12.5 mW, no cell division occurred. The obtained results may be helpful in recommending parameters for safe femtosecond laser microscopy of living specimens.
