Myocardial disorders caused by magnesium deficiency in diabetic KK mice.

Studies were made on the diabetic state and the pathogenesis of myocardial disorders in KK mice with the following results: (1) KK mice showed glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia and hyperlipidemia; (2) their electrocardiograms (ECGs) showed a marked left-axis deviation of the QRS vector; (3) they showed epicardial calcification and myocardial disorders; (4) the Ca content of their myocardiums was much higher, and the Mg contents in the erythrocytes and myocardiums were much lower than those of control mice; (5) the addition of Mg to the drinking water of KK mice normalized these changes, and suppressed their myocardial disorders, but did not normalize their ECG changes. These results suggested that Mg deficiency plays an important role in the development of myocardial disorders in KK mice.

Effects of hot environments and carbonated drinking water on bone characteristics of eight-week-old broiler chicks.

Epiphyses of the femura from 8-week-old broiler chicks were examined for morphology using scanning electron microscopy and for elemental composition using energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis. Birds between the ages of 4 and 8 weeks were subjected to either 25 or 35 C environments and given tap or carbonated drinking water. The morphological appearance of the epiphyses was affected by the kind of drinking water but not the thermal environment. Elemental constituents, however, were affected by both environmental temperature and drinking water.

What interaction does indoor nitrogen dioxide have on the effect of the automobile exhaust.

An attempt was made to investigate the effects of automobile exhaust to the people living alongside major traffic arterial in Tokyo. Several hundreds of housewives aged from 40 to 59 who lived more than 3 years were sampled both from the area A; within 20 m from road side, and from the area B which extended from 20 m to 150 m along the road next to the area A. ATS-DLD questionnaire was used to check the prevalence of respiratory symptom, its results was analysed with a deliberate consideration on smoking habits and using status of unvented kerosene space heater. Among each symptom prevalence, difference between the area A and the B was observed significantly in symptom rate related persistent cough and phlegm. These differences became much distinguished in non-smoking group and people not using unvented heater. For about one tenth of sample subject, joined the study of measurement of personal exposure to NO2 for 24 hr using NO2 filter badge. The average concentration of exposure depends largely on heater using status but does not on the study area, even though the atmospheric concentration of NO2 in the area A was higher than that of the area B. The difference of symptom prevalence between the study area becomes not significant compared with the group of using unvented heater. This means that, we suppose, the substantial higher symptom prevalence which observed in the area along the roadside is masked by repeated exposure to elevated indoor concentration of NO2 resulted from using kerosene space heater.

Amino acid composition of salivary protein secreted by the parotid glands of rats in response to parasympathomimetic and sympathomimetic drugs.

Although the total protein concentration in the saliva varied markedly, depending on the nature of the stimulus, the proportions of the amino-acid residues were independent on the nature of the stimuli, where they were cholinergic, adrenergic or dopaminergic. However, the difference in protein composition of saliva previously shown in chronically isoprenaline-treated rats electrophoretically could be determined by amino-acid analysis.

Duodenal somatostatinoma. Immunohistopathology and review of literature.

A case of duodenal somatostatinoma is reported. The patient, a 54-year-old male, had complained of an epigastric pain due to gastric ulcer and a duodenal polyp was unexpectedly found at a gastrectomy. The polyp showed basically tubular adenocarcinoma, with negative argyrophil and argentaffin reactions. By an indirect immunofluorescent examination almost all of the tumor cells were revealed as somatostatin-immunoreactive. Big somatostatin was also positive. Radioimmunoassay of the tumor indicated 6400 pg of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity per milligram of wet tissue. This seems to be the second case of duodenal somatostatinoma, following the case reported by us previously.

Occurrence of alkyl ether phospholipids in rabbit platelets: compositions and fatty chain profiles.

Rabbit platelets contained significant amounts of alkylacyl compounds (10.4%) in choline phosphoglycerides (CPG) and alkenylacyl compounds (46.3%) in ethanolamine phosphoglycerides (EPG). The fatty chain profiles of alkylacyl and diacyl CPG, and alkenylacyl and diacyl EPG were considerably different from each other. Alkylacyl CPG contained higher amounts of 16:0 (35.0%) and 20:4 (20.9%) than diacyl compounds (4.5% and 12.6%, respectively). On the other hand, alkenylacyl EPG included a large amount of 20:4 (58.2%) in comparison with diacyl analogues (28.8%).

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy and distal myopathy. Intrafamilial difference in the onset and distribution of muscular involvement.

A family is reported which included a patient with a variant form of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. The patient's son suffered from infantile muscular dystrophy with a distal distribution in the lower extremities and no oculopharyngeal symptoms. Case 1, the father, showed blepharoptosis, but no limitation of ocular movements. Case 2, the son, showed early onset of weakness and more rapid progression of muscle involvement than the father. In both patients EMG, muscle biopsies and elevated serum CPK indicated the myopathic nature of the disorder. A muscle biopsy specimen in Case 2 showed abundant rimmed vacuoles and abnormal filaments 13-19 nm in diameter in the sarcoplasm, usually reported to occur in inclusion body myositis. The findings indicate that oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy and distal myopathy are related in their etiology and distal myopathy and inclusion body myositis are regarded as variant forms of the same disease.
