The transitional zone in the epithelium lining the mouse epiglottis.

The epithelium lining the caudal surface of the mouse epiglottis occupies the transitional zone between the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, continuing from the oral cavity, and the ciliated columnar epithelium, extending into the laryngeal cavity. The epithelium showed gradations ranging from stratified squamous through stratified cuboidal to ciliated stratified low-columnar type. It is suggested that the epithelium is identical with the 'intermediate epithelium' in the mouse nasopharynx.

Percutaneous ethanol injection in the treatment of liver neoplasms.

The effectiveness of percutaneous ethanol injection therapy was investigated in 30 patients who had hepatocellular carcinoma (18 had a single lesion and 12 had multiple lesions). In patients who had a single lesion, ethanol injection was especially effective. Histopathologic examination, performed in nine cases in this group, showed that the tumor was completely necrotic in six cases, 90% necrotic in two cases, and 70% necrotic in the remaining case. In eight other cases with a single tumor, follow-up angiography showed complete disappearance of the tumor stain. In the other case, CT showed the nonenhanced low-density area. In the 12 patients with multiple lesions, ethanol injection was performed as part of an integrated treatment plan. Eleven were still alive at the end of the study (the mean follow-up period was 5.8 months). We conclude that ethanol injection may be a valuable treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma.

[An autopsy case of AFP-producing gastric carcinoma resembling hepatocellular carcinoma on light microscopy].

We experienced an autopsy case of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)-producing advanced gastric carcinoma with liver metastasis. Microscopically, the tumor was compose by medullary nests of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma cells. The cells had an exclusively hepatoid pattern characterized by discrete masses, nests, and broad bands, consisting of large eosinophilic epithelial cells and separated by fibrous stroma. Immunohistochemical studies of hepatoid cells yielded a positive reaction for AFP, but negative for CEA. Electron microscopically, tumor cells possess a ductal lumina with abundant microvilli having a central core filaments, and secretory granules in cytoplasma. These findings suggest that the tumor cells differentiated into intestinal direction, irrespective of the appearance of their hepatoid features characterized by light microscopy.

[Experiences with FT+BrdU+radiation therapy of esophageal cancer].

Three patients with esophageal cancer, who were treated by FT+BrdU+radiation with good results, are reported. This method is theoretically almost the same as BAR therapy which was originally developed for the treatment of brain cancer using BrdU aimed at enhancing the sensitivity to irradiation. In two patients who had advanced lung cancer on the vertical axis, a good effect was achieved with only 8 Gy and 24 Gy of irradiation. In the other cases, who had circumferentially invasive superficial cancers, we also achieved on effect as good a CR clinically.

New observations on the fine structure of the normal nasopharyngeal epithelium of the mouse.

The ciliated columnar epithelium in the mouse nasopharynx was studied by use of light and electron microscopes. The ciliated cells were divided into 3 types because of the variability in electron density of the ground cytoplasm. The dark ciliated cells were characterized by well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and rod-shaped mitochondria with regular arrangements of pronounced cristae. In the light ciliated cells endoplasmic reticulum was poorly developed and mitochondria were vacuolated with irregular arrangements of cristae. Furthermore, there existed the "medium ciliated cells," termed by the authors, of which the cytoplasm was medium in electron density between the dark and the light ciliated cells, and some mitochondria were rod-shaped and others were vacuolated. The medium ciliated cells are regarded to be at a stage of transformation from the dark ciliated cells to the light ones. These findings suggest that the dark ciliated cells swell to decrease their electron density with declining activity, and finally transform into the light ciliated cells. The cells, termed the "potential ciliated cells" by the authors, were scattered between the ciliated cells, reached the lumen and had no cilia. They contained many procentrioles suggesting ciliogenesis and had a cytoplasm of the same electron density as that of the dark ciliated cells. It is considered that the dark ciliated cells originate from the potential ciliated cells.

Anatomical observations in the pharynx of the mouse with special reference to the nasopharyngeal hiatus (Wood Jones).

The mouse pharynx, especially the muscles, was anatomically studied in detail considering the structures of the laryngeal cartilages and the hyoid bone. The nasopharyngeal sphincter was formed by the palatopharyngeus and the levator palati muscles. It was suggested that the former contracted the 'palatopharyngeal eminence' (named by the present authors) and the latter drew up the soft palate, then the nasopharyngeal hiatus was closed. At the rostral end of the esophagus, there existed the 'thyro-pharyngo-esophageus muscle', denominated by the present authors. It was suggested to represent in the area of the esophagopharynx and to compress the tube by any sphincteric functions.

Three-dimensional and surface structures of rat filiform papillae.

The three-dimensional and surface structures of the simple conical papillae of the rat tongue have been demonstrated with scanning electron microscopy. The papillary projection was organized into the anterior, posterior and central core cell populations, whereas the basal region of the papilla which consisted of circularly arranged cells showed no differentiation into three autonomic cell populations. It is considered that the anterior and posterior cell populations around the central core tend to be mutually attached at the bilateral sides, and that the posterior and core cell contacts are rather close than the anterior one. The anterior papillary cells showed relatively smooth surface with little micropits and without microridges. The reticular microridges on the basal cell surface of the posterior papillary cells appear to later develop the micropits and linear microridges on the tip cell surface. These suggest that the anterior cell surface is more highly keratinized than the posterior one. The microridges or micropits on the outer cell surface and the microprojections on the inner cell surface organizing filiform papilla are considered to be the structures for the purpose of cell adhesion.

Taste bud papillae on the retromolar mucosa of the rat, mouse and golden hamster.

The retromolar mucosa of the rat, mouse and golden hamster was observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Numerous taste bud papillae, each of which formed a low round eminence containing one to several taste buds, were present in the posterior region of the retromolar mucosa, and were especially concentrated in the vicinity of the orifices of the molar glands. This topographical coincidence suggests that the retromolar mucosa of these animals has a functional role as a taste organ. Microridges, arranged in various patterns and small pits, were observed on the surface of the keratinized epithelium of the rat and mouse retromolar mucosa. It appears that the development of numerous microridges is adapted for varied stimuli in the oral cavity.

[Autopsy case of pancreatic carcinoma associated with B-cell derived lymphoma].

An autopsy case a 75-year-old man, with papillary adenocarcinoma of the pancreas associated with wide-spread metastasis from a malignant lymphoma is reported. We discuss the markedly lower incidence of pancreatic cancer in syncronal association with lymphoma. We applied an immunoperoxidase method (PAP) in the diffuse large-cell lymphoma to determine the immunological phenotype and found mu heavy chains and lambda light chains in the lymphoma cells. This suggests that the tumor cells were derived from B-lymphocytes.
